Ibn Abbas said, Abu Sufyan ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated to me the Hadith about the Prophet ہللا عليه و آله وسلم),(صلى (the conversation that took place between him and Heraclius) and quoted from it: He (the Prophet (ﷺ ordered us to offer Salah and pay Zakat, to keep good relations with kith and kin, and to be chaste. 6 رضئ ہللا ( Mu`adh sent (صلى ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) narrated that the Prophet (رضئ ہللا تعالی عنہ) Ibn Abbas to Yemen and said, invite the people to testify that there is no god but Allah and I am (تعالی عنہ Allah's Apostle ہللا عليه و آله وسلم),(صلى and if they obey you to do so, teach them that Allah has enjoined on them five prayers in every day and night (in twenty-four hours), and if they obey you to do so, then teach them that Allah has made it obligatory for them to pay the Zakat from their property and it is to be taken from the wealthy among them and given to the poor. Abu Ayyub ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that a man said to the Prophet ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى tell me of such a deed as will make me enter Paradise. The people said, what is the matter with him? What is the matter with him? The Prophet ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, he has something to ask. The Prophet ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said: (In order to enter Paradise) you should worship Allah and do not ascribe any partners to Him, offer prayer perfectly, pay the Zakat and keep good relations with your Kith and kin. (صلى ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) narrated that a Bedouin came to the Prophet (رضئ ہللا تعالی عنہ) Abu Huraira صلى ہللا ( Prophet and said, tell me of such a deed that will make me enter Paradise, if I do it. The said, worship Allah, and worship none along with Him, offer the (five) prescribed (عليه و آله وسلم compulsory prayers perfectly, pay the compulsory Zakat, and fast in the month of Ramadan. The Bedouin said, by Him, in Whose Hands my life is, I will not do more than this. When he (the Bedouin) left, the Prophet ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, whoever likes to see a man of Paradise, then he may look at this man. Abu Zur a ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ also narrated the same.(صلى ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) from the Prophet Sahih al-bukhari Vol 2, Bk 24, Hadith # 004 2

7 ح د ث ن ا ح ج اج ح د ث ن ا ح م اد ب ن ز ي د ح د ث ن ا أ ب و ج م ر ة ق ال س م ع ت اب ن ع ب اس رضى ہللا عنهما ي ق ول ق د م و ف د ع ب د ال ق ي س ع ل ى الن ب ي صلى ہللا عليه وسلم ف ق ال وا ي ا ر س و ل للا إ ن ه ذ ا ال ح ى م ن ر ب يع ة ق د ح ال ت ب ي ن ن ا و ب ي ن ك ك ف ار م ض ر و ل س ن ا ن خ ل ص إ ل ي ك إ ال ف ي الش ه ر ال ح ر ام ف م ر ن ا ب ش ى ء ن أ خ ذ ه ع ن ك و ن د ع و إ ل ي ه م ن و ر اء ن ا. ق ال " آم ر ك م ب أ ر ب ع و أ ن ه اك م ع ن أ ر ب ع اإل يم ان ب ا لل و ش ه اد ة أ ن ال إ ل ه إ ال للا و ع ق د ب ي د ه ه ك ذ ا و إ ق ام الص ال ة و إ يت اء الز ك اة و أ ن ت ؤ د وا خ م س م ا غ ن م ت م و أ ن ه اك م ع ن الد ب اء و ال ح نت م و الن ق ي ر." و ال م ز ف ت ". و ق ال س ل ي م ان و أ ب و الن ع م ان ع ن ح م اد " اإل يم ان ب ا لل ش ه اد ة أ ن ال إ ل ه إ ال للا Ibn Abbas ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that a delegation of the tribe of Abdul Qais came to the Prophet ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى and said, O Allah's Apostle ہللا عليه و آله وسلم),(صلى we are from the tribe of Rabi`a, and the infidels of the tribe of Mudar stands between us and you; so we cannot come to you except during the Sacred Months. Please order us to do something which we may صلى ہللا عليه و آله ( Prophet carry out and invite our people to it whom we have left behind. The said, I order you to do four things and forbid you four others. Have faith in Allah and (وسلم testify that there is no god but Allah, (and the Prophet ﷺ gestured with his hand like this (one knot), and to offer prayers perfectly and to pay the Zakat, and to pay one fifth of the booty in Allah's cause. And I forbid you to use Dubba', Hantam, Naqir and Muzaffat (all these were the utensils used for preparing alcoholic drinks). Sahih al-bukhari Vol 2, Bk 24, Hadith # 005 ح د ث ن ا أ ب و ال ي م ان ال ح ك م ب ن ن اف ع أ خ ب ر ن ا ش ع ي ب ب ن أ ب ي ح م ز ة ع ن الز ه ر ي ح د ث ن ا ع ب ي د للا ب ن ع ب د للا ب ن ع ت ب ة ب ن م س ع ود أ ن أ ب ا ه ر ي ر ة رضى ہللا عنه ق ال ل م ا ت و ف ي ر س ول للا صلى ہللا عليه وسلم و ك ان أ ب و ب ك ر رضى ہللا عنه و ك ف ر م ن ك ف ر م ن ا لع ر ب ف ق ال ع م ر رضى ہللا عنه ك ي ف ت ق ات ل الن اس و ق د ق ال ر س ول للا صلى ہللا عليه وسلم " أ م ر ت أ ن أ ق ات ل الن اس ح ت ى ي ق ول وا ال إ ل ه إ ال للا. ف م ن ق ال ه ا ف ق د ع ص م م ن ي م ال ه و ن ف س ه إ ال ب ح ق ه و ح س اب ه ع ل ى للا ". ف ق ال و للا أل ق ات ل ن م ن ف ر ق ب ي ن الص ال ة و الز ك اة ف إ ن الز ك اة ح ق ال م ال و للا ل و م ن ع ون ي ع ن اق ا ك ان وا ي ؤ د ون ه ا إ ل ى ر س ول للا صلى ہللا عليه وسلم ل ق ات ل ت ه م ع ل ى م ن ع ه ا. ق ال ع م ر رضى.ہللا عنه ف و للا م ا ه و إ ال أ ن ق د ش ر ح للا ص د ر أ ب ي ب ك ر رضى ہللا عنه ف ع ر ف ت أ ن ه ال ح ق (صلى ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) narrated that when the Apostle of Allah (رضئ ہللا تعالی عنہ) Abu Huraira died, and Abu Bakr ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ became the caliph some Arabs renegades (reverted to disbelief and Abu Bakr decided to declare war against them). Umar ہللا تعالی عنہ),(رضئ said to صلى ( Apostle how can you fight with these people although Allah's,(رضئ ہللا تعالی عنہ) Abu Bakr said, 'I have been ordered (by Allah) to fight the people till they say, there is no (ہللا عليه و آله وسلم god but Allah, and whoever said it, then he will save his life and property from me except on trespassing the law, and his account will be with Allah.' Abu Bakr ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ said, by Allah! I will fight those who differentiate between the Salah and the Zakat, as Zakat is the compulsory to be taken from the property. By Allah! If they refuse to pay me even a small lamb which they used to pay at the time of Allah's Apostle ہللا عليه و آله وسلم),(صلى I would fight with them for withholding it. Then Umar ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ said, by Allah, it was nothing, but Allah opened Abu Bakr's ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ chest towards the decision (to fight) and I came to know that his decision was right. 3

