Ibn Shihab narrated that once Umar bin Abdul Aziz delayed the prayer and Urwa bin (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Zubair went to him and said, "Once in 'Iraq, Al-Mughira bin Shu`ba delayed his prayers and Abi Mas`ud Al-Ansari هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ went to him and said, (عليه السالم) What is this? Don't you know that once Jibreel!(رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) 'O Mughira (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) came and offered the prayer (Fajr prayer) and Allah's Apostle صلى هللا عليه و ( Apostle prayed too, then he prayed again (Zuhr prayer) and so did Allah's did the (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) and again he prayed (Asr prayer) and Allah's Apostle (آله وسلم (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم ( Apostle same; again he prayed (Maghrib prayer) and so did Allah's and again prayed (Isha prayer) and so did Allah's Apostle هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى and (Jibreel السالم (عليه said, 'I was ordered to do so (to demonstrate the prayers prescribed to 1

6 you)?' `Umar (bin `Abdul `Aziz) said to `Urwa, "Be sure of what you Say. Did Jibreel prayers?" at the stated times of the (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) lead Allah's Apostle (عليه السالم) `Urwa replied, "Bashir bin Abi Mas`ud هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated like this on the authority of his father." `Urwa added, "Ummul Momineen Aisha هللا تعالی عنہا) (رضئ told me that Allah's Apostle هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى used to pray Asr when the sunshine was still inside her residence (during the early time of Asr). CHAPTER (2) ب اب : }م ن يب ين إ ل ي ه و ات ق وه و أ ق يم وا الص ال ة و ال ت ك ون وا م ن ال م ش ر ك ين { The saying of Allah - [(Adhere to it), turning in repentance to Him, and fear Him and establish prayer and do not be of those who associate others with Allah.] (Ar-Room-31) Sahih al-bukhari Vol 1, Bk 9, Hadith # 002 ح د ث ن ا ق ت ي ب ة ب ن س ع يد ق ال ح د ث ن ا ع ب اد ه و اب ن ع ب اد ع ن أ ب ي ج م ر ة ع ن اب ن ع ب اس ق ال ق د م و ف د ع ب د ال ق ي س ع ل ى ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم ف ق ال وا إ ن ا م ن ه ذ ا ال ح ى م ن ر ب يع ة و ل س ن ا ن ص ل إ ل ي ك إ ال ف ي الش ه ر ال ح ر ام ف م ر ن ا ب ش ى ء ن أ خ ذ ه ع ن ك و ن د ع و إ ل ي ه م ن و ر اء ن ا. ف ق ال " آم ر ك م ب أ ر ب ع و أ ن ه اك م ع ن أ ر ب ع اإل يم ان ب ا لل ث م ف س ر ه ا ل ه م ش ه اد ة أ ن ال إ ل ه إ ال للا و أ ن ي ر س ول للا." و إ ق ام الص ال ة و إ يت اء الز ك اة و أ ن ت ؤ د وا إ ل ى خ م س م ا غ ن م ت م و أ ن ه ى ع ن الد ب اء و ال ح ن ت م و ال م ق ي ر و الن ق ي ر Ibn Abbas ( هللا تعالی عنہ (رضئ narrated that once a delegation of Abdul Qais came to Allah's Apostle هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى and said, "We belong to such and such branch of the tribe of Rabia and we can only come to you in the sacred months. Order us to do something good so that we may take it from you (carry out) and also invite to it our people whom we have left behind (at home)." The Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, " I order you to do four things and forbid you from four things. (The first four are as follows) : (1) To believe in Allah (And he explained it to them) to testify that there is no God but Allah and I (Mohammad (ﷺ am Allah's Apostle. (2) To offer prayers perfectly (at the stated times). (3) To pay Zakat (obligatory charity). (4) To give me Khumus 2

7 The things forbidden are (1) Dubba, (2) Hantam (3) Muqaiyat, and (4) Naqir (all these are utensils used for the preparation of alcoholic drinks). CHAPTER (3) باب ال ب ي ع ة ع ل ى إ ق ام ة الص ال ة To give the Baya (pledge of allegiance) for offering of Salah Sahih al-bukhari Vol 1, Bk 9, Hadith # 003 ح د ث ن ا م ح م د ب ن ال م ث ن ى ق ال ح د ث ن ا ي ح ي ى ق ال ح د ث ن ا إ س م اع يل ق ال ح د ث ن ا ق ي س ع ن ج ر ير ب ن ع ب د للا ق ال ب اي ع ت ر س و ل للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم ع ل ى إ ق ام الص ال ة و إ يت اء الز ك اة و الن ص ح ل ك ل م س ل م. Jabir bin Abdullah هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that 'I gave 'Baya' the pledge of allegiance to Allah's Apostle هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى to offer prayers perfectly, to pay Zakat regularly, and to give good advice to every Muslim. CHAPTER (4) باب الص ال ة ك ف ار ة Salah is expiation (of sins) Sahih al-bukhari Vol 1, Bk 9, Hadith # 004 ح د ث ن ا م س د د ق ال ح د ث ن ا ي ح ي ى ع ن األ ع م ش ق ال ح د ث ن ي ش ق يق ق ال س م ع ت ح ذ ي ف ة ق ال ك ن ا ج ل وس ا ع ن د ع م ر رضى هللا عنه ف ق ال أ ي ك م ي ح ف ظ ق و ل ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم ف ي ال ف ت ن ة ق ل ت أ ن ا ك م ا ق ال ه. ق ال إ ن ك ع ل ي ه أ و ع ل ي ه ا ل ج ر ي ء. ق ل ت " ف ت ن ة الر ج ل ف ي أ ه ل ه و م ال ه و و ل د ه و ج ار ه ت ك ف ر ه ا الص ال ة و الص و م و الص د ق ة و األ م ر و الن ه ى ". ق ال ل ي س ه ذ ا أ ر يد و ل ك ن ال ف ت ن ة ال ت ي ت م وج ك م ا ي م وج ال ب ح ر. ق ال ل ي س ع ل ي ك م ن ه ا ب أ س ي ا أ م ير ال م ؤ م ن ين إ ن ب ي ن ك و ب ي ن ه ا ب اب ا م غ ل ق ا. ق ال أ ي ك س ر أ م ي ف ت ح ق ال ي ك س ر. ق ال إ ذ ا ال ي غ ل ق أ ب د ا. ق ل ن ا أ ك ان ع م ر ي ع ل م ال ب اب ق ال ن ع م ك م ا أ ن د ون ال غ د الل ي ل ة إ ن ي ح د ث ت ه ب ح د يث ل ي س ب األ غ ال ي ط. ف ه ب ن ا أ ن ن س أ ل ح ذ ي ف ة ف أ م ر ن ا م س ر وق ا ف س أ ل ه ف ق ال ال ب اب ع م ر. Shaqiq narrated that he had heard Hudhaifa هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ saying, "Once I was sitting with `Umar هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ and he said, 'Who among you remembers the statement of 3

8 Allah's Apostle هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى about the afflictions?' I said, 'I know it as the Prophet ( هللا عليه و آله وسلم (صلى had said it.' `Umar هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ said, 'No doubt you are bold.' I said, 'The afflictions caused for a man by his wife, money, children and neighbor are expiated by his prayers, fasting, charity and by enjoining (what is good) and forbidding (what is evil).' `Umar هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ said, 'I did not mean that but I asked رضئ هللا - (Hudhaifa about that affliction which will spread like the waves of the sea.' I said, 'O leader of the faithful believers! You need not be afraid of it as there is a (تعالی عنہ closed door between you and it.' `Umar هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ asked, Will the door be broken or opened?' I replied, 'It will be broken.' `Umar هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ said, 'Then it will never be closed again.' I was asked whether `Umar هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ knew that door. I replied that he knew it as one knows that there will be night before the tomorrow morning. I narrated a Hadith that was free from any misstatement" The sub narrator added that they deputized Masruq to ask Hudhaifa هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ (about the door). Hudhaifa himself." (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) said, "The door was Umar (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Sahih al-bukhari Vol 1, Bk 9, Hadith # 005 ح د ث ن ا ق ت ي ب ة ق ال ح د ث ن ا ي ز يد ب ن ز ر ي ع ع ن س ل ي م ان الت ي م ي ع ن أ ب ي ع ث م ان الن ه د ي ع ن اب ن م س ع ود أ ن ر ج ال أ ص اب م ن ام ر أ ة ق ب ل ة ف أ ت ى الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم ف أ خ ب ر ه ف أ ن ز ل للا }أ ق م الص ال ة ط ر ف ى الن ه ار و ز ل ف ا م ن الل ي ل إ ن ال ح س ن ات ي ذ ه ب ن الس ي ئ ا ت{. ف ق ال الر ج ل ي ا ر س ول للا أ ل ي ه ذ ا ق ال " ل ج م يع أ م ت ي ك ل ه م ". Ibn Mas'ud هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that a man kissed a woman (unlawfully) and then و أ ق م الص ال ة - revealed and informed him. Allah (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم ( Prophet went to the [And establish prayer at the ذ ل ك ذ ك ر ى ل لذ اك ر ين إ ن ال ح س ن ات ي ذ ه ب ن الس ي ئ ات ط ر ف ي الن ه ار و ز ل ف ا م ن الل ي ل two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who remember.] (Hood - 114). The man asked Allah's Apostle هللا عليه و آله وسلم),(صلى "Is it for me?" He said, "It is for all my followers." CHAPTER (5) باب ف ض ل الص ال ة ل و ق ت ه ا Excellence of offering Salah at prescribed times Sahih al-bukhari Vol 1, Bk 9, Hadith # 006 ح د ث ن ا أ ب و ال و ل يد ه ش ام ب ن ع ب د ال م ل ك ق ال ح د ث ن ا ش ع ب ة ق ال ال و ل يد ب ن ال ع ي ز ار أ خ ب ر ن ي ق ال س م ع ت أ ب ا ع م ر و الش ي ب ان ي ي ق ول ح د ث ن ا ص اح ب ه ذ ه الد ار و أ ش ار إ ل ى د ار ع ب د للا ق ال س أ ل ت الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم أ ى ال ع م ل أ ح ب إ ل ى للا ق ا ل " الص ال ة ع ل ى و ق ت ه ا ". ق ال ث م أ ى ق ال " ث م ب ر ال و ال د ي ن ". ق ال ث م أ ى ق ال " ال ج ه اد ف ي س ب يل للا ". ق ال ح د ث ن ي ب ه ن و ل و اس ت ز د ت ه ل ز اد ن ي. 4

