There are narrations on this topic from Abu Huraira, Abdullah bin Amr, Buraidah and Abu Basra al-gifari, the companion of the Prophet ( هللا تعالی عنہم.(رضئ Imam Tirmidhi said the Hadith of Kharijia bin Hudhafa هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ is a Gharib Hadith as we do not know of it except from the narration of Yazid bin Abi Habib. One of the Muhaddithin (narrators of Ahadith ) made a mistake regarding this Hadith. He said : (from) رضئ هللا ( Al-Ghifari's Abdullah bin Rashid Az-Zurqi and this is wrong. (And Abu Basra 1

6 name is Humail bin Basra and some of them call him Jamil bin Basra that is not (تعالی عنہ correct. (Imam Tirmidhi said) that was narrated to us by Bundar (who said) : Abdur Rahman bin Mahdi narrated to us from Sufyan (from Abu Ishaq). This is more correct than the narration of Abu Bakr bin Ayyash (a narrator in Hadith # 2 above). Mansur bin Al- Mutamir reported a narration from Abu Ishaq which is similar to that of Abu Bakr bi Ayyash. 2

(صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) narrated that the Apostle of Allah (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Abu Huraira ordered him to pray Witr before sleeping. Eisa bin Abi Azzah said : Ash-Shabi would pray Witr during the first part of the night and then sleep (both of them are narrators of this Hadith). Imam Tirmidhi said the Hadith of Abu Huraira هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ is a Hasan Gharib Hadith from this route. There is something on this topic from Abu Dharr هللا تعالی عنہ).(رضئ Abu Thawr Al-Azadi's name is Habib bin Abi Mulaikah. There are those among the people of knowledge among the companions of the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى and those after them who prefer that a man not sleep until he has prayed witr. It has been related that the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said : Whoever among you fears that he will not awaken at the end of the night, then let him pray Witr at its beginning. And whoever among you expects to arise at the end of the night, then let him perform Witr at the end of the night. Indeed the recitation of Quran at the end of the night is attended (by the angels) and it is more virtuous. Masruq narrated that he asked Ummul Momineen Aisha هللا تعالی عنہا) (رضئ about the Witr of the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم).(صلى She said : He would pray Witr at anytime during the night, in the beginning, middle, or towards the end. During the last days before his death, he used to pray Witr before the approach of Sahar. Imam Tirmidhi said, Abu Hasin's name is Uthman bin Asim al-asadi. He said there are رضئ هللا ( Qatadah narrations on this topic from Ali, Jabir, Abu Masud al-ansari and Abu is Hasan (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہا) He said, the Hadith of Ummul Momineen Aisha.(تعالی عنہم Sahih Hadith. This is the view chosen by some of the people of knowledge that Witr is at the end of the night. CHAPTER (5) باب م ا ج اء ف ي ال و ت ر ب س ب ع What has been related about 7 raka for Witr Jami at-tirmidhi, Vol 1, Bk 3, Hadith # 6 ح د ث ن ا ه ن اد ح د ث ن ا أ ب و م ع او ي ة ع ن األ ع م ش ع ن ع م ر و ب ن م ر ة ع ن ي ح ي ى ب ن ال ج ز ار ع ن أ م س ل م ة ق ال ت ك ان الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم ي وت ر ب ث ال ث ع ش ر ة ر ك ع ة ف ل م ا ك ب ر و ض ع ف أ و ت ر ب س ب ع. ق ال و ف ي ال ب اب ع ن ع ائ ش ة. ق ال أ ب و ع يس ى ح د يث أ م س ل م ة ح د يث ح س ن. و ق د ر و ي ع ن الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم ال و ت ر ب ث ال ث ع ش ر ة و إ ح د ى ع ش ر ة و ت س ع و س ب ع و خ م س و ث ال ث و و اح د ة. ق ال إ س ح اق ب ن إ ب ر اه يم م ع ن ى م ا ر و ي أ ن الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم ك ان ي وت ر ب ث ال ث ع ش ر ة ق ال إ ن م ا م ع ن اه أ ن ه ك ان ي ص ل ي م ن الل ي ل ث ال ث ع ش ر ة ر ك ع ة م ع ال و ت ر ف ن س ب ت ص ال ة الل ي ل إ ل ى ال و ت ر. و ر و ى ف ي ذ ل ك ح د يث ا ع ن ع ائ ش ة و اح ت ج ب م ا ر و ي ع ن الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم أ ن ه ق ال " أ و ت ر وا ي ا أ ه ل ال ق ر آن ". ق ال إ ن م ا ع ن ى ب ه ق ي ام الل ي ل ي ق ول إ ن م ا ق ي ام الل ي ل ع ل ى أ ص ح اب ال ق ر آ ن. صلى هللا عليه ( Prophet narrated that the (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہا) Ummul Momineen Umm Salamah would pray Witr with thirteen (Rak'a). When he was older and became weak (و آله وسلم he prayed Witr with seven. رضئ هللا تعالی ( Aisha There is a narration on this topic from Ummul Momineen رضئ هللا تعالی ( Salamah Imam Tirmidhi said, the Hadith of Ummul Momineen Umm.