8 CHAPTER (2) باب ال ب ي ع ة ع ل ى إ يت اء الز ك اة To give bay a to pay Zakat {ف إ ن ت اب وا و أ ق ام وا الص ال ة و آت و ا الز ك اة ف إ خ و ان ك م ف ي الد ي ن { The statement of Allah ( و ج ل (ع ز [But if they repent and are firm in devotion and pay the Zakat, then they are your brothers in faith. ] (At-Tauba 11) Sahih al-bukhari Vol 2, Bk 24, Hadith # 006 ح د ث ن ا اب ن ن م ي ر ق ال ح د ث ن ي أ ب ي ح د ث ن ا إ س م اع يل ع ن ق ي س ق ال ق ال ج ر ير ب ن ع ب د للا ب اي ع ت الن ب ي صلى ہللا عليه وسلم ع ل ى إ ق ا م الص ال ة و إ يت اء الز ك اة و الن ص ح ل ك ل م سل م. Jarir bin Abdullah ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that he gave the pledge of allegiance to the Prophet for establishing Salah, paying Zakat and giving good advice to every (صلى ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) Muslim. CHAPTER (3) باب إ ث م م ان ع الز ك اة The sin of a person who does not pay Zakat و ق و ل للا ت ع ال ى: }و ال ذ ين ي ك ن ز ون الذ ه ب و ال ف ض ة و ال ي ن ف ق ون ه ا ف ي س ب يل للا ف ب ش ر ه م ب ع ذ اب أ ل يم ي و م ي ح م ى ع ل ي ه ا ف ي ن ار ج ه ن م ف ت ك و ى ب ه ا ج ب اه ه م.{و ج ن وب ه م و ظ ه ور ه م ه ذ ا م ا ك ن ز ت م أل ن ف س ك م ف ذ وق وا م ا ك ن ت م ت ك ن ز ون And the statement of Allah ( و ج ل (ع ز - [ O People who Believe! Indeed, many of the (Jewish) rabbis and the (Christian) monks unjustly devour people's wealth and prevent (people) from Allah s way; and those who hoard up gold and silver and do not spend it in Allah s way, give them tidings of a painful punishment. On that day, it (the hoarded wealth) will be heated in the fire of Hell and their 4