9 Abdullah هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that I' asked the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى "which deed is the dearest to Allah?" He replied, "To offer the prayers at their early stated fixed times." I asked, "What is the next (in goodness)?" He replied, "To be good and dutiful to your parents" I again asked, "What is the next (in goodness)?" He replied, 'To participate in Jihad (religious fighting) in Allah's cause." `Abdullah هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ added, "I asked only that much and if I had asked more, the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى would have told me more." CHAPTER (6) باب الص ل و ات ال خ م س ك ف ار ة The five Salah (of the day) are expiation (of sins) Sahih al-bukhari Vol 1, Bk 9, Hadith # 007 ح د ث ن ا إ ب ر اه يم ب ن ح م ز ة ق ال ح د ث ن ي اب ن أ ب ي ح از م و الد ر او ر د ي ع ن ي ز يد ع ن م ح م د ب ن إ ب ر اه يم ع ن أ ب ي س ل م ة ب ن ع ب د الر ح م ن ع ن أ ب ي ه ر ي ر ة أ ن ه س م ع ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم ي ق ول " أ ر أ ي ت م ل و أ ن ن ه ر ا ب ب اب أ ح د ك م ي غ ت س ل ف يه ك ل ي و م خ م س ا م ا ت ق ول ذ ل ك ي ب ق ي م ن د ر ن ه ". ق ال وا ال ي ب ق ي م ن د ر ن ه ش ي ئ ا. ق ال " ف ذ ل ك م ث ل الص ل و ات ال خ م س ي م ح و للا ب ه ا ال خ ط اي ا ". (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) narrated that I" heard Allah's Apostle (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Abu Huraira saying, "If there was a river at the door of anyone of you and he took a bath in it five times a day would you notice any dirt on him?" They said, "Not a trace of dirt would be left." The Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى added, "That is the example of the five prayers with which Allah blots out evil deeds." CHAPTER (7) باب ت ض ي يع الص ال ة ع ن و ق ت ه ا Not offering Salah at its prescribed time Sahih al-bukhari Vol 1, Bk 9, Hadith # 008 ح د ث ن ا م وس ى ب ن إ س م اع يل ق ال ح د ث ن ا م ه د ي ع ن غ ي ال ن ع ن أ ن س ق ال م ا أ ع ر ف ش ي ئ ا م م ا ك ان ع ل ى ع ه د الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم. ق يل الص ال ة. ق ال أ ل ي س ض ي ع ت م م ا ض ي ع ت م ف يه ا. 5

10 Ghailan narrated that Anas هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ said, "I do not find (now-a-days) things as they were (practiced) at the time of the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) ".(صلى Somebody said "The prayer (is as it was.)" Anas هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ said, "Have you not done in the prayer what you have done? Sahih al-bukhari Vol 1, Bk 9, Hadith # 009 ح د ث ن ا ع م ر و ب ن ز ر ار ة ق ال أ خ ب ر ن ا ع ب د ال و اح د ب ن و اص ل أ ب و ع ب ي د ة ال ح د اد ع ن ع ث م ان ب ن أ ب ي ر و اد أ خ ي ع ب د ال ع ز يز ق ا ل س م ع ت الز ه ر ي ي ق ول د خ ل ت ع ل ى أ ن س ب ن م ال ك ب د م ش ق و ه و ي ب ك ي ف ق ل ت م ا ي ب ك يك ف ق ال ال أ ع ر ف ش ي ئ ا م م ا أ د ر ك ت إ ال ه ذ ه الص ال ة و ه ذ ه الص ال ة ق د ض ي ع ت. و ق ال ب ك ر ح د ث ن ا م ح م د ب ن ب ك ر ال ب ر س ان ي أ خ ب ر ن ا ع ث م ان ب ن أ ب ي ر و اد ن ح و ه. Az-Zuhri narrated that he visited Anas bin Malik هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ at Damascus and found him weeping and asked him why he was weeping. He replied, "I do not know صلى هللا عليه و آله ( Apostle anything which I used to know during the life-time of Allah's be)." except this prayer which is being lost (not offered as it should (وسلم CHAPTER (8) باب ال م ص ل ي ي ن اج ي ر ب ه ع ز و ج ل A person in Salah is speaking in private to his Lord Sahih al-bukhari Vol 1, Bk 9, Hadith # 010 ح د ث ن ا م س ل م ب ن إ ب ر اه يم ق ال ح د ث ن ا ه ش ام ع ن ق ت اد ة ع ن أ ن س ق ال ق ال الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم " إ ن أ ح د ك م إ ذ ا ص ل ى ي ن اج ي ر ب ه ف ال ي ت ف ل ن ع ن ي م ين ه و ل ك ن ت ح ت ق د م ه ال ي س ر ى ". و ق ال س ع يد ع ن ق ت اد ة ال ي ت ف ل ق د ام ه أ و ب ي ن ي د ي ه و ل ك ن ع ن ي س ار ه أ و ت ح ت ق د م ي ه. و ق ال ش ع ب ة ال ي ب ز ق ب ي ن ي د ي ه و ال ع ن ي م ين ه و ل ك ن ع ن ي س ار ه أ و ت ح ت ق د م ه. و ق ال ح م ي د ع ن أ ن س ع ن الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم " ال ي ب ز ق ف ي ال ق ب ل ة و ال ع ن ي م ين ه و ل ك ن ع ن ي س ار ه أ و ت ح ت ق د م ه ". Anas هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, "Whenever anyone of you offers his prayer he is speaking in private to his Lord. So he should not ر) spit to his right but under his left foot." Qatada ) said, "He should not ضئ هللا تعالی عنہ spit in front of him but to his left or under his feet." And Shu`ba هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ said, "He should not spit in front of him, nor to his right but to his left or under his foot." Anas هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ said: The Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, "He should neither spit in the direction of his Qibla nor to his right but to his left or under his foot." 6

