Ibn Umar هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ reported that when the Muslims came to Medina, they gathered and sought to know the time of prayer, but no one summoned them. One day they discussed the matter, and some of them said: Use something like the bell of the رضئ هللا تعالی ( Umar Christians and some of them said: Use horn like that of the Jews. said: Why may not a person be appointed who should call (people) to prayer? The (عنہ Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said: 'O Bilal هللا تعالی عنہ),(رضئ get up and summon (the people) for prayer. 1

Anas هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ reported: Bilal هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ was commanded (by the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ to repeat (the phrases of) Adhan twice and once in Iqama. The narrator said: I made a mention of it before Ayyub هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ who said: Except for saying: Qad Qamatis Salah (the prayer has begun). Anas bin Malik هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ reported that the companions discussed that they should know the timings of prayer by means of something recognized by all. Some of رضئ هللا تعالی ( Bilal them said that fire should be lighted or a bell should be rung. But Iqama. was ordered to repeat the phrases twice in Adhan, and once in (عنہ Sahih Muslim Vol 1, Bk 4, Hadith # 004 و ح د ث ن ي م ح م د ب ن ح ات م ح د ث ن ا ب ه ز ح د ث ن ا و ه ي ب ح د ث ن ا خ ال د ال ح ذ اء ب ه ذ ا اإل س ن اد ل م ا ك ث ر الن اس ذ ك ر وا أ ن ي ع لم وا. ب م ث ل ح د يث الث ق ف ي غ ي ر أ ن ه ق ال أ ن ي ور وا ن ار ا. The above Hadith is transmitted by Khalid Hadhdha with the same chain of transmitters (and the words are): When the majority of the people discussed they 2

7 should know, like the Hadith narrated by al-thaqafi (mentioned above) except for the words:" They (the people) should kindle fire." (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) said that the Apostle of Allah (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Abu Mahdhura taught him Adhan like this: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest; I testify that there is no god but Allah, I testify that there is no god but Allah; I testify that Muhammad Is the Apostle of Allah, I testify that Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah, and it should be again repeated: I testify that there is no god but Allah, I testify that there is no god but Allah; I testify that Muhammad Is the Apostle of Allah, I testify that Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah. Come to the prayer (twice). Come to success (twice). Ishaq added: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest; there Is no god but Allah. 3

8 CHAPTER (4) باب اس ت ح ب اب ات خ اذ م ؤ ذ ن ي ن ل ل م س ج د ال و اح د It Is Recommended To Have Two Mu'adhdhin In a Single Masjid Sahih Muslim Vol 1, Bk 4, Hadith # 007 ح د ث ن ا اب ن ن م ي ر ح د ث ن ا أ ب ي ح د ث ن ا ع ب ي د للا ع ن ن اف ع ع ن اب ن ع م ر ق ال ك ان ل ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم م ؤ ذ ن ان ب ال ل و اب ن أ م م ك ت وم األ ع م ى. Ibn Umar هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ reported that the Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى had two Mu'adhdhins, Bilal and 'Abdullah bin Umm Maktum هللا تعالی عنہما),(رضئ among whom, the (latter) was blind. Sahih Muslim Vol 1, Bk 4, Hadith # 008 و ح د ث ن ا اب ن ن م ي ر ح د ث ن ا أ ب ي ح د ث ن ا ع ب ي د للا ح د ث ن ا ال ق اس م ع ن ع ائ ش ة م ث ل ه. رضئ هللا ( A'isha This Hadith has been narrated on the authority of Ummul Momineen transmitters. by another chain of (تعالی عنہا CHAPTER (5) باب ج و از أ ذ ان األ ع م ى إ ذ ا ك ان م ع ه ب ص ير It is Permissible for a blind man to call the Adhan So long as there is a man with him who sees Sahih Muslim Vol 1, Bk 4, Hadith # 009 ح د ث ن ي أ ب و ك ر ي ب م ح م د ب ن ال ع ال ء ال ه م د ان ي ح د ث ن ا خ ال د - ي ع ن ي اب ن م خ ل د - ع ن م ح م د ب ن ج ع ف ر ح د ث ن ا ه ش ام ع ن أ ب يه ع ن ع ائ ش ة ق ال ت ك ان اب ن أ م م ك ت وم ي ؤ ذ ن ل ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم و ه و أ ع م ى. 4