(عنہا would (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم ( Prophet is a Hasan Hadith. It has been reported that the (عنہا pray Witr with thirteen, with eleven, with nine, with seven, with five, with three and 4

Regarding the meaning of what has been reported about the praying Witr with thriteen, Ishaq bin Ibrahim said, it only means that he (عليه و آله وسلم would pray thirteen raka during the night including Witr. So the night prayer (Tahajjud) was included in Witr. He related a Hadith about that from Ummul صلى ( Prophet He also argued using a report that the.(رضئ هللا تعالی عنہا) Momineen Aisha said : pray Witr O'people of the Quran. He said, he only meant the night (هللا عليه و آله وسلم prayer (Tahajjud) by that as if to say that the night prayer (Tahajjud) is only to be performed by those who know the Quran. Ummul Momineen Aishah هللا تعالی عنہا) (رضئ narrated that the night prayer (Tahajjud) of the Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى was thirteen Rak'a, five of which were his Witr, not sitting in any of them except at the end of them. When the Mu'adh-dhin called the Adhan (for Fajr) he would stand to perform two light (Rak'a). Imam Tirmidhi said the Hadith of Ummul Momineen Aisha ( هللا تعالی عنہا (رضئ is a Hasan Sahih Hadith. There is a narration about this from Abu Ayyub (). Some of the people of knowledge, among the companions of the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى and others held the view that Witr was five (rak'a). They said that one has to sit (for Tashah-hud) only in the last raka. Imam Tirmidhi said, he asked Abu Mas'ab Al-Madani about this Hadith that the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى would perform Witr with nine and seven صلى هللا ( Prophet asking how would one perform Witr with nine and seven? He said, the one. would pray two, then two and say Taslim then make it Witr with (عليه و آله وسلم 5

Ali هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that the Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى would pray Witr with three, reciting nine Surah from the Mufassal in them, reciting three Surah in each Rak'a with - ه و للا أ ح د, Say ]ق ل Allah is One] at the end of them. There are narrations on this topic from Imran bin Husain, Ummul Momineen Aisha, Ibn رضئ هللا تعالی ( Ka'b Abbas, Abu Ayyub and Abdur Rahman bin Abza from Ubayy bin صلى ( Prophet There is also a narration from Abdur Rahman bin Abza () from the.(عنہم رضئ ( Ubayy This is how some of them narrated it without mentioning.(هللا عليه و آله وسلم in it. Some of them mentioned it from Abdur Rahman bin Abza from Ubayy (هللا تعالی عنہ bin Ka'b هللا تعالی عنہما).(رضئ Imam Tirmidhi said, there are those among the people of knowledge among the companions of the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى and others who held this view that a man should pray three for Al-Witr. Sufyan said, if one wishes to, he prays Witr with five, if he wishes he prays Witr with three and if he wishes, he prays Witr with one Raka. Sufyan said, what is recommended is that he performs Witr with three raka. This is the view of Ibn Al-Mubarak and the people of Kufa. Mohammad bin Sirin said, they would pray Witr with five, with three and with one raka and they considered all of that to be good. 6