11 Sahih al-bukhari Vol 1, Bk 9, Hadith # 011 ح د ث ن ا ح ف ص ب ن ع م ر ق ال ح د ث ن ا ي ز يد ب ن إ ب ر اه يم ق ال ح د ث ن ا ق ت اد ة ع ن أ ن س ع ن الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم ق ا ل " اع ت د ل وا ف ي الس ج ود و ال ي ب س ط ذ ر اع ي ه ك ال ك ل ب و إ ذ ا ب ز ق ف ال ي ب ز ق ن ب ي ن ي د ي ه و ال ع ن ي م ين ه ف إ ن ه ي ن اج ي ر ب ه ". Anas هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, "Do the prostration properly and do not put your forearms flat with elbows touching the ground like a dog. And if you want to spit, do not spit in front, nor to the right for the person in prayer is speaking in private to his Lord." CHAPTER (9) باب اإل ب ر اد ب الظ ه ر ف ي ش د ة ال ح ر In severe heat, offer Zuhr prayers when it becomes (a bit) cooler Sahih al-bukhari Vol 1, Bk 9, Hadith # 012 ح د ث ن ا أ ي وب ب ن س ل ي م ان ق ال ح د ث ن ا أ ب و ب ك ر ع ن س ل ي م ان ق ال ص ال ح ب ن ك ي س ان ح د ث ن ا األ ع ر ج ع ب د الر ح م ن و غ ي ر ه ع ن أ ب ي ه ر ي ر ة.و ن اف ع م و ل ى ع ب د للا ب ن ع م ر ع ن ع ب د للا ب ن ع م ر أ ن ه م ا ح د ث اه ع ن ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم أ ن ه ق ا ل " إ ذ ا اش ت د. "ال ح ر ف أ ب ر د وا ع ن الص ال ة ف إ ن ش د ة ال ح ر م ن ف ي ح ج ه ن م Abu Huraira and Abdullah bin `Umar هللا تعالی عنہما) (رضئ narrated that Allah's Apostle said, "If it is very hot, then pray the Zuhr prayer when it becomes (a (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) bit) cooler, as the severity of the heat is from the raging of the Hell-fire." Sahih al-bukhari Vol 1, Bk 9, Hadith # 013 ح د ث ن ا اب ن ب ش ار ق ال ح د ث ن ا غ ن د ر ق ال ح د ث ن ا ش ع ب ة ع ن ال م ه اج ر أ ب ي ال ح س ن س م ع ز ي د ب ن و ه ب ع ن أ ب ي ذ ر ق ال أ ذ ن م ؤ ذ ن الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم الظ ه ر ف ق ال " أ ب ر د أ ب ر د أ و ق ال ان ت ظ ر ان ت ظ ر ". و ق ال " ش د ة ال ح ر م ن ف ي ح ج ه ن م ف إ ذ ا اش ت د ال ح ر ف أ ب ر د وا ع ن الص ال ة ". ح ت ى ر أ ي ن ا ف ى ء الت ل ول. Abu Dhar هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that the Mu'adh-dhin (the caller of Adhan) of the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى pronounced the Adhan for the Zuhr prayer but the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, "Let it be cooler, let it be cooler." Or said, 'Wait, wait, because the severity of heat is from the raging of the Hell-fire. In severe hot weather, pray when it becomes (a bit) cooler and the shadows of hillocks appear." 7

Abu Huraira هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, "In very hot weather delay the Zuhr prayer till it becomes (a bit) cooler because the severity of heat is from the raging of the Hellfire. The fire of Hell complained to its Lord saying : O Lord! My parts are eating (destroying) one another. So Allah allowed it to take two breaths, one in the winter and the other in the summer. The breath in the summer is at the time when you feel the severest heat and the breath in the winter is at the time when you feel the severest cold." Abu Dhar Al-Ghifar هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that "we were with the Prophet (ﷺ) on a journey and the Mu'adh-dhin (the caller of Adhan) wanted to pronounce the Adhan for the Zuhr prayer. The Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, 'Let it become cooler." He again 8

13 (after a while) wanted to pronounce the Adhan but the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said صلى هللا ( Prophet to him, "Let it become cooler till we see the shadows of hillocks." The added, "The severity of heat is from the raging of the Hellfire, and in very (عليه و آله وسلم hot weather pray (Zuhr) when it becomes cooler." CHAPTER (11) باب و ق ت الظ ه ر ع ن د الز و ال The time of Zuhr prayer is when the sun declines (just after mid-day) و ق ال ج اب ر ك ان الن ب ي ص ل ى للا ع ل ي ه و س ل م ي ص ل ي ب ال ه اج ر ة (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) said 'the Prophet (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Jabir used to offer the Zuhr prayer just after midday (as the sun declines at noon. Anas bin Malik هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that Allah's Apostle هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى came out as the sun declined at midday and offered the Zuhr prayer. He then stood on the pulpit and spoke about the Hour (Day of Judgment) and said that in it there would be tremendous things. He then said, "Whoever likes to ask me about anything he can do so and I shall reply as long as I am at this place of mine. Most of the people wept and the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said repeatedly, "Ask me." `Abdullah bin Hudhafa As- Sahmi stood up and said, "Who is my father?