9 Ummul Momineen A'isha هللا تعالی عنہا) (رضئ reported that Ibn Umm Maktum used to pronounce Adhan at the behest of Allah's Apostle هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى (despite the fact) that he was blind. Sahih Muslim Vol 1, Bk 4, Hadith # 010 و ح د ث ن ا م ح م د ب ن س ل م ة ال م ر اد ي ح د ث ن ا ع ب د للا ب ن و ه ب ع ن ي ح ي ى ب ن ع ب د للا و س ع يد ب ن ع ب د الر ح م ن ع ن ه ش ام ب ه ذ ا اإل س ن ا د م ث ل ه. A Hadith like this has been transmitted by Hisham. CHAPTER (6) باب اإل م س اك ع ن اإل غ ار ة ع ل ى ق و م ف ي د ار ال ك ف ر إ ذ ا س م ع ف يه م األ ذ ان Refraining from attacking people in Dar Al- Kufr (Non-Muslim Lands) if the Adhan is heard among them Sahih Muslim Vol 1, Bk 4, Hadith # 011 و ح د ث ن ي ز ه ي ر ب ن ح ر ب ح د ث ن ا ي ح ي ى - ي ع ن ي اب ن س ع يد - ع ن ح م اد ب ن س ل م ة ح د ث ن ا ث اب ت ع ن أ ن س ب ن م ال ك ق ال ك ان ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم ي غ ير إ ذ ا ط ل ع ال ف ج ر و ك ان ي س ت م ع األ ذ ان ف إ ن س م ع أ ذ ان ا أ م س ك و إ ال أ غ ار ف س م ع ر ج ال ي ق ول للا أ ك ب ر للا أ ك ب ر. ف ق ال ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم " ع ل ى ال ف ط ر ة ". ث م ق ال أ ش ه د أ ن ال إ ل ه إ ال للا أ ش ه د أ ن ال إ ل ه إ ال للا. ف ق ال ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم " خ ر ج ت م ن الن ار ". ف ن ظ ر وا ف إ ذ ا ه و ر اع ي م ع ز ى. (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) reported that the Apostle of Allah (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Anas bin Malik used to attack the enemy when it was dawn. He would listen to the Adhan; so if he heard an Adhan, he stopped, otherwise made an attack. Once on hearing a man say: (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, the Apostle of Allah remarked: He is following al-fitra. Then hearing him say: I testify that there is no god but Allah. there is no god but Allah, the Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said: You have come out of the Fire (of Hell). They looked at him and found that he was a goat herd. 5

10 CHAPTER (7) باب اس ت ح ب اب ال ق و ل م ث ل ق و ل ال م ؤ ذ ن ل م ن س م ع ه ث م ي ص ل ي ع ل ى الن ب ي ص ل ى للا ع ل ي ه و س ل م ث م ي س أ ل للا ل ه ال و س يل ة It is recommended for the one who hears the Mu'adhdhin to repeat his words, then to send صلى هللا عليه و ( Prophet Durood/blessing upon the to grant him (ع ز و ج ل ( Allah and supplicate (آله وسلم Prophet's ( هللا عليه و آله وسلم (صلى Wasilah Sahih Muslim Vol 1, Bk 4, Hadith # 012 ح د ث ن ي ي ح ي ى ب ن ي ح ي ى ق ال ق ر أ ت ع ل ى م ال ك ع ن اب ن ش ه اب ع ن ع ط اء ب ن ي ز يد الل ي ث ي ع ن أ ب ي س ع يد ال خ د ر ي أ ن ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم ق ا ل " إ ذ ا س م ع ت م الن د اء ف ق ول وا م ث ل م ا ي ق ول ال م ؤ ذ ن ". (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) narrated that the Prophet (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Abu Sa'id al-khudri said : When you hear the call (to prayer), repeat what the Mu'adhdhin pronounces. Sahih Muslim Vol 1, Bk 4, Hadith # 013 ح د ث ن ا م ح م د ب ن س ل م ة ال م ر اد ي ح د ث ن ا ع ب د للا ب ن و ه ب ع ن ح ي و ة و س ع يد ب ن أ ب ي أ ي وب و غ ي ر ه م ا ع ن ك ع ب ب ن ع ل ق م ة ع ن ع ب د الر ح م ن ب ن ج ب ي ر ع ن ع ب د للا ب ن ع م ر و ب ن ال ع اص أ ن ه س م ع الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم ي ق و ل " إ ذ ا س م ع ت م ال م ؤ ذ ن ف ق ول وا م ث ل م ا ي ق ول ث م ص ل وا ع ل ى ف إ ن ه م ن ص ل ى ع ل ى ص ال ة ص ل ى للا ع ل ي ه ب ه ا ع ش ر ا ث م س ل وا للا ل ي ال و س يل ة ف إ ن ه ا م ن ز ل ة ف ي ال ج ن ة ال. "ت ن ب غ ي إ ال ل ع ب د م ن ع ب اد للا و أ ر ج و أ ن أ ك ون أ ن ا ه و ف م