9 foreheads and their sides and their backs will be branded with it. (They will be told), 'This is the treasure which you hoarded for yourselves; taste now what you were busy hoarding. ] (At-Tauba 34-35) Sahih al-bukhari Vol 2, Bk 24, Hadith # 007 ح د ث ن ا ال ح ك م ب ن ن اف ع أ خ ب ر ن ا ش ع ي ب ح د ث ن ا أ ب و الز ن اد أ ن ع ب د الر ح م ن ب ن ه ر م ز األ ع ر ج ح د ث ه أ ن ه س م ع أ ب ا ه ر ي ر ة رضى ہللا عنه ي ق ول ق ال الن ب ي صلى ہللا عليه وسلم " ت أ ت ي اإل ب ل ع ل ى ص اح ب ه ا ع ل ى خ ي ر م ا ك ان ت إ ذ ا ه و ل م ي ع ط ف يه ا ح ق ه ا ت ط ؤ ه ب أ خ ف اف ه ا و ت أ ت ي ال غ ن م ع ل ى ص اح ب ه ا ع ل ى خ ي ر م ا ك ان ت إ ذ ا ل م ي ع ط ف يه ا ح ق ه ا ت ط ؤ ه ب أ ظ ال ف ه ا و ت ن ط ح ه ب ق ر ون ه ا ". و ق ال " و م ن ح ق ه ا أ ن ت ح ل ب ع ل ى ال م اء ". ق ال " و ال ي أ ت ي أ ح د ك م ي و م ال ق ي ام ة ب ش اة ي ح م ل ه ا ع ل ى ر ق ب ت ه ل ه ا ي ع ار ف ي ق ول ي ا م ح م د. ف أ ق ول ال أ م ل ك ل ك ش ي ئ ا ق د ب ل غ ت. و ال ي أ ت ي ب ب ع ير ي ح م ل ه ع ل ى ر ق ب ت ه ل ه ر غ اء ف ي ق ول ي ا م ح م د. ف أ ق ول ال أ م ل ك ل ك ش ي ئ ا ق د ب ل غ ت ". Abu Huraira ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that the Prophet ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, (On the Day of Resurrection) camels will come to their owner in the best state of health they have ever had (in the world), and if he had not paid their Zakat (in the world) then they would tread him with their feet; and similarly, sheep will come to their owner in the best state of health they have ever had in the world, and if he had not paid their Zakat, then they would tread him with their hooves and would butt him with their horns. The Prophet ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى added, one of their rights is صلى ہللا عليه و آله ( Prophet that they should be milked while water is kept in front of them. The added, I do not want anyone of you to come to me on the Day of Resurrection, carrying (وسلم صلى ہللا عليه ( Prophet over his neck a sheep that will be bleating. Such a person will (then) say, 'O (kindly intercede for me,) I will say to him. 'I can't help you, for I conveyed Allah's (و آله وسلم Message to you.' Similarly, I do not want anyone of you to come to me carrying over his neck a (صلى ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) camel that will be grunting. Such a person (then) will say 'O Prophet (please intercede for me). I will say to him, I can't help you for I conveyed Allah's message to you. Sahih al-bukhari Vol 2, Bk 24, Hadith # 008 ح د ث ن ا ع ل ي ب ن ع ب د للا ح د ث ن ا ه اش م ب ن ال ق اس م ح د ث ن ا ع ب د الر ح م ن ب ن ع ب د للا ب ن د ين ار ع ن أ ب يه ع ن أ ب ي ص ال ح ال سم ان ع ن أ ب ي ه ر ي ر ة رضى ہللا عنه ق ال ق ال ر س ول للا صلى ہللا عليه وسلم " م ن آت اه للا م اال ف ل م ي ؤ د ز ك ات ه م ث ل ل ه ي و م ال ق ي ام ة ش ج اع ا أ ق ر ع ل ه ز ب يب ت ان ي ط و ق ه ي و م ال ق ي ام ة ث م ي أ خ ذ ب ل ه ز م ت ي ه ي ع ن ي ش د ق ي ه ث م ي ق ول أ ن ا م ال ك أ ن ا ك ن ز ك " ث م ت ال }ال ي ح س ب ن ال ذ ين ي ب خ ل ون } اآلي ة. Abu Huraira ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that the Apostle of Allah ( ہللا عليه و آله وسلم (صلى said, whoever is made wealthy by Allah and does not pay Zakat of his wealth, then on the Day of Resurrection his wealth will be made like a baldheaded poisonous male snake with two black spots over the eyes. The snake will encircle his neck and bite his cheeks and say, 'I am your و ال ي ح س ب ن ال ذ ين ي ب خ ل ون - recited (صلى ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) wealth, I am your treasure.' Then the Prophet ب م ا آت اه م للا م ن ف ض ل ه ه و خ ي ر ا ل ه م ب ل ه و ش ر ل ه م س ي ط و ق ون م ا ب خ ل وا ب ه ي و م ال ق ي ام ة و لل م ير اث الس م او ات و األ ر ض و للا [ And never should those who act miserly upon what Allah has bestowed them ب م ا ت ع م ل ون خ ب ير from His grace, think that it is good for them; in fact it is harmful for them; soon what they had withheld will become collars of fire round their necks on the Day of Judgement. To Allah 5

10 belong (all that is in) the heavens and the earth; and Allah is Well Aware of what you do.] (Aali-Imran - 180). CHAPTER (4) باب م ا أ د ي ز ك ات ه ف ل ي س ب ك ن ز A property from which the Zakat is paid is not Al-Kanz (hoardedmoney) ل ق و ل الن ب ي ص ل ى للا ع ل ي ه و س ل م : ل ي س ف يم ا د ون خ م س ة أ و اق ص د ق ة The statement of the Prophet ہللا عليه و آله وسلم),(صلى there is no Zakat on wealth amounting to less than five Uqiya (of silver) (one Uqiya equals 128 grams) Sahih al-bukhari Vol 2, Bk 24, Hadith # 009 و ق ال أ ح م د ب ن ش ب يب ب ن س ع يد ح د ث ن ا أ ب ي ع ن ي ون س ع ن اب ن ش ه اب ع ن خ ال د ب ن أ س ل م ق ال خ ر ج ن ا م ع ع ب د للا ب ن ع مر رضى ہللا عنهما ف ق ال أ ع ر اب ي أ خ ب ر ن ي ق و ل للا }و ال ذ ين ي ك ن ز ون الذ ه ب و ال ف ض ة و ال ي ن ف ق ون ه ا ف ي س ب يل للا { ق ال اب ن ع م ر رضى ہللا عنهما م ن ك ن ز ه ا ف ل م ي ؤ د ز ك ات ه ا ف و ي ل ل ه إ ن م ا ك ان ه ذ ا ق ب ل أ ن ت ن ز ل الز ك اة ف ل م ا أ ن ز ل ت ج ع ل ه ا للا ط ه ر ا ل أل م و ا ل. Khalid bin Aslam narrated that they went out with Abdullah bin Umar ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ and a و ال ذ ين ي ك ن ز ون الذ ه ب و ال ف ض ة - saying tell me about Allah's,(رضئ ہللا تعالی عنہ) nomad asked Abdullah [And those who hoard up gold and silver and do not spend it in Allah s و ال ي ن ف ق ون ه ا ف ي س ب يل للا (رضئ ہللا تعالی عنہ) way, give them tidings of a painful punishment.] (At-Tauba - 34). Ibn 'Umar said, whoever hoarded them and did not pay Zakat, then woe to him. But these verses were revealed before the verses of Zakat. So, when the verses of Zakat were revealed, Allah made Zakat a purifier of the property. Abu Sa`id ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that the Apostle of Allah ( ہللا عليه و آله وسلم (صلى said, no Zakat is due on property amounting to less than five Uqiyas (of silver), and no Zakat is due on less than five camels, and there is no Zakat on less than five Wasqs. (A Wasqs equals 60 Sa's) & (1 Sa=3 Kilograms App.) 6

