1 1/9 In every langauge, some letters are harder than others. 1 في كل لغة فيه حروف أصعب من غيرها. In Arabic, for example, 2 في اللغة العربية مثلا there are letters like "qaaf", "kaaf", and "thaa", 3 عندك حروف مثل القاف والكاف والثاء and to a lesser degree, "dhaal". 4 وبدرجة أقل حرف الذال. Those letters are hard for the tongue and throat. 5 هالحروف صعبين على اللسان والحنجرة. The letter "qaaf", for example, comes from the furthest point of the tongue. 6 حرف القاف مثلا يخرج من أقصى نقطة في اللسان. Try to pronounce the letter "qaaf" and note where the sound comes from. "Qa"... "Qa" "Qa" 7 حاول أن تنطق حرف القاف ولاحظ من وين يخرج الصوت. 8 ق.. ق... ق. Can you tell where the sound comes from? 9 لاحظت من وين يخرج الصوت The letter "kaaf" is similar. "Albi" (my heart) instead of "qalbi". " Ul" (say) instead of "qul". 21 ألبي بدال قلبي. 22 أول بدال ق ل. "Tu birni" (you bury me) instead of "tuqbiruni". Note that the sounds "ga" and "'a" are easier for the throat than "qa". 23 ولك تي برني بدال تقبرني. 24 لاحظ أن الا صوات ج و أ أسهل على الحنجرة من الصوت ق. In many areas, we replace "th" with "t". 25 مناطق كثيرة تستبدل حرف الثاء بحرف التاء. "Thum" (garlic)... "tum". 26 ثوم توم.

3 3/9 27 كثير... كتير. "Katheer" (a lot)... "kiteer". 28 ثلاثة تلاتة. "Thalaatha" (three)... "tlaateh". 29 والبعض يستبدل حرف الذال بحرف الزا Some replace the sound "th" with "z". 30 أستاذ أستاز. "Ustath" (teacher)... "ustaz". 31 لذيذ لزيز. "Latheeth" (delicious)... "lazeez". 32 هذه هازه. "Hathihi" (this)... "hazihi". 33 مثال أخير على حرف الكاف: A final example for the letter "kaaf": 34 أوكي تحول في حرف الكاف Okay, the transformation of the letter "kaaf" is one of my favorite transformations in the Arabic language. 35 واحد من التحولات المفضلة عندي في اللغة العربية. If there's a "kaaf" with a "kasra" 36 إذا كان فيه كاف مكسورة ك The sound turns to "tch" or "ts" a lot of the time. 37 فكثير ا ما يرتخي الصوت إلى تش أو تس. You hear this a lot in Iraq, the Gulf, and Najd, very clearly. 38 تسمع هذا الشيء في العراق ودول الخليج ونجد بشكل واضح. For instance, "laki" (for you) turns into "latch" or "lits". 39 مثلا لك تتحول إلى لچ أو لتس. "Thawbuki" (your gown) turns to "thawbitch" or "thawbits". 40 ثوبك يتحول إلى ثوبچ أو ثوبتس.

4 4/9 41 هذا التحول قديم جد ا لدرجة أن نتحصل أشعار This transformation is so old that we see poems from times near the beginning of Islam that demonstrate this transformation. 42 قريبة من بداية الا سلام فيها هذا التحول. Note the position of your tongue when you pronounce these transformations. 43 لاحظ موقع لسانك وأنت تنطق كل هالتحولات. The transformed letters are always close to the original letters. 44 الحروف المتحولة داي م ا يكون نطقها مشابه للحروف الا صلية. So this is one of the first changes that happen in a language. 45 فهذا واحد من أول التغيرات اللي تصير في اللغة. Sounds fall away and change, and from them, new letters are produced. Sometimes, letters eat each other, or assimilate into each other. 46 الا صوات ترتخي وتتغير ومنها ينتج حروف جديدة. 47 أحيان ا الحروف تاكل بعضها أو تدغم في بعضها. If you focus on the way people talk around you, 48 إذا ركزت في كلام الناس من حولك you'll notice a lot of words are missing letters. 49 بتلاحظ إن كلمات كثيرة تسقط منها الحروف. The clearest example of assimilation today is the word "illi" (that/which) 50 أوضح مثال على الا دغام اليوم هو كلمة إلي that exists in many Arabic dialects. 51 الموجودة في كثير من اللهجات العربية. 52 في الا صل الكلمة جاية من اسمين الوصل الذي والتي Originally, the word comes from two relative pronouns "allathi" (that - masculine singular) and "allati" (that - feminine singular), But, the letter "laam" ate up everything around it and the word turned into "illi". 53 لكن حرف اللام أكل إلي حوله وصارت الكلمة إلي. Other examples of merging are how repeated sounds disappear in words. "Rassastu" (I packed) becomes "rasseit". 57 رصصت تصير رصيت. "Raddadtu" (I repeated) "raddeit". 58 رددت...رديت. "Maddadtu" (I stretched) "maddeit". 59 مددت...مديت. Merging usually appears in words 60 الا دغام عادة يظهر في الكلمات that are used often in everyday speech. 61 إلي يتكرر استخدامها كثير ا في الحديث اليومي. It's hard to say them every time, I repeated, I packed, I ducked مشوار إنك كل مرة تقول رددت رصصت بططت I ducked, that's it! 63 بطيت وخلاص! But, human laziness will always surprise you 70 ولكن الكسل البشري داي م ا يفاجي ك with how it leads to the invention of new words without us realizing it. Take this as an example: The word "uqbaal" (may you be next). "Congratulations on your marriage!" "Thank you. " 92 ماذا تا كل " تصير " إيش تاكل " Our strange word is a combination of two words: "ay" (which) and "shay" (thing). "What do you eat?" is supposed to be "Which thing are you eating?" What is in the box?... What thing is in the box? 93 كلمتنا العجيبة هي دمج لكلمتين: أي وشيء. 8 8/9 97 في نظرية تقول إن الكلمات شنو أو شو There's a theory that says the words "shnu" (what) or "shu" 98 يرجعوا لنفس المصدر أيض ا. come from the same source. 99 بالتحديد يرجعوا لهذا السو ال: They go back to this question specifically: "Ay shay hu" (which thing is it?) or "ay shay huwa?" " 100 أي شيء هو " أو " أي شيء هو " 101 ما أدري عن صحة النظرية I don't how correct this theory is, but you can imagine for yourself how it was derived from that question. Which thing is it?...