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Your father is Hudhafa." The Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى repeatedly said, "Ask me." Then `Umar Lord, knelt before him and said, "We are pleased with Allah as our (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Islam as our religion, and Muhammad هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى as our Prophet." The Prophet then became quiet and said, "Paradise and Hellfire were displayed (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) 9

14 in front of me on this wall just now and I have never seen a better thing (than the former) and a worse thing (than the latter). He used to offer the Zuhr prayer as soon as the sun declined (at noon) and the `Asr at a time when a man might go and return from the farthest place in Medina and find the sun still hot. (The sub-narrator forgot what was said about the Maghrib). He did not mind delaying the Isha prayer to one third of the night or the middle of the night." 15 Ibn Abbas هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narraated that the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى prayed eight rak`at for the Zuhr and `Asr, and seven for the Maghrib and `Isha prayers in Medina." (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) said, "Perhaps those were rainy nights." Anas (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Ayyub said, "May be." 16 صلى هللا عليه و آله ( Apostle narrated that Allah's (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہا) Ummul Momineen Aisha used to pray the `Asr prayers at a time when the sunshine was still inside my (وسلم chamber and no shadow had yet appeared in it. Saiyar bin Salama narrated that 'I along with my father went to Abu Barza Al-Aslami (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) and my father asked him, "How Allah's Apostle (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) used to offer the five compulsory congregational prayers?" Abu Barza said, "The Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى used to pray the Zuhr prayer which you (people) call the first one at midday when the sun had just declined The `Asr prayer at a time when after the prayer, a man could go to the house at the farthest place in Medina (and come back) while the sun was still hot. (I forgot about the Maghrib prayer). The Prophet Loved to delay the `Isha which you call the darkness and he disliked (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم ( sleeping before it and speaking after it. After the Fajr prayer he used to leave when a man could recognize the one sitting beside him and he used to recite between 60 to 100 Ayat (in the Fajr prayer). Anas bin Malik هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated 'We used to pray the `Asr prayer and after that if someone happened to go to the tribe of Bani Amr bin Auf, he would find them still praying the Asr (prayer). Abu Bakr bin `Uthman bin Sahl bin Hunaif narrated that he heard Abu Umama saying: We prayed the Zuhr prayer with `Umar bin Abdul `Aziz and then went to Anas bin Malik هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ and found him offering the Asr prayer. I asked him, "O uncle! 12

