Allah's Apostle (وسلم offered as two Rak`a followed by two Rak`a and so on and if anyone is afraid of the approaching dawn (Fajr prayer) he should pray one Rak`a and this will be Witr for all the Rak`a which he has prayed before. Nafi told that Abdullah bin Umar هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ used to say Taslim between (the first) two Rak`a and (the third) odd one in the Witr prayer, when he wanted to attend to a certain matter (during that interval between the Rak`a). Ibn Abbas هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that once he spent the night in the house of Ummul Momineen Maimuna هللا تعالی عنہا) (رضئ (his aunt). He slept across the bed while Allah's Apostle slept till (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) and his wife slept length wise. The Prophet (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) midnight or nearly so and woke up rubbing his face and recited ten verses from Surat Al-`Imran. Allah's Apostle هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى went towards a leather skin and performed ablution in the most perfect way and then stood for the prayer. I did the same and stood beside him. The Prophet put his right hand on my head, twisted my ear and then prayed two rak`a (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) five times and then ended his prayer with witr. He laid down till the Mu'adh-dhin came then he stood up and offered two rak`a (Sunnah of Fajr prayer) and then went out and offered the Fajr prayer. Abdullah bin `Umar هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that the Prophet ( هللا عليه و آله وسلم (صلى said, Night prayer is offered as two rak`a followed by two rak`a and so on, and if you want to finish it, pray only one rak`a which will be witr for all the previous rak`a. Al-Qasim said, Since we attained the age of puberty we have seen some people offering a three-rak`a prayer as witr and all that is permissible. I hope there will be no harm in it. (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) narrated that Allah's Apostle (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہا) Ummul Momineen A'isha used to pray eleven rak`a at night and that was his night prayer and each of his prostrations lasted صلى هللا عليه و آله Apostle( for a period enough for one of you to recite fifty verses, before Allah's raised his head. He also used to pray two rak`a (Sunnah) before the (compulsory) Fajr (وسلم prayer and then lie down on his right side till the Mu'adh-dhin came to him for the prayer. CHAPTER (2) باب س اع ات ال و ت ر The timing of the Salat al-witr ق ال أ ب و ه ر ي ر ة أ و ص ان ي الن ب ي ص ل ى للا ع ل ي ه و س ل م ب ال و ت ر ق ب ل الن و م Abu Hurairah said, the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى told me to offer Witr before sleeping. Sahih al-bukhari Vol 2, Bk 14, Hadith # 006 ح د ث ن ا أ ب و الن ع م ان ق ال ح د ث ن ا ح م اد ب ن ز ي د ق ال ح د ث ن ا أ ن س ب ن س ير ين ق ال ق ل ت ال ب ن ع م ر أ ر أ ي ت الر ك ع ت ي ن ق ب ل ص ال ة ال غ د اة أ ط يل ف يه م ا ال ق ر اء ة ف ق ال ك ان الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم ي ص ل ي م ن الل ي ل م ث ن ى م ث ن ى و ي وت ر ب ر ك ع ة و ي ص ل ي الر ك ع ت ي ن ق ب ل ص ال ة.ال غ د اة و ك أ ن األ ذ ان ب أ ذ ن ي ه. ق ال ح م اد أ ى س ر ع ة Anas bin Sireen narrated that he asked asked Ibn Umar ( هللا تعالی عنہ,(رضئ what was his opinion about the two rak`a before the Fajr prayer, as to prolonging the recitation in them? He said, the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى used to pray at night two rak`a followed by two and so on, and end the prayer by one rak`a witr. He used to offer two rak`a before the Fajr prayer immediately after the Adhan." (Hammad, the sub-narrator said, that meant (that he prayed them) quickly. Sahih al-bukhari Vol 2, Bk 14, Hadith # 007 3
ح د ث ن ا ع م ر ب ن ح ف ص ق ال ح د ث ن ا أ ب ي ق ال ح د ث ن ا األ ع م ش ق ال ح د ث ن ي م س ل م ع ن م س ر وق ع ن ع ائ ش ة ق ال ت ك ل الل ي ل أ و ت ر ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم و ان ت ه ى و ت ر ه إ ل ى الس ح ر. صلى هللا عليه و آله ( Allah reported that the Apostle of (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہا) Ummul Momineen Aisha offered witr prayer at different nights at various hours extending (from the Isha) up to the (وسلم last hour of the night. CHAPTER (3) باب إ يق اظ الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم أ ه ل ه ب ال و ت ر The Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى used to wake his family up for the Witr prayer Sahih al-bukhari Vol 2, Bk 14, Hadith # 008 ح د ث ن ا م س د د ق ال ح د ث ن ا ي ح ي ى ق ال ح د ث ن ا ه ش ام ق ال ح د ث ن ي أ ب ي ع ن ع ائ ش ة ق ال ت ك ان الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم ي ص ل ي و أ ن ا ر اق د ة م ع ت ر ض ة ع ل ى ف ر اش ه ف إ ذ ا أ ر اد أ ن ي وت ر أ ي ق ظ ن ي ف أ و ت ر ت. Ummul Momineen A'isha هللا تعالی عنہا) (رضئ narrated that the Prophet ( هللا عليه و آله وسلم (صلى used to offer his night prayer while I was sleeping across in his bed. Whenever he intended to offer the witr prayer, he used to wake me up and I would offer the witr prayer. CHAPTER (4) باب ل ي ج ع ل آخ ر ص ال ت ه و ت ر ا Witr as the last Salah (at night) Sahih al-bukhari Vol 2, Bk 14, Hadith # 009 ح د ث ن ا م س د د ق ال ح د ث ن ا ي ح ي ى ب ن س ع يد ع ن ع ب ي د للا ح د ث ن ي ن اف ع ع ن ع ب د للا ع ن الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم ق ا ل " اج ع ل وا آخ ر ص ال ت ك م ب الل ي ل و ت ر ا ". 4