ن س أ ل ل ي ال و س يل ة ح ل ت ل ه الش ف اع ة صلى هللا عليه و آله ( Apostle reported Allah's (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Abdullah bin Amr bin al-aas as saying: When you hear the Mu'adhdhin, repeat what he says, then invoke a (وسلم blessing upon me, for everyone who invokes a blessing on me will receive ten blessings from Allah; then beg from Allah my Wasila, which is a rank in Paradise fitting for only one of Allah's servants, and I hope that I may be that one. If anyone who supplicates that he be given my Wasila, he will be assured of my intercession. 11 ح و ل و ال ق و ة إ ال ب ا لل. ث م ق ال ح ى ع ل ى ال ف ال ح. ق ال ال ح و ل و ال ق و ة إ ال ب ا لل. ث م ق ال للا أ ك ب ر للا أ ك ب ر. ق ال للا أ ك ب ر للا أ ك ب ر. ث م ق ال ال إ ل ه إ ال للا. ق ال ال إ ل ه إ ال للا. م ن ق ل ب ه د خ ل ال ج ن ة ". صلى هللا عليه و ( Allah reported that the Apostle of (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Umar bin al-khattab said: When the Mu'adhdhin says: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and (آله وسلم one of you should make this response: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest; (and when the Mu'adhdhin) says: I testify that there is no god but Allah, one should respond: I testify that there is no god but Allah, and when he says: I testify that Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah, one should make a response: I testify that Muhammad is Allah's Apostle. When he (the Mu'adhdhin) says: Come to prayer, one should make a response: There is no might and no power except with Allah. When he (the Mu'adhdhin) says: Come to salvation, one should respond: There is no might and no power except with Allah, and when he (the Mu'adhdhin) says: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, then make a response: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. When he (the Mu'adhdhin) says: There is no god but Allah, and he who makes a re- sponse from the heart: There is no god but Allah, he will enter Paradise. Sahih Muslim Vol 1, Bk 4, Hadith # 015 ح د ث ن ا م ح م د ب ن ر م ح أ خ ب ر ن ا الل ي ث ع ن ال ح ك ي م ب ن ع ب د للا ب ن ق ي س ال ق ر ش ي ح و ح د ث ن ا ق ت ي ب ة ب ن س ع يد ح د ث ن ا ل ي ث ع ن ا لح ك ي م ب ن ع ب د للا ع ن ع ام ر ب ن س ع د ب ن أ ب ي و ق اص ع ن س ع د ب ن أ ب ي و ق اص ع ن ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم أ ن ه ق ا ل " م ن ق ال ح ين ي س م ع ال م ؤ ذ ن أ ش ه د أ ن ال إ ل ه إ ال للا و ح د ه ال ش ر يك ل ه و أ ن م ح م د ا ع ب د ه و ر س ول ه ر ض يت ب ا لل ر ب ا و ب م ح م د ر س وال و ب اإل س ال م د ين ا. غ ف ر ل ه ذ ن ب ه ". ق ال اب ن ر م ح ف ي ر و اي ت ه " م ن ق ال ح ين ي س م ع ال م ؤ ذ ن و أ ن ا أ ش ه د ". و ل م ي ذ ك ر ق ت ي ب ة ق و ل ه و أ ن ا. Sa'd bin Abu Waqqas هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ reported that the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) said: If anyone says on hearing the Mu'adhdhin: I testify that there is no god but Allah alone. Who has no partner, and that Muhammad هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى is His servant and His صلى هللا عليه و ( Mohammad Apostle, (and that) I am satisfied with Allah as my Lord, with as Apostle. and with Islam as deen, his sins would be forgiven. In the narration (آله وسلم transmitted by Ibn Rumh the words are:" He who said on hearing the Mu'adhdhin and verily I testify." ' Qutaiba has not mentioned his words:" And I." Yahya narrated it on the authority of his uncle that he had been sitting in the company of Mu'awiya bin Abu Sufyan هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ when the Mu'adhdhin called (Muslims) to prayer. Mu'awiya said: I heard the Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى saying the Mu'adhdhins will have the longest necks on the Day of Resurrection. (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) reported it on the authority of Jabir (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Abu Sufyan that he had heard the Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى say: When Satan hears the call to prayer, he runs away to a distance like that of Rauha. Sulaiman said: I asked him about Rauha. He replied: It is at thirty-six miles from Medina. 