17 Which prayer have you offered?" He said 'The Asr and this is (the time of) the prayer of Allah s Apostle هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى which we used to pray with him." Anas bin Malik هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that Allah's Apostle هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى used to offer the `Asr prayer at a time when the sun was still hot and high and if a person went to Al-`Awali (a place) of Medina, he would reach there when the sun was still high. Some of Al Awali of Medina were about four miles or so from the town. Anas bin Malik هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated "We used to pray the `Asr and after that if one of us went to Quba' he would arrive there while the sun was still high. CHAPTER (14) باب إ ث م م ن ف ات ت ه ال ع ص ر The sin of one who misses the Asr prayer (intentionally) Sahih al-bukhari Vol 1, Bk 9, Hadith # 029 ح د ث ن ا ع ب د للا ب ن ي وس ف ق ال أ خ ب ر ن ا م ال ك ع ن ن اف ع ع ن اب ن ع م ر أ ن ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم ق ا ل " ال ذ ي ت ف وت ه ص ال ة ال ع ص ر ك أ ن م ا و ت ر أ ه ل ه و م ال ه ". Ibn `Umar هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that Allah's Apostle هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, "Whoever misses the `Asr prayer (intentionally) then it is as if he lost his family and property." 13

Abu Al-Malih هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that 'we were with Buraida هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ in a صلى هللا ( Prophet battle on a cloudy day and he said, "Offer the `Asr prayer early as the said, "Whoever leaves the `Asr prayer, all his (good) deeds will be (عليه و آله وسلم annulled." CHAPTER (16) باب ف ض ل ص ال ة ال ع ص ر Excellence of the Asr prayer Sahih al-bukhari Vol 1, Bk 9, Hadith # 031 ح د ث ن ا ال ح م ي د ي ق ال ح د ث ن ا م ر و ان ب ن م ع او ي ة ق ال ح د ث ن ا إ س م اع يل ع ن ق ي س ع ن ج ر ير ق ال ك ن ا ع ن د الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم ف ن ظ ر إ ل ى ال ق م ر ل ي ل ة ي ع ن ي ال ب د ر ف ق ال " إ ن ك م س ت ر و ن ر ب ك م ك م ا ت ر و ن ه ذ ا ال ق م ر ال ت ض ام ون ف ي ر ؤ ي ت ه ف إ ن اس ت ط ع ت م أ ن ال ت غ ل ب وا ع ل ى ص ال ة ق ب ل ط ل وع الش م س و ق ب ل غ ر وب ه ا ف اف ع ل وا ". ث م ق ر أ { و س ب ح ب ح م د ر ب ك ق ب ل ط ل وع الش م س و ق ب ل ال غ ر وب {. ق ال إ س م اع يل اف ع ل وا ال ت ف وت ن ك م. صلى هللا عليه و آله ( Prophet said, "We were with the (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Qais narrated that Jarir and he looked at the moon and said, 'Certainly you will see your Lord as you see (وسلم this moon and you will have no trouble in seeing Him. So if you can avoid missing a prayer before the sunrise (Fajr) and a prayer before sunset (Asr), you must do so.' Those who have passed the night with you (or stayed with you) ascend (to the Heaven) and Allah asks them, though He knows everything about you, well, "In what state did you leave my servants?" The angels reply: "When we left them they were praying and when we reached them, they were praying." 20 Salim bin Abdullah هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated "My father said, "I heard Allah's Apostle saying, 'The period of your stay as compared to the previous nations (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) is like the period equal to the time between the Asr prayer and sunset. The people of the Torah were given the Torah and they acted (upon it) till midday then they were exhausted and were given one Qirat (of gold) each. And then the people of the Gospel were given the Gospel and they acted (upon it) till the Asr prayer then they were exhausted and were given one Qirat each. And then we were given the Quran and we acted (upon it) till sunset and we were given two Qirats each. On that the people of both the scriptures said, 'O our Lord! You have given them two Qirats and given us one Qirat, though we have worked more than they.' Allah said, 'Have I usurped some of your right?' They said, 'No.' Allah said: "That is my blessing I bestow upon whomsoever I wish." They worked till midday and they said, 'We are not in need of your reward.' So the man employed another batch and said to them, 'Complete the rest of the day and yours will be the wages I had fixed (for the first batch). They worked until the time of the Asr prayer and said, 'Whatever we have done is for you.' He employed another batch. They worked for the rest of the day till sunset, and they received the wages of the two former batches." Jabir bin Abdullah هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى used to pray the Zuhr at midday, the Asr at a time when the sun was still bright, the Maghrib after sunset (at its stated time) and the `Isha at a variable time. Whenever he saw the people assembled (for `Isha' prayer) he would pray earlier and if the people delayed, he would delay the prayer. And they or the Prophet (ﷺ) used to offer the Fajr Prayers when it is still dark. 22 CHAPTER (19) باب م ن ك ر ه أ ن ي ق ال ل ل م غ ر ب ال ع ش اء Whoever disliked calling the Maghrib prayer as the 'Isha' prayer