Zaid bin Wahab narrated that he passed by a place called Ar-Rabadha and by chance met Abu Dhar ( ہللا تعالی عنہ (رضئ and asked him, what has brought you to this place? He said, I was in و ال ذ ين ي ك ن ز ون - verse on the meaning of this (رضئ ہللا تعالی عنہ) Syria and differed with Muawiya [And those who hoard up gold and silver and do not spend it in الذ ه ب و ال ف ض ة و ال ي ن ف ق ون ه ا ف ي س ب يل للا رضئ ہللا ( Muawiya Allah s way, give them tidings of a painful punishment.] (At-Tauba - 34). said, 'this verse is revealed regarding the people of the scriptures. I said, It was (تعالی عنہ revealed regarding us and also the people of the scriptures. So, we had a quarrel and Mu'awiya رضئ ہللا ( Uthman.(رضئ ہللا تعالی عنہ) sent a complaint against me to Uthman (رضئ ہللا تعالی عنہ) wrote to me to come to Madina, and I came to Madina. Many people came to me as if (تعالی عنہ they had not seen me before. So, I told this to Uthman ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ who said to me, you may depart and live nearby if you wish. That was the reason for my being here for even if an Ethiopian had been nominated as my ruler, I would have obeyed him. Al-Ahnaf bin Qais ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that while he was sitting with some people from Quraish, a man with very rough hair, clothes, and appearance came and stood in front of us, greeted us and said, inform those who hoard wealth, that a stone will be heated in the Hell-fire and will be put on the nipples of their breasts till it comes out from the bones of their shoulders and then put on the bones of their shoulders till it comes through the nipples of their breasts the stone will be moving and hitting. After saying that, the person retreated and sat by the side of the pillar, I followed him and sat beside him, and I did not know who he was. I said to him, I think the people disliked what you had said. He said, these people do not understand anything, صلى ہللا عليه و آله ( Prophet although my friend told me. I asked, who is your friend? He said, the Do you see the mountain of Uhud?' And on that I!(رضئ ہللا تعالی عنہ) told (me), 'O Abu Dhar (وسلم (Abu Dhar) started looking towards the sun to judge how much remained of the day as I thought 7

12 that Allah's Apostle ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى wanted to send me to do something for him and I said, 'Yes!' He said, 'I do not love to have gold equal to the mountain of Uhud unless I spend it all (in Allah's cause) except three Dinars (pounds). These people do not understand and collect worldly wealth. No, by Allah, neither I ask them for worldly benefits nor am I in need of their religious.(ع ز و ج ل ( Allah advice till I meet CHAPTER (5) باب إ ن ف اق ال م ال ف ي ح ق ه To spend money in the right way Sahih al-bukhari Vol 2, Bk 24, Hadith # 013 ح د ث ن ا م ح م د ب ن ال م ث ن ى ح د ث ن ا ي ح ي ى ع ن إ س م اع يل ق ال ح د ث ن ي ق ي س ع ن اب ن م س ع ود رضى ہللا عنه ق ال س م ع ت الن ب ي صلى ہللا عليه وسلم ي ق ول " ال ح س د إ ال ف ي اث ن ت ي ن ر ج ل آت اه للا م اال ف س ل ط ه ع ل ى ه ل ك ت ه ف ي ال ح ق و ر ج ل آت اه للا ح ك م ة ف ه و ي ق ض ي ب ه ا و ي ع ل م ه ا ". Ibn Mas`ud ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that he heard the Prophet ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى saying, there is no envy except in two, (i) a person whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it in the right way, and (ii) a person whom Allah has given wisdom and he gives his decisions accordingly and teaches it to the others. CHAPTER (6) ب اب الر ي اء ف ي الص د ق ة Alms giving as showoff ل ق و ل ه : }ي ا أ ي ه ا ال ذ ين آم ن وا ال ت ب ط ل وا ص د ق ات ك م ب ال م ن و األ ذ ى{ إ ل ى ق و ل ه : }ال ك اف ر ين } و ق ال اب ن ع ب اس ر ض ي للا ع ن ه م ا: }ص ل د ا{ ل ي س ع ل ي ه ش ي ء و ق ال ع ك ر م ة : }و اب ل { م ط ر ش د يد و الط ل الن د ى ي ا أ ي ه ا ال ذ ين آم ن وا ال ت ب ط ل وا ص د ق ات ك م - Allah And the Statement of ب ال م ن و األ ذ ى ك ال ذ ي ي ن ف ق م ال ه ر ئ اء الن اس و ال ي ؤ م ن ب ا لل و ال ي و م اآل خ ر ف م ث ل ه ك م ث ل ص ف و ان ع ل ي ه ت ر اب ف أ ص اب ه و اب ل ف ت ر ك ه ص ل د ا ال ي ق د ر ون ع ل ى ش ي ء م م ا O People who Believe! Do not [ ك س ب وا و للا ال ي ه د ي ال ق و م ال ك اف ر ين invalidate your charity by flaunting favor and (by) hurting the feelings (of the recipients), like the one who spends his 8