Anas bin Sirin narrated that he asked Ibn Umar هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ about the length of the two Rak'a (before) Al-Fajr. He said the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى would pray two and two during the night, and he would pray Witr with one Rak'a. And he would pray two Rak'ah while he was hearing the Adhan (meaning that they were light). There are narrations on this topic from Ummul Momineen Aisha, Jabir, Al-Fadl bin Abas, Abu Ayyub and Ibn Abbas هللا تعالی عنہم).(رضئ Imam Tirmidhi said the Hadith of Ibn Umar هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ is a Hasan Sahih Hadith. This is acted upon according to صلى هللا عليه و آله ( Prophet some of the people of knowledge among the companions of the and the Tabi'een. They thought that a man should separate between rak'a and a (وسلم third performing Witr with one raka. This is the view of Malik, Ash-Shafii, Ahmad and Ishaq. Ibn Abbas هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated : Allah's Apostle ( هللا عليه و آله وسلم (صلى would recite ق ل ي ا Glorify ]س ب ح the Name of your Lord the Most High] and اس م ر ب ك األ ع ل ى - Witr during [Say, Allah is One ] in each ق ل ه و للا أ ح د Say, O you disbelievers ] and ]أ ي ه ا ال ك اف ر ون Rak'a. There are narrations on this topic from Ali, Ummul Momineen Aisha, Abdur Rahman bin Abza from Ubayy bin Ka'b ( هللا تعالی عنہم,(رضئ (and it has been reported from Abdur Rahman bin Abza) from the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم).(صلى Imam Tirmidhi said it has been reported that the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى would recite Al-Mu'awwidhatain (two Suras); and recite - ه و للا أ ح د, Say ]ق ل Allah is One ] in the third raka. What is preferred by most of the people of knowledge among the companions of the Prophet Glorify ]س ب ح the Name اس م ر ب ك األ ع ل ى - recite and those after them is to (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) ق ل ه و Say, O you disbelievers ] and ]ق ل ي ا أ ي ه ا ال ك اف ر ون of your Lord the Most High] and rak'a. (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہا) Abdul-Aziz bin Juraij narrated that he asked Ummul Momineen Aisha about the recitations of the Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى during Witr. She said : 'In the first he would recite - اس م ر ب ك األ ع ل ى ]س ب ح Glorify the Name of your Lord the Most ق ل ه و - third [ Say, O you disbelievers ] and in the ق ل ي ا أ ي ه ا ال ك اف ر ون - second High], in the Quran). [Say, Allah is One ] and Al-Mu'awwidhatain (last two Suras of the للا أ ح د Imam Tirmidhi said this Hadith is Hasan Gharib. He said Abu Abdul Aziz is the son of Ibn Juraij and the companion of Ata. And Ibn Juraij's name is Abdul Malik bin Abdul Aziz bin Juraij. This Hadith has been reported by Yahya bin Sa'id Al-Ansari from صلى هللا عليه و آله ( Prophet from the (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہا) Amrah from Ummul Momineen Aisha.(وسلم 8

Indeed You decree, and none can pass decree, and none can pass decree upon You, indeed he is not humiliated whom You have befriended, blessed are You our Lord and Exalted.]. Imam Tirmidhi said this Hadith is Hasan as we do not know of it except from this route in the narration of Abu Al-Hawra As-Sadi and his name is Rabia bin Shaiban. There is a narration on this topic from Ali ( هللا تعالی عنہ.(رضئ We do not know anything better than this about the Qunut in Witr from the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم).(صلى The people of knowledge differ over the Qunut in Witr. Ibn Masud هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ held the view that the Qunut was recited in Witr throughout the year and he preferred that the Qunut be before the bowing (Ruku). This is the saying of some of the people of knowledge. It is the view of Sufyan Ath-Thawri, Ibn Al-Mubarak, Ishaq, and the people of Kufa. It has been related that Ali bin Abi Talib هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ would not recite Qunut except in the latter half of Ramadhan after bowing. Some of the people of knowledge followed this. It is the view of Ash-Shafii and Ahmad. 9