13 to hear its voice and when it subsides, he comes back and distracts (the minds of those who stand for prayer). Suhail reported that his father sent him to Banu Haritha along with a boy or a man. Someone called him by his name from an enclosure. He (the narrator) said: The person with me looked towards the enclosure but saw nothing. I made a mention of that to my father. He said: If I knew that you would meet such a situation I would have never sent you (there), but (bear in wind) whenever you hear such a call (from the evil spirits) pronounce the Adhan. for I have heard Abu Huraira هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ say that the Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said: Whenever Adhan is proclaimed, Satan runs back vehemently. Abu Huraira ( هللا تعالی عنہ (رضئ reported that the Apostle هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said When the call to prayer is made, Satan runs back and breaks wind so as not to hear the call being made, and when the call is finished. he turns round. When Iqama is proclaimed he turns his back, and when it is finished he turns round to distract a man, saying: Remember such and such; remember such and such, referring to something the man 9

14 did not have in his mind, with the result that he does not know how much he has prayed. A Hadith like it has been narrated by Abu Huraira هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ but for these words: "He (the man praying) does not know how much he has prayed. CHAPTER (9) باب اس ت ح ب اب ر ف ع ال ي د ي ن ح ذ و ال م ن ك ب ي ن م ع ت ك ب ير ة اإل ح ر ام و الر ك وع و ف ي الر ف ع م ن الر ك وع و أ ن ه ال ي ف ع ل ه إ ذ ا ر ف ع م ن الس ج ود It is recommended to raise the hands level with the shoulders when saying the opening takbir, when bowing and when rising from bowing. Salim narrated it on the authority of his father who reported that he saw the Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى raising his hands apposite the shoulders at the time of beginning the prayer and before bowing down and after coming back to the position after bowing, but he did not raise them between two prostrations. Sahih Muslim Vol 1, Bk 4, Hadith # 026 ح د ث ن ي م ح م د ب ن ر اف ع ح د ث ن ا ح ج ي ن - و ه و اب ن ال م ث ن ى - ح د ث ن ا الل ي ث ع ن ع ق ي ل ح و ح د ث ن ي م ح م د ب ن ع ب د للا ب ن ق ه ز اذ ح د ث ن ا س ل م ة ب ن س ل ي م ان أ خ ب ر ن ا ي ون س ك ال ه م ا ع ن الز ه ر ي ب ه ذ ا اإل س ن اد ك م ا ق ال اب ن ج ر ي ج ك ان ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم إ ذ ا ق ا م ل لص ال ة ر ف ع ي د ي ه ح ت ى ت ك ون ا ح ذ و م ن ك ب ي ه ث م ك ب ر. This Hadith has been transmitted with the same chain of transmitters by az-zuhri as narrated by Ibn Juraij (who) said, when the Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى stood up for prayer, he raised hands (to the height) apposite the shoulders and then recited Takbir. Abu Qilaba reported that he saw Malik bin Huwairith هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ raising his hands at the beginning of prayer and raising his hands before bowing down, and raising his hands after lifting his head from the state of bowing, and he narrated that the Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى used to do like this. Sahih Muslim Vol 1, Bk 4, Hadith # 028 ح د ث ن ي أ ب و ك ام ل ال ج ح د ر ي ح د ث ن ا أ ب و ع و ان ة ع ن ق ت اد ة ع ن ن ص ر ب ن ع اص م ع ن م ال ك ب ن ال ح و ي ر ث أ ن ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم ك ان إ ذ ا ك ب ر ر ف ع ي د ي ه ح ت ى ي ح اذ ي ب ه م ا أ ذ ن ي ه و إ ذ ا ر ك ع ر ف ع ي د ي ه ح ت ى ي ح اذ ي ب ه م ا أ ذ ن ي ه و إ ذ ا ر ف ع ر أ س ه م ن الر ك وع ف ق ال " س م ع للا ل م ن ح م د ه ". ف ع ل م ث ل ذ ل ك. صلى هللا عليه و ( Allah reported that the Apostle of (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Malik bin Huwairith raised his hands apposite his ears at the time of reciting the Takbir (at the time of (آله وسلم beginning the prayer) and then again raised his hands apposite the ears at the time of 11