13 wealth for people as a showoff (to others) and does not believe in Allah and the Last Day. His example is similar to a rock covered with soft (thin layer of) earth which gets washed away as the rain falls on it exposing the bare rock. They shall get nothing from their earning (charity). And Allah does not guide disbelievers.] (Al-Baqara 264) And Ibn Abbas ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ said, bare means like nothing upon it. And Ikrama said like Hail storm, excessive rain, flooding, excessive dew. There is no Hadith in this chapter. CHAPTER (7) ب اب ال ي ق ب ل للا ص د ق ة م ن غ ل ول و ال ي ق ب ل إ ال م ن ك س ب ط ي ب No charity is accepted from what is grasped from the War booty in an illegal way. ل ق و ل ه : }ق و ل م ع ر وف و م غ ف ر ة خ ي ر م ن ص د ق ة ي ت ب ع ه ا أ ذ ى و للا غ ن ي ح ل يم { ق و ل م ع ر وف و م غ ف ر ة خ ي ر م ن ص د ق ة - Allah And the Statement of of) [ Speaking kind words and (the act ي ت ب ع ه ا أ ذ ى و للا غ ن ي ح ل يم forgiveness are better than the charity that follows hurting (the sentiments of the recipients); and Allah is the Affluent, Most Forbearing.] (Al-Baqara 263) There is no Hadith in this chapter. CHAPTER (8) باب الص د ق ة م ن ك س ب ط ي ب Charity should be from the money earned legally 9

14 ل ق و ل ه : }و ي ر ب ي الص د ق ات و للا ال ي ح ب ك ل ك ف ار أ ث يم } إ ل ى ق و ل ه : }و ال خ و ف ع ل ي ه م و ال ه م ي ح ز ن ون { ي م ح ق للا الر ب ا و ي ر ب ي الص د ق ات و للا ال ي ح ب ك ل ك ف ار أ ث يم - إ ن - asserts As Allah's saying ال ذ ين آم ن وا و ع م ل وا الص ال ح ات و أ ق ام وا الص ال ة و آت و ا ال ز ك اة ل ه م أ ج ر ه م ع ن د ر ب ه م و ال خ و ف ع ل ي ه م و ال ه م [Allah destroys usury and increases charity; and Allah does not like the ي ح ز ن ون ungrateful and excessive sinners. Those who believe and do good deeds, and fulfill their devotional obligations and pay the Zakat, have their reward with their Lord. They will have no fear nor regret.] (Al-Baqara ) Sahih al-bukhari Vol 2, Bk 24, Hadith # 014 ح د ث ن ا ع ب د للا ب ن م ن ير س م ع أ ب ا الن ض ر ح د ث ن ا ع ب د الر ح م ن ه و اب ن ع ب د للا ب ن د ين ار ع ن أ ب يه ع ن أ ب ي ص ال ح ع ن أ ب ي ه ر ي ر ة رضى ہللا عنه ق ال ق ال ر س ول للا صلى ہللا عليه وسلم " م ن ت ص د ق ب ع د ل ت م ر ة م ن ك س ب ط ي ب و ال ي ق ب ل للا إ ال الط ي ب و إ ن للا ي ت ق ب ل ه ا ب ي م ين ه ث م ي ر ب يه ا ل ص اح ب ه ك م ا ي ر ب ي أ ح د ك م ف ل و ه ح ت ى ت ك ون م ث ل ال ج ب ل ". ت اب ع ه س ل ي م ان ع ن اب ن د ين ار. و ق ال و ر ق اء ع ن اب ن د ين ار ع ن س ع يد ب ن ي س ار ع ن أ ب ي ه ر ي ر ة رضى ہللا عنه ع ن الن ب ي صلى ہللا عليه وسلم. و ر و اه م س ل م ب ن أ ب ي م ر ي م و ز ي د ب ن أ س ل م و س ه ي ل ع ن أ ب ي ص ال ح ع ن أ ب ي ه ر ي ر ة رضى ہللا عنه ع ن الن ب ي صلى ہللا عليه وسلم. Abu Huraira ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that the Apostle of Allah ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, if one gives in charity what equals one date-fruit from honestly earned money, and Allah accepts only the honestly earned money, Allah takes it in His right (hand) and then enlarges its reward for that person, as anyone of you brings up his baby horse, so much so that it becomes as big as a mountain CHAPTER (9) باب الص د ق ة ق ب ل الر د To give charity before such time when nobody would accept it Sahih al-bukhari Vol 2, Bk 24, Hadith # 015 ح د ث ن ا آد م ح د ث ن ا ش ع ب ة ح د ث ن ا م ع ب د ب ن خ ال د ق ال س م ع ت ح ار ث ة ب ن و ه ب ق ال س م ع ت الن ب ي صلى ہللا عليه وسلم ي ق و ل " ت ص د ق وا ف إ ن ه ي أ ت ي ع ل ي ك م ز م ان ي م ش ي الر ج ل ب ص د ق ت ه ف ال ي ج د م ن ي ق ب ل ه ا ي ق ول الر ج ل ل و ج ئ ت ب ه ا ب األ م س ل ق ب ل ت ه ا ف أ م ا ال ي و م ف ال ح اج ة ل ي ب ه ا ". (صلى ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) narrated that he heard the Prophet (رضئ ہللا تعالی عنہ) Haritha bin Wahab saying, O people, give in charity as a time will come upon you when a person will wander about with his object of charity and will not find anybody to accept it, and one (who will be requested to take it) will say, if you had brought it yesterday, would have taken it, but today I am not in need of it. 10