Sahih al-bukhari Vol 1, Bk 9, Hadith # 040 ح د ث ن ا أ ب و م ع م ر ه و ع ب د للا ب ن ع م ر و ق ال ح د ث ن ا ع ب د ال و ار ث ع ن ال ح س ي ن ق ال ح د ث ن ا ع ب د للا ب ن ب ر ي د ة ق ال ح د ث ن ي ع ب د للا ال م ز ن ي أ ن الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم ق ا ل " ال ت غ ل ب ن ك م األ ع ر اب ع ل ى اس م ص ال ت ك م ال م غ ر ب ". ق ال األ ع ر اب و ت ق ول ه ي ال ع ش اء. Abdullah Al-Muzani هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, "Do not be influenced by bedouins regarding the name of your Maghrib prayer which is called `Isha' by them." CHAPTER (20) باب ذ ك ر ال ع ش اء و ال ع ت م ة و م ن ر آه و اس ع ا The mention of 'Isha' and 'Atamah' (Salah at the time of darkness of night) and whoever took the two names as one and the same ق ال أ ب و ه ر ي ر ة ع ن الن ب ي ص ل ى للا ع ل ي ه و س ل م :»أ ث ق ل الص ال ة ع ل ى «ال م ن اف ق ين ال ع ش اء و ال ف ج ر و ق ال : ل و ي ع ل م ون م ا ف ي ال ع ت م ة و ال ف ج ر Abu Hurairah ( هللا تعالی عنہ (رضئ narrated that the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, the most difficult and hardest prayers for the hypocrites are the Isha and Fajr. He added, had they known what is (the reward of) the Isha and the Fajr, they would have come to attend these even if they had to crawl. 18

23 ق ال أ ب و ع ب د للا و اال خ ت ي ار أ ن ي ق ول ال ع ش اء ل ق و ل ه ت ع ال ى: }و م ن ب ع د ص ال ة ال ع ش اء { Abu Abdullah هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ said, 'And it is better that one should call it 'Isha' because of the saying of Allah [And after the Isha prayer.] (An-Noor - 58) و ي ذ ك ر ع ن أ ب ي م وس ى ق ال ك ن ا ن ت ن او ب الن ب ي ص ل ى للا ع ل ي ه و س ل م ع ن د ص ال ة ال ع ش اء ف أ ع ت م ب ه ا رضئ هللا تعالی ( Musa And it has been related of Abu that he said, 'We used to be with the Prophet (عنہ at Isha prayer from time to time (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) and he would pray it late.' و ق ال اب ن ع ب اس و ع ائ ش ة أ ع ت م الن ب ي ص ل ى للا ع ل ي ه و س ل م ب ال ع ش ا ء And Ibn Abbas هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ and Ummul Momineen Aisha هللا تعالی عنہا) (رضئ said, 'The Prophet prayer. delayed the Isha (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) و ق ال ب ع ض ه م ع ن ع ائ ش ة أ ع ت م الن ب ي ص ل ى للا ع ل ي ه و س ل م ب ال ع ت م ة Then some of them reported on the authority of Ummul Momineen Aisha هللا تعالی عنہا),(رضئ the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى delayed the 'Atama' (Salah at the time of darkness of night) prayer..و ق ال ج اب ر ك ان الن ب ي ص ل ى للا ع ل ي ه و س ل م ي ص ل ي ال ع ش اء صلى هللا ( Prophet said, the (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) And Jabir Isha. used to pray (عليه و آله وسلم. و ق ال أ ب و ب ر ز ة ك ان الن ب ي ص ل ى للا ع ل ي ه و س ل م ي ؤ خ ر ال ع ش ا ء And Abu Barza هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ said, 'the Prophet prayer.' used to delay Isha (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) 19

24 .و ق ال أ ن س أ خ ر الن ب ي ص ل ى للا ع ل ي ه و س ل م ال ع ش اء اآلخ ر ة صلى هللا ( Prophet said, 'the (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) And Anas prayer. delayed the Isha (عليه و آله وسلم و ق ال اب ن ع م ر و أ ب و أ ي وب و اب ن ع ب اس ر ض ي للا ع ن ه م ص ل ى الن ب ي ص ل ى للا ع ل ي ه و س ل م ال م غ ر ب و ال ع ش اء رضئ هللا ( Abbas And Ibn Umar, Abu Ayyub and Ibn (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) said, 'the Prophet (تعالی عنہم prayed Maghrib and Isha. (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) narrated that one night Allah's Apostle (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Abdullah led us in the `Isha' prayer and that is the one called Al-Atama (Salah at the time of darkness of night) by the people. After the completion of the prayer, he faced us and said, "Do you know the importance of this night? Nobody present on the surface of the earth tonight will be living after one hundred years from this night." Explanation Probably that was a blessed night ( م ب ار ك ة (ل ي ل ة and the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى was emphasizing that the lives of the people on planet earth are limited and it is important for them to do as much virtuous deeds as possible and take advantage of the blessed nights. CHAPTER (21) باب و ق ت ال ع ش اء إ ذ ا اج ت م ع الن اس أ و ت أ خ ر وا The time of the Isha prayer. If the people get together (pray earlier), and if they come late (delay it) 20