16 bowing and when he lifted his head after bowing he said: Allah listened to him who praised Him, and did like it (raised his hands up to the ears). Sahih Muslim Vol 1, Bk 4, Hadith # 029 و ح د ث ن اه م ح م د ب ن ال م ث ن ى ح د ث ن ا اب ن أ ب ي ع د ي ع ن س ع يد ع ن ق ت اد ة ب ه ذ ا اإل س ن اد أ ن ه ر أ ى ن ب ي للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم و ق ا ل ح ت ى ي ح اذ ي ب ه م ا ف ر وع أ ذ ن ي ه. This Hadith has been transmitted by Qatada with the same chain of transmitters that he saw the Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى doing this (raising his hands) till they were opposite the lobes of ears. CHAPTER (10) باب إ ث ب ات الت ك ب ير ف ي ك ل خ ف ض و ر ف ع ف ي الص ال ة إ ال ر ف ع ه م ن الر ك وع ف ي ق ول ف يه س م ع للا ل م ن ح م د ه Affirming the Takbir for every movement up or down in the prayer, except when rising from ruku' when one should say: Sami'-Allahu-liman Hamidah (Allah hears those who praise Him) Sahih Muslim Vol 1, Bk 4, Hadith # 030 و ح د ث ن ا ي ح ي ى ب ن ي ح ي ى ق ال ق ر أ ت ع ل ى م ال ك ع ن اب ن ش ه اب ع ن أ ب ي س ل م ة ب ن ع ب د الر ح م ن أ ن أ ب ا ه ر ي ر ة ك ان ي ص ل ي ل ه م ف ي ك ب ر ك ل م ا خ ف ض و ر ف ع ف ل م ا ان ص ر ف ق ال و للا إ ن ي أل ش ب ه ك م ص ال ة ب ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم. Abu Salama reported that Abu Huraira هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ led prayer for them and recited Takbir when he bent and raised himself (in ruku' and sujud) and after completing (the prayer) he said: By Allah my prayer has the best resemblance with the prayer of the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى amongst you. 17 ح م د ه ". ح ين ي ر ف ع ص ل ب ه من الر ك وع ث م ي ق ول و ه و ق ائ م " ر ب ن ا و ل ك ال ح م د ". ث م ي ك ب ر ح ين ي ه و ي س اج د ا ث م ي ك ب ر ح ين ي ر ف ع ر أ س ه ث م ي ك ب ر ح ين ي س ج د ث م ي ك ب ر ح ين ي ر ف ع ر أ س ه ث م ي ف ع ل م ث ل ذ ل ك ف ي الص ال ة ك ل ه ا ح ت ى ي ق ض ي ه ا و ي ك ب ر ح ي ن ي ق وم م ن ال م ث ن ى ب ع د ال ج ل وس ث م ي ق ول أ ب و ه ر ي ر ة إ ن ي أل ش ب ه ك م ص ال ة ب ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم. صلى هللا عليه و آله ( Allah reported that when the Apostle of (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Abu Huraira got up for prayer, he would say the Takbir (Allahu Akbar) when standing, then say (وسلم the Takbir when bowing. then say:" Allah listened to him who praised him," when coming to the standing position after bowing, then say while standing:" To Thee, our Lord, be the praise", then recite the Takbir when getting down for prostration, then say the Takbir on raising his head, then say the Takbir on prostrating, then say the Takbir on raising his head. He would do that throughout the prayer till he would complete it, and he would say the Takbir when he would get up at the end of two rak'a after adopting the sitting posture. Abu Huraira هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ said: My prayer has the صلى هللا عليه و آله ( Allah best resemblance among you with the prayer of the Apostle of.