Abu Huraira ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that the Prophet ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, the Hour (Day of Judgment) will not be established till your wealth increases so much so that one will be worried, for no one will accept his Zakat and the person to whom he will give it will reply, 'I am not in need of it.' Adi bin Hatim ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that while he was sitting with the Apostle of Allah two person came to him; one of them complained about his poverty and the (صلى ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) other complained about the prevalence of robberies. Allah's Apostle ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, as regards stealing and robberies, there will shortly come a time when a caravan will go to Makka (from Madina) without any guard. And regarding poverty, the Hour (Day of Judgment) will not be established till one of you wanders about with his object of charity and will not find anybody to accept it. And (no doubt) each one of you will stand in front of Allah and there will be neither a curtain nor an interpreter between him and Allah, and Allah will ask him, 'did not I give you wealth?' He will reply in the affirmative. Allah will further ask, 'didn't send an Apostle to you?' And again, that person will reply in the affirmative. Then he will (صلى ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) look to his right and he will see nothing but Hell-fire, and then he will look to his left and will see nothing but Hell-fire. And so, any (each one) of you should save himself from the fire even by giving half of a date-fruit (in charity). And if you do not find a half date fruit, then (you can do it through saying) a good pleasant word (to your people). Sahih al-bukhari Vol 2, Bk 24, Hadith # 018 ح د ث ن ا م ح م د ب ن ال ع ال ء ح د ث ن ا أ ب و أ س ام ة ع ن ب ر ي د ع ن أ ب ي ب ر د ة ع ن أ ب ي م وس ى رضى ہللا عنه ع ن الن ب ي صلى ہللا عليه وسلم ق ال " ل ي أ ت ي ن ع ل ى الن اس ز م ان ي ط وف الر ج ل ف يه ب الص د ق ة م ن الذ ه ب ث م ال ي ج د أ ح د ا ي أ خ ذ ه ا م ن ه و ي ر ى الر ج ل ال و اح د ي ت ب ع ه أ ر ب ع ون ام ر أ ة ي ل ذ ن ب ه م ن ق ل ة الر ج ال و ك ث ر ة الن س ا ء ". 11

16 Abu Musa ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that the Prophet ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, a time will come upon the people when a person will wander about with gold as Zakat and will not find anybody to accept it, and one man will be seen followed by forty women to be their guardian because of scarcity of men and great number of women. CHAPTER (10) باب ات ق وا الن ار و ل و ب ش ق ت م ر ة و ال ق ل يل م ن الص د ق ة Protect yourself from Hellfire even with half a date or a little object as charity }و م ث ل ال ذ ين ي ن ف ق ون أ م و ال ه م اب ت غ اء م ر ض اة للا و ت ث ب يت ا م ن أ ن ف س ه م { اآلي ة و إ ل ى ق و ل ه : }م ن ك ل الث م ر ات { و م ث ل ال ذ ين ي ن ف ق ون أ م و ال ه م اب ت غ اء م ر ض ات للا و ت ث ب يت ا م ن - Allah The Statement of أ ن ف س ه م ك م ث ل ج ن ة ب ر ب و ة أ ص اب ه ا و اب ل ف آت ت أ ك ل ه ا ض ع ف ي ن ف إ ن ل م ي ص ب ه ا و اب ل ف ط ل و للا ب م ا ت ع م ل ون ب ص ير - أ ي و د أ ح د ك م أ ن ت ك ون ل ه ج ن ة م ن ن خ يل و أ ع ن اب ت ج ر ي م ن ت ح ت ه ا األ ن ه ار ل ه [ And the example of those who spend their wealth in ف يه ا م ن ك ل الث م ر ات order to please Allah and to make their hearts steadfast, is similar to that of a garden on a height, hard rain fell on it, bringing forth its fruit twice (than expected). Even if the rain does not reach it, the dew is enough; and Allah sees all that you do. Abu Mas`ud ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that when the verses of charity were revealed, we used to work as porters. A man came and distributed objects of charity in abundance. And they (the people) said, he is showing off. And another man came and gave a Sa (a small measure of food grains); they said, Allah is not in need of this small amount of charity. And then the divine revelation came - ال ذ ين ي ل م ز ون ال م ط و ع ين م ن ال م ؤ م ن ين ف ي الص د ق ات و ال ذ ين ال ي ج د و ن [Those who criticize the contributors among the believers concerning (their) charities and (denigrate) the ones who find nothing (to spend) except their effort.] (At-Tauba - 79). 12

(Those were the days of poverty) and today some of us have one hundred thousand. Adi bin Hatim narrated that he heard the Prophet ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى saying, save yourself from Hellfire even by giving half a date-fruit in charity. Ummul Momineen Aisha ہللا تعالی عنہا) (رضئ narrated that a woman along with her two daughters came to me asking (for some alms), but she found nothing with me except one date which I gave to her and she divided it between her two daughters, and did not eat anything herself, and then she got up and went away. Then the Prophet ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى came in and I informed him about this story. He said, whoever is put to trial by these daughters and he treats them generously (with benevolence) then these daughters will act as a shield for him from Hellrire. Abu Huraira ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that a man came to the Prophet ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى and asked, O Allah's Apostle ہللا عليه و آله وسلم),(صلى which charity is the most superior in reward? He replied, the charity which you practice while you are healthy, niggardly and afraid of poverty and wish to become wealthy. Do not delay it to the time of approaching death and then say, 'give so much to such and such, and so much to such and such.' And it has already belonged to such and such (as it is too late). CHAPTER باب No title or number is given to this Chapter. He (ہللا عليه و آله وسلم whoever has the longest hand. So, they started measuring their hands with a stick and Ummul Momineen Sauda's ہللا تعالی عنہا) (رضئ hand turned out to be the longest. When Zainab bint Jahsh we came to know,(رضئ ہللا تعالی عنہ) died first of all in the caliphate of Umar (رضئ ہللا تعالی عنہا) 14