14 CHAPTER (11) باب م ا ج اء ف ي الر ج ل ي ن ام ع ن ال و ت ر أ و ي ن س اه What has been related about a man who sleeps past Witr or forgets it Jami at-tirmidhi, Vol 1, Bk 3, Hadith # 14 ح د ث ن ا م ح م ود ب ن غ ي ال ن ح د ث ن ا و ك يع ح د ث ن ا ع ب د الر ح م ن ب ن ز ي د ب ن أ س ل م ع ن أ ب يه ع ن ع ط اء ب ن ي س ار ع ن أ ب ي سع يد ال خ د ر ي ق ال ق ال ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم " م ن ن ام ع ن ال و ت ر أ و ن س ي ه ف ل ي ص ل إ ذ ا ذ ك ر و إ ذ ا اس ت ي ق ظ ". صلى هللا عليه و آله ( Allah narrated that the Apostle of (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri said : 'Whoever sleeps past Witr or forgets it, then let him pray it when he (وسلم remembers it or when he awakens.' Zaid bin Aslam narrated from his father that the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said : 'Whoever sleeps past Witr, let him pray it in the morning. Imam Tirmidhi said this is more correct than the narration before it (# 14 above). Imam Tirmidhi said he heard Abu Dawood As-Sijzi that is Sulaiman bin Al-Ash'at saying that he asked Ahmad bin Hanbal about Abdur Rahman bin Zaid bin Aslam. He said, his brother Abdullah is tolerable. He said, I heard Muhammad mentioning that Ali bin Abdullah said : Abdur Rahman bin Zaid bin Aslam was weak and he said : Abdullah bin Zaid bin Aslam is trustworthy. Some of the people of Kufa followed this Hadith. They say that a man prays Witr when he remembers even if it was after the sun had risen. This is the view of Sufyan Ath-Thawri. Ibn Umar هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said : 'Precede the morning with Al-Witr.' Imam Tirmidhi said this Hadith is Hasan Sahih. Jami at-tirmidhi, Vol 1, Bk 3, Hadith # 17 ح د ث ن ا ال ح س ن ب ن ع ل ي ال خ ال ل ح د ث ن ا ع ب د الر ز اق أ خ ب ر ن ا م ع م ر ع ن ي ح ي ى ب ن أ ب ي ك ث ير ع ن أ ب ي ن ض ر ة عن أ ب ي س ع ي د." أ و ت ر وا ق ب ل أ ن ت ص ب ح وا "ال خ د ر ي ق ال ق ال ر س ول للا صلى هللا عليه وسلم صلى هللا عليه و آله ( Allah narrated that the Apostle of (رضئ هللا تعالی عنہ) Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri you.' said : 'Pray Witr before the morning comes upon (وسلم Jami at-tirmidhi, Vol 1, Bk 3, Hadith # 18 ح د ث ن ا م ح م ود ب ن غ ي ال ن ح د ث ن ا ع ب د الر ز اق أ خ ب ر ن ا اب ن ج ر ي ج ع ن س ل ي م ان ب ن م وس ى ع ن ن اف ع ع ن اب ن ع م ر ع ن الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم ق ال " إ ذ ا ط ل ع ال ف ج ر ف ق د ذ ه ب ك ل ص ال ة الل ي ل و ال و ت ر ف أ و ت ر وا ق ب ل ط ل وع ال ف ج ر ". ق ال أ ب و ع يس ى و س ل ي م ان ب ن م وس ى ق د ت ف ر د ب ه ع ل ى ه ذ ا الل ف ظ. و ر و ي ع ن الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم أ ن ه ق ا ل " ال و ت ر ب ع د ص ال ة الص ب ح ". و ه و ق و ل غ ي ر و اح د م ن أ ه ل ال ع ل م. و ب ه ي ق ول الش اف ع ي و أ ح م د و إ س ح اق ال ي ر و ن ال و ت ر ب ع د ص ال ة الص ب ح. Ibn Umar هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ narrated that the Apostle of Allah هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said : 'When Fajr begins, every Salah of the night and Witr have gone, so pray Witr before Fajr begins.' Imam Tirmidhi said Sulaiman bin Musa is along with the wording. It has been reported that the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى said 'there is no Witr after the Subh prayer'. This is the saying of more than one of the people of knowledge. It is the view of Ash-Shafii, Ahmad and Ishaq. They did not think that Witr could be prayed after the Fajr prayer. The people of knowledge differ over the one who prays Witr during the beginning of the night and then he stands (in prayer) in its latter part. Some of the people of knowledge among the companions of the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى and those after them thought that the Witr is incomplete and invalid unless a rak'a is connected to it, reciting whatever he wants, then he prays witr at the end of his prayer because