(وسلم Sahih Muslim Vol 1, Bk 4, Hadith # 032 ح د ث ن ي م ح م د ب ن ر اف ع ح د ث ن ا ح ج ي ن ح د ث ن ا الل ي ث ع ن ع ق ي ل ع ن اب ن ش ه اب أ خ ب ر ن ي أ ب و ب ك ر ب ن ع ب د الر ح م ن ب ن ال ح ار ث أ ن ه س م ع أ ب ا ه ر ي ر ة ي ق ول ك ان ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم إ ذ ا ق ام إ ل ى الص ال ة ي ك ب ر ح ين ي ق وم ب م ث ل حد يث اب ن ج ر ي ج و ل م ي ذ ك ر ق و ل أ ب ي ه ر ي ر ة. إ ن ي أ ش ب ه ك م ص ال ة ب ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم. Ibn al-harith reported that he had heard Abu Huraira هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ say: The Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى recited Takbir on standing for prayer, and the rest of the Hadith is like that transmitted by Ibn Juraij (recorded above), but he did not mention Abu Huraira هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ as saying:" My prayer has the best resemblance ".(صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) among you with the prayer of the Apostle of Allah Sahih Muslim Vol 1, Bk 4, Hadith # 033 و ح د ث ن ي ح ر م ل ة ب ن ي ح ي ى أ خ ب ر ن ا اب ن و ه ب أ خ ب ر ن ي ي ون س ع ن اب ن ش ه اب أ خ ب ر ن ي أ ب و س ل م ة ب ن ع ب د الر ح م ن أ ن أ ب ا ه ر ي ر ة ك ان - ح ين ي س ت خ ل ف ه م ر و ان ع ل ى ال م د ين ة - إ ذ ا ق ام ل لص ال ة ال م ك ت وب ة ك ب ر. ف ذ ك ر ن ح و ح د يث اب ن ج ر ي ج و ف ي ح د يث ه ف إ ذ ا ق ض اه ا و س ل م أ ق ب ل ع ل ى أ ه ل ال م س ج د ق ال و ال ذ ي ن ف س ي ب ي د ه إ ن ي أل ش ب ه ك م ص ال ة ب ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم. Abu Salama bin Abdur Rahman reported that when Marwan appointed Abu Huraira as his deputy in Medina, he recited Takbir whenever he got up for (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) obligatory prayer, and the rest of the Hadith is the same as transmitted by Ibn Juraij (but with the addition of these words): On completing the prayer with salutation, and he turned to the people in the mosque and said my prayer has the best resemblance ".(صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) among you with the prayer of the Apostle of Allah 13

We said: O Abu Huraira هللا تعالی عنہ),(رضئ what is.(صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) this Takbir? (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) reported that he and Imran bin Husain (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Mutarrif prayed behind Ali Inb Abi Talib هللا تعالی عنہ).(رضئ He recited Takbir when he prostrated, and he recited takbir when he raised his head and he recited takbir while rising up (from the sitting position at the end of two rak'ahs). 19 It is obligatory to recite al-fatiha in every rak'ah? 20 This hadith has also been transmitted by Ma'mar from al-zuhri with the same chain of transmitters with the addition of these words : "and something more". (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم ( Allah narrated that the Apostle of (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Abu Huraira said: If anyone observes prayer in which he does not recite Umm al-qur'an, It is رضئ هللا ( Huraira deficient (he said this three times) and not complete. It was said to Abu : At times we are behind the Imam. He said : Recite it inwardly, for he had (تعالی عنہ heard the Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى declare that Allah ( و ج ل (ع ز said : I have divided the prayer into two halves between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks. When the servant says : Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the universe, Allah says: My servant has praised Me. And when he (the servant) says : The Most Compassionate, the Merciful, Allah the Most High says : My servant has lauded Me. And when he (the servant) says: Master of the Day of judgment, He remarks : My servant has glorified Me. and sometimes He would say : My servant entrusted (his affairs) to Me. And when he (the servant) says :We worship You (our servitude is only for You) and we seek help from You only, He (Allah) says: This is between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for. Then, when he (the servant) says : Lead us (Let us walk) on the straight path; the path of those on whom You have awarded Your bestowal; not the path of those who have been subjected