Abdullah bin `Umar هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said, make witr as your last prayer at night. CHAPTER (5) باب ال و ت ر ع ل ى الد اب ة To offer the Witr while riding on an animal Sahih al-bukhari Vol 2, Bk 14, Hadith # 010 ح د ث ن ا إ س م اع يل ق ال ح د ث ن ي م ال ك ع ن أ ب ي ب ك ر ب ن ع م ر ب ن ع ب د الر ح م ن ب ن ع ب د للا ب ن ع م ر ب ن ال خ ط اب ع ن س ع يد ب ن ي س ار أ ن ه ق ال ك ن ت أ س ير م ع ع ب د للا ب ن ع م ر ب ط ر يق م ك ة ف ق ال س ع يد ف ل م ا خ ش يت الص ب ح ن ز ل ت ف أ و ت ر ت ث م ل ح ق ت ه ف ق ال ع ب د للا ب ن ع م ر أ ي ن ك ن ت ف ق ل ت خ ش يت الص ب ح ف ن ز ل ت ف أ و ت ر ت. ف ق ال ع ب د للا أ ل ي س ل ك ف ي ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم أ س و ة ح س ن ة ف ق ل ت ب ل ى و للا. ق ال ف إ ن ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم ك ان ي وت ر ع ل ى ال ب ع ير. Sa`id bin Yasar narrated that he was going to Makka in the company of Abdullah bin Umar and when I apprehended the approaching dawn, I dismounted and offered the (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) witr prayer and then joined him. Abdullah bin Umar هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ said, Where have you been? I replied, I apprehended the approaching dawn so I dismounted and prayed witr. Abdullah هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ said, Is not it sufficient for you to follow the good example of صلى ( Apostle I replied, Yes, by Allah. He said, Allah's?(صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) Allah's Apostle journey). used to pray witr on the back of the camel (while on a (هللا عليه و آله وسلم CHAPTER (6) باب ال و ت ر ف ي الس ف ر Offering Witr while on a Journey Sahih al-bukhari Vol 2, Bk 14, Hadith # 011 ح د ث ن ا م وس ى ب ن إ س م اع يل ق ال ح د ث ن ا ج و ي ر ي ة ب ن أ س م اء ع ن ن اف ع ع ن اب ن ع م ر ق ال ك ان الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم ي ص ل ي ف ي الس ف ر ع ل ى ر اح ل ت ه ح ي ث ت و ج ه ت ب ه ي وم ئ إ يم اء ص ال ة الل ي ل إ ال ال ف ر ائ ض و ي وت ر ع ل ى ر اح ل ت ه. 5
Ibn `Umar هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى used to offer Nawafil on his Rahila (mount) facing its direction by signals, but not the compulsory prayer. He also used to pray witr on his mount. CHAPTER (7) باب ال ق ن وت ق ب ل الر ك وع و ب ع د ه To recite Qunut before and after bowing Sahih al-bukhari Vol 2, Bk 14, Hadith # 012 ح د ث ن ا م س د د ق ال ح د ث ن ا ح م اد ب ن ز ي د ع ن أ ي وب ع ن م ح م د ق ال س ئ ل أ ن س أ ق ن ت الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم ف ي الص ب ح ق ال ن ع م..ف ق يل ل ه أ و ق ن ت ق ب ل الر ك وع ق ال ب ع د الر ك وع ي س ير ا صلى هللا ( Prophet was asked, did the (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Muhammad bin Sireen narrated that Anas affirmative. replied in the (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) recite Qunut in the Fajr prayer? Anas (عليه و آله وسلم He was further asked, did he recite Qunut before bowing? Anas هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ replied, he recited Qunut after bowing for some time (for one month). (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Asim narrated that he asked Anas bin Malik it? replied, definitely it was (recited). Asim said, I asked, before bowing or after (تعالی عنہ Anas هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ replied, before bowing. I added, soo and so has told me that you had informed him that it had been after bowing. Anas هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ said, he told an untruth ( was mistaken, as per Hijazi dialect). Allah's Apostle هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى recited Qunut after صلى هللا عليه و آله ( Prophet added, the (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) bowing for a period of one month. Anas sent about seventy men (who knew the Qur'an by heart) towards the pagans (of Najd) who (وسلم were less than they in number and there was a peace treaty between them and Allah's Apostle (but the Pagans broke the treaty and killed the seventy men). So Allah's (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) Apostle هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى recited Qunut for a period of one month asking Allah to punish them. 6
Sahih al-bukhari Vol 2, Bk 14, Hadith # 014 أ خ ب ر ن ا أ ح م د ب ن ي ون س ق ال ح د ث ن ا ز ائ د ة ع ن الت ي م ي ع ن أ ب ي م ج ل ز ع ن أ ن س ق ال ق ن ت الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم ش ه ر ا ي د ع و ع ل ى ر ع ل و ذ ك و ان. Anas bin Malik ( هللا تعالی عنہ (رضئ narrated that the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى recited Qunut for one month (in the Fajr prayer) asking Allah to punish the tribes of Ral and Dhakwan (of Najd).