19 that the long hand was a symbol of practicing charity, so she was the first to follow the Prophet charity. and she used to love to do (صلى ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) CHAPTER (12) ب اب ص د ق ة ال ع ال ن ي ة To give charity openly و ق و ل ه : }ال ذ ين ي ن ف ق ون أ م و ال ه م ب الل ي ل و الن ه ار س ر ا و ع ال ن ي ة { إ ل ى ق و ل ه : }و ال ه م ي ح ز ن ون { ال ذ ين ي ن ف ق ون أ م و ال ه م ب الل ي ل و الن ه ار س ر ا و ع ال ن ي ة ف ل ه م أ ج ر ه م ع ن د - Allah And the Statement of [Those who spend their wealth (in charity) by night ر ب ه م و ال خ و ف ع ل ي ه م و ال ه م ي ح ز ن ون and day, secretly and openly, their reward is with their Lord; and there shall be no fear upon them nor shall they grieve.] (Al-Baqara - 274) There is no Hadith in this chapter. CHAPTER (13) ب اب ص د ق ة الس ر To give charity secretly و ق ال للا ت ع ال ى: }و إ ن ت خ ف وه ا و ت ؤ ت وه ا ال ف ق ر اء ف ه و خ ي ر ل ك م {. و ق ال أ ب و ه ر ي ر ة ر ض ي للا ع ن ه ع ن الن ب ي ص ل ى للا ع ل ي ه و س ل م : و ر ج ل ت ص د ق ب ص د ق ة ف أ خ ف اه ا ح ت ى ال ت ع ل م ش م ال ه م ا ص ن ع ت ي م ين ه إ ن ت ب د وا الص د ق ات ف ن ع م ا ه ي و إ ن ت خ ف وه ا - (ع ز و ج ل ( Allah And the Statement of [ If you give charity openly, it is well and good و ت ؤ ت وه ا ال ف ق ر اء ف ه و خ ي ر ل ك م (for you). And if you give it to the poor hidden (from everyone), it is the (رضئ ہللا تعالی عنہ) best for you.] (Al-Baqara - 271). Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, a person who gives in charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given (then he will be under the shade of Allah on the Day of Resurrection). 15

He went out with his object of charity and unknowingly gave it to a thief. Next morning the people said that he had given his object of charity to a thief. (On hearing that) he said, O Allah! All the praises are for you. I will give alms again. And so he again went out with his alms and (unknowingly) gave it to an adulteress. Next morning the people said that he had given his alms to an adulteress last night. The man said, O Allah! All the praises are for you. (I gave my alms) to an adulteress. I will give alms again. So he went out with his alms again and (unknowingly) gave it to a rich person. (The people) next morning said that he had given his alms to a wealthy person. He said, O Allah! All the praises are for you. (I had given alms) to a thief, to an adulteress and to a wealthy man. Then someone came and said to him, the alms which you gave to the thief, might make him abstain from stealing, and that given to the adulteress might make her abstain from illegal sexual intercourse (adultery), and that given to the wealthy man might make him take a lesson from it and spend his wealth which Allah has given him, in Allah's cause. Ma'an bin Yazid ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that he, his father, and grandfather gave the pledge of allegiance to Allah's Apostle ہللا عليه و آله وسلم).(صلى The Prophet ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى got me engaged and then got me married. One day I went to the Prophet ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى with a complaint. My father Yazid had taken some gold coins for charity and kept them with a man in the mosque (to give them to the poor). But I went and took them and brought them to him (my father). My father said, by Allah, I did not intend to give them to you. he took (the case) to Allah's Apostle ہللا عليه و آله وسلم).(صلى On that Allah's Apostle ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, O Yazid, you will be rewarded for what you intended. O Man, whatever you have taken is yours. CHAPTER (16) باب الص د ق ة ب ال ي م ين To give objects of charity with the right hand Sahih al-bukhari Vol 2, Bk 24, Hadith # 027 ح د ث ن ا م س د د ح د ث ن ا ي ح ي ى ع ن ع ب ي د للا ق ال ح د ث ن ي خ ب ي ب ب ن ع ب د الر ح م ن ع ن ح ف ص ب ن ع اص م ع ن أ ب ي ه ر ي ر ة رضى ہللا عنه ع ن الن ب ي صلى ہللا عليه وسلم ق ال " س ب ع ة ي ظ ل ه م للا ت ع ال ى ف ي ظ ل ه ي و م ال ظ ل إ ال ظ ل ه إ م ام ع د ل و ش اب ن ش أ ف ي ع ب اد ة للا و ر ج ل ق ل ب ه م ع ل ق ف ي ال م س اج د و ر ج ال ن ت ح اب ا ف ي للا اج ت م ع ا ع ل ي ه و ت ف ر ق ا ع ل ي ه و ر ج ل د ع ت ه ام ر أ ة ذ ات م ن ص ب و جم ال ف ق ا ل إ ن ي أ خ اف للا و ر ج ل ت ص د ق ب ص د ق ة ف أ خ ف اه ا ح ت ى ال ت ع ل م ش م ال ه م ا ت ن ف ق ي م ين ه و ر ج ل ذ ك ر للا خ ال ي ا ف ف اض ت ع ي ن اه ". Abu Huraira ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that the Prophet ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, seven people will be shaded by Allah under His shade on the day when there will be no shade except His. They are, (i) a just ruler, (ii) a young man who has been brought up in the worship of Allah, (iii) a man whose heart is attached to the mosque, (iv) two persons who love each other only for Allah's sake and they meet and part in Allah's cause only, (v) a man who refuses the call of a charming woman of noble birth for an illegal sexual intercourse with her and says, I am afraid of Allah, (vi) a person who practices charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given, (vii) a person who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes get flooded with tears. 17