to Your Wrath and the path of those who have gone astray, He (Allah) says: This is for My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for. Sufyan said : 'Ala bin 'Abdur Rahman bin Ya'qub narrated it to me when I went to him and he was confined to his home on account of illness, and I asked him about it. 21 It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ that he had heard the Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى say : He who observed prayer but he did not recite the Umm al-qur'an in it, and the rest of the Hadith is the same as transmitted by Sufyan, and in this Hadith the words are :" Allah ( و ج ل (ع ز said: the prayer is divided into two halves between Me and My servant. The half of it is for Me and the half of it is for My servant." Abu Huraira هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ reported : The Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said: He who said his prayer, but did not recite the opening chapter of al-kitab, his prayer is incomplete. He repeated it thrice. Abu Huraira ( هللا تعالی عنہ (رضئ reported : The Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said: One is not credited with having observed the prayer without the recitation (of al- Fatiha). Ata' narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ who said that one should recite (al-fatiha) in every (rak'ah of) prayer. What we heard (ie. recitation) from the Apostler of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم),(صلى we made you listen to that. And that which he (recited) inwardly, we (recited) inwardly for you. A person said to him: If I add nothing to the (recitation) of the Umm al Qur'an (Surat al-fatiha), would it make the prayer 17

22 incomplete? He (Abu Huraira هللا تعالی عنہ (رضئ said: If you add to that (if you recite some of verses of the Qur'an along with Surat at-fatiha) that is better for you. But if you are contented with it (Surat al-fatiha) only, it is sufficient for you. 'Ata' narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ who said: Recitation (of Surat al-fatiha) in every (rak'ah) of prayer is essential. (The recitation) that we listened from the Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى we made you listen to it. And that which he recited inwardly to us, we recited it inwardly for you. And he who recites Umm al- Qur'an, it is enough for him (to complete the prayer), and he who adds to it (recites some other verses of the Holy Qur'an along with Surat al-fatiha), it is preferable for him. (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Abu Huraira entered the mosque and a person also entered therein and offered prayer, and then came and paid salutation to the Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم).(صلى The Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى returned his salutation and said: Go back and pray, for you have not offered the prayer. He again prayed as he had prayed before, and came to the صلى هللا عليه و ( Allah and saluted him. The Apostle of (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) Apostle of Allah returned the salutation and said: Go back and pray, for you have not offered the (آله وسلم prayer. This (act of repeating the prayer) was done three times. Upon this the person said: By Him Who hast sent you with Truth, whatever better I can do than this, please teach me. He (the Prophet (ﷺ said: When you get up to pray, recite takbir, and then recite whatever you conveniently can from the Qur'an, then bow down and remain quietly in that position, then raise yourself and stand erect; then prostrate yourself and remain quietly in that position; then raise yourself and sit quietly; and do that during all your prayers. 18