there are no two Witr in the night. This was attributed to Ishaq. Some of the people of knowledge among the companions of the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى and others said that when one prays Witr during the first part of the night, then sleeps, then he gets up in the latter part, he prays what he wants to. It does not nullify his Witr so he leaves his Witr as it is. This is the saying of Sufyan Ath Thawri, Malik bin Anas, Ahmad, Ibn al-mubarak, Ash-Shafii and the people of Kufa. Some of the people of knowledge among the companions of the and others, followed this. They held the view that a man could pray Witr (هللا عليه و آله وسلم on his mount. This was the view of Ash-Shafii, Ahmad and Ishaq. Some of the people of knowledge said that a man is not to perform Witr on his mount, when he wants to perform Witr he dismounts and prays it on the ground. Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila narrated that no one informed that they saw the Apostle رضئ هللا تعالی ( Hani praying Ad-Duha (Chaasht) except Umm (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) of Allah entered her house on the (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) She narrated that the Apostle of Allah.(عنہا Day of the Conquest of Makkah. He performed Ghusl and performed eight voluntary Rak'a such that she had not ever seen him pray any Salah lighter than them, but that he completed the bowing and prostrations.' Imam Tirmidhi said this Hadith is Hasan Sahih. It is as if Ahmad thought that the most correct thing about this topic was the Hadith of Umm Hani هللا تعالی عنہا).(رضئ They differ over Nu'aim as some of them call him Nu'aim bin Khammar while others Ibn Hammar; and he is called Ibn Habbar and Ibn Hammam. Ibn Hammar is correct. Abu Nu'aim was confused in this, he said : Ibn Khamar then he left that and said, Nuaim from the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم).(صلى Imam Tirmidhi said, Abdu bin Humaid informed me of that from Abu Nu'aim. Imam Tirmidhi said this Hadith is Hasan Gharib. Imam Tirmidhi said Waki, An-Nadr bin Shumail and more than one of the Aimmah reported this Hadith from Nahhas bin Qahm and we do not know of it except from his narration. And (آله وسلم he would leave it until we would say : 'He will not pray it.' Imam Tirmidhi said this Hadith is Hasan Gharib. He said : 'It is an hour in which the gates of the heavens are opened, and I love that a righteous deed should be raised up for me in it.' There are narrations on this topic from Ali and Abu Ayyub هللا تعالی عنہما).(رضئ Imam Tirmidhi said the Hadith of Abdullah bin As-Sa'ib هللا تعالی عنہ) (رضئ is a Hasan Gharib Hadith. It has been reported that the Prophet هللا عليه و آله وسلم) (صلى would pray four Raka after the Zawal (when sun has passed its meridian), not saying the Taslim except in the last of them. Glorious is Allah, Lord of the Magnificent Throne. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. I ask You for that which warrants Your mercy, and that which will determine Your forgiveness, and the spoils (fruits) of every 16

21 righteous deed, and safety from every sin; do not leave a sin for me without forgiving it, nor a worry without relieving it. Or a need that pleases you without granting it. O Most Merciful of those who have mercy]. Imam Tirmidhi said this Hadith is Gharib as there is criticism regarding its chain. Faid bin Abdur Rahman is weak in Hadith and Faid is Abu Al-Warqa. O Allah! If you know that this matter is good for me in my religion or my livelihood, and for my life in the Hereafter - or he said: for my present and future - then make it easy for me, then bless me in it. If You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion and my livelihood and my life in the Hereafter - or he said: for my present and future - then divert it from me and divert me from it, enable me to find the good wherever it is, then make me pleased with it. ] And he mentions his need.' 17