CHAPTER (17) باب م ن أ م ر خ اد م ه ب الص د ق ة و ل م ي ن او ل ب ن ف س ه Whoever ordered his servant to give something in charity and did not give it himself و ق ال أ ب و م وس ى ع ن الن ب ي ص ل ى للا ع ل ي ه و س ل م : ه و أ ح د ال م ت ص د ق ين صلى ہللا ( Prophet reported that the (رضئ ہللا تعالی عنہ) Abu Musa persons said, he is one of the charitable (عليه و آله وسلم Sahih al-bukhari Vol 2, Bk 24, Hadith # 029 ح د ث ن ا ع ث م ان ب ن أ ب ي ش ي ب ة ح د ث ن ا ج ر ير ع ن م ن ص ور ع ن ش ق يق ع ن م س ر وق ع ن ع ائ ش ة رضى ہللا عنها ق ال ت ق ا ل ر س و ل للا صلى ہللا عليه وسلم " إ ذ ا أ ن ف ق ت ال م ر أ ة م ن ط ع ام ب ي ت ه ا غ ي ر م ف س د ة ك ان ل ه ا أ ج ر ه ا ب م ا أ ن ف ق ت و ل ز و ج ه ا أ ج ر ه ب م ا ك س ب و ل ل خ از ن م ث ل ذ ل ك ال ي ن ق ص ب ع ض ه م أ ج ر ب ع ض ش ي ئ ا ". صلى ہللا عليه و آله ( Allah narrated that the Apostle of (رضئ ہللا تعالی عنہا) Ummul Momineen Aisha house) said, when a woman gives in charity some of the foodstuff (which she has in her (وسلم without spoiling it, she will receive the reward for what she has spent, and her husband will receive the reward because of his earning, and the storekeeper will also have a reward similar to it. The reward of one will not decrease the reward of the others. CHAPTER (18) باب ال ص د ق ة إ ال ع ن ظ ه ر غ ن ى 18

23 The wealthy only are required to give in charity و م ن ت ص د ق و ه و م ح ت اج أ و أ ه ل ه م ح ت اج أ و ع ل ي ه د ي ن ف الد ي ن أ ح ق أ ن ي ق ض ى م ن الص د ق ة و ال ع ت ق و ال ه ب ة و ه و ر د ع ل ي ه ل ي س ل ه أ ن ي ت ل ف أ م و ال الن اس. ق ال الن ب ي صل ى للا ع ل ي ه و س ل م :»م ن أ خ ذ أ م و ال الن اس ي ر يد إ ت ال ف ه ا أ ت ل ف ه للا. إ ال أ ن ي ك ون م ع ر وف ا ب الص ب ر ف ي ؤ ث ر ع ل ى ن ف س ه و ل و ك ان ب ه خ ص اص ة ك ف ع ل أ ب ي ب ك ر ر ض ي للا ع ن ه ح ين ت ص د ق ب م ال ه و ك ذ ل ك آث ر األ ن ص ا ر ال م ه اج ر ين و ن ه ى الن ب ي ص ل ى للا ع ل ي ه و س ل م ع ن إ ض اع ة ال م ال ف ل ي س ل ه أ ن ي ض ي ع أ م و ا ل الن اس ب ع ل ة الص د ق ة. و ق ال ك ع ب ر ض ي للا ع ن ه ق ل ت ي ا ر س ول للا إ ن م ن ت و ب ت ي أ ن أ ن خ ل ع م ن م ال ي ص د ق ة إ ل ى للا و إ ل ى ر س ول ه ص ل ى للا ع ل ي ه و س ل م. ق ال : أ م س ك ع ل ي ك ب ع ض م ال ك ف ه و.خ ي ر ل ك. ق ل ت ف إ ن ي أ م س ك س ه م ي ال ذ ي ب خ ي ب ر Whoever gives in charity and he himself or his family are in need or in debt, the payment of debts has precedence over giving in charity or setting a slave free, or giving presents to others, for in this case his act of charity is not acceptable and that person has no right to waste the people's property. And the Prophet ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, Allah will destroy the person who takes other's wealth with the intention of wasting it. But if one is known for his patience and prefers others to himself while he himself is in need, as Abu Bakr ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ did when he gave all his property in charity, it is permissible. Similarly, the Ansar gave preference (صلى ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) to the emigrants over themselves. And the Prophet had forbidden the wasting of wealth, so, a person has no right to waste رضئ ہللا تعالی ( Malik other's wealth, by spending it in charity. And Ka'b bin Apostle, 'O Allah's,(صلى ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) said, I said to Allah's Apostle (عنہ as a part of my repentance I would like to give up all my property in the cause of Allah and His Apostle.' He said, 'you would better keep some of your property.' On that I said, 'I will keep my share that is in Khaibar. Sahih al-bukhari Vol 2, Bk 24, Hadith # 030 ح د ث ن ا ع ب د ان أ خ ب ر ن ا ع ب د للا ع ن ي ون س ع ن الز ه ر ي ق ال أ خ ب ر ن ي س ع يد ب ن ال م س ي ب أ ن ه س م ع أ ب ا ه ر ي ر ة رضى ہللا عنه ع ن الن ب ي صلى ہللا عليه وسلم ق ال " خ ي ر الص د ق ة م ا ك ان ع ن ظ ه ر غ ن ى و اب د أ ب م ن ت ع ول ". Abu Huraira ہللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that the Prophet ہللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, the best charity is that which is done by a wealthy person. And start giving first to your dependents. 19