Muhammad bin Amr narrated 'We asked Jabir bin Abdullah هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ about the prayers of the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم).(صلى He said, "He used to pray Zuhr prayer at midday, the Asr when the sun was still hot, and the Maghrib after sunset (at its stated time). The Isha was offered early if the people gathered, and used to be delayed if their number was less; and the morning prayer was offered when it was still dark. " CHAPTER (22) باب ف ض ل ال ع ش اء The excellence of Isha prayer Sahih al-bukhari Vol 1, Bk 9, Hadith # 043 ح د ث ن ا ي ح ي ى ب ن ب ك ي ر ق ال ح د ث ن ا الل ي ث ع ن ع ق ي ل ع ن اب ن ش ه اب ع ن ع ر و ة أ ن ع ائ ش ة أ خ ب ر ت ه ق ال ت أ ع ت م ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم ل ي ل ة ب ال ع ش اء و ذ ل ك ق ب ل أ ن ي ف ش و اإل س ال م ف ل م ي خ ر ج ح ت ى ق ال ع م ر ن ام الن س اء و الص ب ي ا ن. ف خ ر ج ف ق ال أل ه ل ال م س ج د " م ا ي ن ت ظ ر ه ا أ ح د م ن أ ه ل األ ر ض غ ي ر ك م ". صلى هللا عليه و آله ( Apostle narrated that Allah's (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہا) Ummul Momineen Aisha once delayed the `Isha' prayer and that was during the days when Islam still had (وسلم (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) did not come out till `Umar (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) not spread. The Prophet informed him that the women and children had slept. Then he came out and said to the people of the mosque : "None among the dwellers of the earth had been waiting for it (`Isha prayer) except you." Abu Musa هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated "My companions, who came with me in the boat and I landed in the plain of But-haan ( ب ط ح ان.(ب ق يع The Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى was in Medina at that time. One of us used to go to the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى by turns every night at the time of the `Isha prayer. Once I along with my companions went to the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى and he was busy in some of his affairs, so the `Isha' prayer was delayed to the middle of the night He then came out and led the people (in prayer). After finishing from the prayer, he addressed the people present there saying, "Be patient! Don't go away. Have the glad tiding. It is from the blessing of Allah upon you that none among mankind has prayed at this time save you." Or said, "None except you has prayed at this time." Ibn Shihab narrated from `Urwa that Ummul Momineen Aisha هللا تعالی عنہا) (رضئ said : رضئ هللا ( `Umar delayed the `Isha' prayer till (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) "Once Allah's Apostle slept. reminded him by saying, "The prayer!" The women and children have (تعالی عنہ Then the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى came out and said, 'None amongst the dwellers of the earth has been waiting for it (the prayer) except you." `Urwa said, "Nowhere except in Medina the prayer used to be offered (in those days)." He further said, "The Prophet used to offer the `Isha' prayer in the period between the (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) disappearance of the twilight and the end of the first third of the night." Ibn Juraij narrated from Nafi`that Abdullah bin `Umar هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ said, "Once Allah's Apostle هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى was busy (at the time of the `Isha'), so the prayer was delayed so much so that we slept and woke up and slept and woke up again. The Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى came out and said, 'None among the dwellers of the earth but you have been waiting for the prayer." Ibn Umar هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ did not find any harm in praying it earlier or in delaying it unless he was afraid that sleep might overwhelm him and he might miss the prayer, and sometimes he used to sleep before the `Isha' prayer. Ibn Juraij said, "I said to `Ata', 'I heard Ibn Abbas هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ saying: Once Allah's Apostle هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى delayed the `Isha' prayer to such an extent that the people رضئ هللا ( Al-Khattab slept and got up and slept again and got up again. Then `Umar bin `Ata' about the prayer.' (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) stood up and reminded the Prophet (تعالی عنہ 23