Abu Huraira هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that a person entered the mosque and prayed while the Apostle of Allah ( هللا عليه و آله وسلم (صلى was sitting in a nook (of the mosque), and the rest of the Hadith is the same as mentioned above, but with this addition:" When you get up to pray, perform the ablution completely, and then turn towards the Qibla and recite takbir (Allahu Akbar)." CHAPTER (12) باب ن ه ى ال م أ م وم ع ن ج ه ر ه ب ال ق ر اء ة خ ل ف إ م ام ه Prohibiting the follower from reciting aloud behind an Imam Sahih Muslim Vol 1, Bk 4, Hadith # 049 ح د ث ن ا س ع يد ب ن م ن ص ور و ق ت ي ب ة ب ن س ع يد ك ال ه م ا ع ن أ ب ي ع و ان ة ق ال س ع يد ح د ث ن ا أ ب و ع و ان ة ع ن ق ت اد ة ع ن زر ار ة ب ن أ و ف ى ع ن ع م ر ان ب ن ح ص ي ن ق ال ص ل ى ب ن ا ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم ص ال ة الظ ه ر - أ و ال ع ص ر - ف ق ال " أ ي ك م ق ر أ خ ل ف ي ب س ب ح اس م ر ب ك األ ع ل ى ". ف ق ال ر ج ل أ ن ا و ل م أ ر د ب ه ا إ ال ال خ ي ر. ق ال " ق د ع ل م ت أ ن ب ع ض ك م خ ال ج ن يه ا ". (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) lmran bin Husain س ب ح اس م led us In Zuhr or 'Asr prayer. (On concluding it) he said: Who recited behind me (Glorify the name of thy Lord, the Most High)? There upon a person said: It :ر ب ك األ ع ل ى was I, but I intended nothing but goodness. I felt that some one of you was disputing.(صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) with me in (what I was reciting), said the Prophet Sahih Muslim Vol 1, Bk 4, Hadith # 050 ح د ث ن ا م ح م د ب ن ال م ث ن ى و م ح م د ب ن ب ش ار ق اال ح د ث ن ا م ح م د ب ن ج ع ف ر ح د ث ن ا ش ع ب ة ع ن ق ت اد ة ق ال س م ع ت ز ر ار ة ب ن أ و ف ى ي ح د ث ع ن ع م ر ان ب ن ح ص ي ن أ ن ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم ص ل ى الظ ه ر ف ج ع ل ر ج ل ي ق ر أ خ ل ف ه ب س ب ح اس م ر ب ك األ ع ل ى ف ل م ا ان ص ر ف ق ال " أ ي ك م ق ر أ " أ و " أ ي ك م ال ق ار ئ " ف ق ال ر ج ل أ ن ا. ف ق ال " ق د ظ ن ن ت أ ن ب ع ض ك م خ ال ج ن يه ا ". 24 Lord, the Most High) behind him. When he (the Prophet (ﷺ concluded the prayer he said : Who among you recited (the above mentioned verse) or who among you was the reciter? A person said: It was I. Upon this he (the Prophet (ﷺ observed: I thought as if someone among you was disputing with me (in what I was reciting). This Hadith has been narrated by Qatada with the same chain of transmitters that the Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى observed Zuhr prayer and said : I felt that someone among you was disputing with me (in what I was reciting). 25 Shu'ba reported it with the same chain of transmitters. with the addition of these words : " I said to Qatada: Did you hear it from Anas هللا تعالی عنہ)?(رضئ He replied in the affirmative and added: We had inquired of him about it." 'Abda narrated that Umar bin al-khattab هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ used to recite loudly these words : الل ه م و ب ح م د ك ت ب ار ك اس م ك و ت ع ال ى ج د ك و ال إ ل ه غ ي ر ك Glory ]س ب ح ان ك to You, O'Allah, and for You is the Praise, and Blessed is Your Name and Exalted is Your Majesty and there is none رضئ هللا تعالی ( Malik for worship except You]. Qatada informed in writing that Anas bin صلى هللا عليه و آله ( Allah had narrated to him : I observed prayer behind the Apostle of (عنہ They started (loud.(رضئ هللا تعالی عنہم) and Abu Bakr and Umar and 'Uthman (وسلم recitation) with : ال ح م د لل ر ب ال ع ال م ي ن [All Praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds] and did not recite للا الر ح م ن الر ح يم ( loudly )ب س م in the beginning of the recitation or at the end of it. It is reported on the authority of Abu Talha ( هللا تعالی عنہ (رضئ that he had heard Anas bin Malik هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrating this. CHAPTER (14) باب ح ج ة م ن ق ال ال ب س م ل ة آي ة م ن أ و ل ك ل س ور ة س و ى ب ر اء ة The proof of those who say that Basmalah is a verse at the beginning of every Surah, except Bara'ah (at- Tawbah) Sahih Muslim Vol 1, Bk 4, Hadith #
