PAGE 4 February was an eventful month. The KG students did a wonderful job showcasing their creativity this month. They have learned and engaged in many fun activities during the month. ly, KG students were so excited for the Zayed Sports Week events followed by the KG Sports Day, where they had the chance to go to Al Rashidiya Park in Dibba. It was a memorable day of fun and entertainment and they learned the concept of teamwork and cooperation skills through the participation in Sports Day events. In addition to this, they participated in the KG Entrepreneurship Day Event which was held to enhance our KG students learning experience while interacting with the community. We would like to thank the parents of those students who participated in this event with many innovative and creative ideas that they came up with, and made the event a huge success. Ultimately, all the parents are superstars, and it is always a pleasure to meet the parents for the two-day, parent-teacher conference. The students had the opportunity to have the grade students to read books to them. Moreover, they created their own books in class, and they came to school dressed as their favorite book characters, and very enthusiastically shared their favorite characters with their peers and teachers. Finally, our students made so much progress with their phonics, as our principal made it incumbent to dedicate at least twenty minutes on phonics every single morning. PAGE 6 Grade 1 February flew past with the blink of an eye! Grade ones learned exciting topics from conducting and presenting projects whereby students built their confidence. We had different lessons which incorporated with science. Students had fun within their classes. Students were encouraged to read and took part in reading competitions. Students also enjoyed reading buddies with other classes. Grade 2 Grade 2 s had an awe-inspiring month. We built volcanoes and had some incredible presentations and eruptions. We created amazing mini-books and children had fun reading them. The reading buddies in a different environment built our confidence in reading. We look forward to a superb month of March. Grade 3 February was an exciting month full of fun activities and events for our grade 3 s. Reading buddies was a great opportunity to practice our reading skills. Students created a lap book for as well as a Tornado artwork for English. We are looking forward to the last stretch towards the end of the term. We will most definitely end on a high note. Grade 4 Grade 4 students had so much fun working with energy. The theme of energy was incorporated throughout all subjects as part of their overall project themes. The Math challenge was a great success, together with the sports day, having the opportunity to show and use all the energy we had. Through all this, we have learned how to create a research booklet, write comics and present so many of the wonderful energy projects within the UAE. Grade 5 February was an engaging month for English, we practiced informational texts when creating a poster and a power point about our biome project. We made a persuasive poster for living in the UAE, and we learned about how to create a new country! We learned new vocabulary words like: statesman, colonies, merchant and tailors and learned several new topics in grammar. These include synonyms, antonyms, verb tenses and how to spell singular and plural nouns. Grade 6 During the month of February, grade 6 has worked on their persuasive skills. They have learned how to distinguish between fact and opinion and have a point of view on matters, such as Should junk food be sold in the school cafeteria? And Should cellphones be allowed at school? We have implemented some fun work stations in hopes of improving the students academic success. These innovative ideas have been enjoyed by both students and teachers! Grade 7 Fabled February Students were introduced to theme four by discussing the Big Question What do we learn through winning and losing? We were able to understand feelings and emotions from the viewpoint of other people and so, understand their actions and how our actions and words affect those around us. We learned about the different types of loss and how to deal with it in the poems Casey at the Bat, Swift Things are Beautiful, and Buffalo Dusk. Grade 8 November was another stimulating month for grade 8 s, full of fun filled activities and events. Students took part in Diyar talks where students spoke about a topic of interest to them. Students also completed Unit 4, with the theme, Can we see change as it happens, which involved different reading pieces, vocabulary, word study, literary words and writing pieces. This helped them shape their understanding of observing change as it happens in different contexts of their lives and environment. PAGE 8 Grade 9 The Grade 9 s were engaged in some rather thought-provoking discussions this term. Our theme What is the human spirit, created an opportunity to research and engage in activities surrounding iconic leaders such as Sheik Zayed, Mating Luther King and Nelson Mandela, all of whom have displayed great examples of the human spirit. Their term project is also based on this subject. On a more fun side, the Grade 9 s have been involved in learning the power of words, with particular focus on advertising. Here we had fun with word play among other concepts. With the Diyar Talks underway the Grade 9 representatives are eagerly preparing and anticipating their opportunity to express their thoughts and ideas on issues they feel are pertinent. All in all, an interesting and wellrounded month for the Grade 9s! Grade 10 Fabulous February. Students embraced the new Unit theme Can we think with the Heart? They were mesmerized by the question; Should we think with our heart or our brain? The discussions around this question brought about many different viewpoints. They thoroughly enjoyed discovering the life story of Helen Keller. Learning about Helen Keller evoked a lot of emotion from the students. Students had so much fun working on their projects and designing their posters. We are looking forward to the next month. Grade 11 Fantastical February Students were exposed to the fantastical tales of a spirit bear in Touching Spirit Bear and a man that defeated a machine in the tall tale of John Henry. We asked ourselves the question, what does it take to beat the odds? In this unit we looked at situations where seemingly ordinary people experienced great challenges. They showed amazing work in creating boxes /heart shaped papers on which they described Shaikh Zayed. Students of grades 7 and 8 can write and read dialogues in French. Their project consisted of writing books, creating chandeliers on which they wrote information about Shaikh Zayed. High School Math In February we had our Mental Math competition which was a great success. The grade 7 s have completed their project The Amazing Race around the Gulf, that involved simplifying expressions, finding coordinates and learning more about the countries around the Gulf. In Grade 8 students learned more about linear graphs and ratios. They can look forward to doing a STEAM project in class. Grade 9 s learned more about solving systems and experienced the real-life use of solving systems in their projects, although it was a mission keeping them from eating their M&M s. In grade 10 we saw some creative models that was built using different kinds of 3D shapes, for the Dubai EXPO2020. In this they have learned a lot about Architects and what they do. The grade 11 s are continuing to learn about Trigonometry focusing on graphing and solving functions. They can look forward to a fun real-life project. In March there will be formal exams for Grade 7 11. PAGE 12 In high school, students worked on Elementary Science In Elementary the students have been very busy this month. In Grade 1 they have been studying the sky and the objects that can be found in it during the night and the day. The children were very surprised when they discovered that the moon can sometimes be seen in the daytime sky! In Grade 2 the students have been studying volcanos, and earthquakes alongside landforms and are now working on fossils. They have been extremely active, with lots of wonderful practical activities that have helped them to understand these new concepts. In Grade 3 the students have been working on forces, again there have been lots of practical investigations into what happens when a force is applied, and the difference between balanced and unbalanced forces. In Grade 4 the students have been working on weather and just moved onto forces. There should be a lot of fun practical activities while they investigate forces. In Grade 5 the students are working on planets and the solar system. This requires a lot of critical thinking and all the intelligences (IQ, SQ and EQ) to be incorporated so that it can be successful. Since they have a clear understanding of what are their wants and needs are and how to rationalize their limited resources, students will incorporate these concepts into project completion. Grade 9 Learners have acquired skills on being a SMART consumer! Students explored the difference between generic and branded products and understand how they serve the same purpose. Learners have started their project on enhancing their top 5 attractions of their chosen country. They are applying their advertising knowledge on how to make their tourism business to be at its competitive advantage. Students will be creating a budget to show all the expenses and the income that will take place in their organization. The grade 10 s learned about Competitive Pricing in Economics. They had to build a story and explain how Competitive Pricing works. Not only could they give me the definition of Competitive Pricing, they gave examples, advantages and disadvantages. Our Historians have closely analyzed and debated over the Treaty of Versailles and the repercussion of it. They learned that when seated at the table of decision making it is wise to include all parties involved in order for decisions to be effectively executed. While studying World War 1 and America's involvement in it, our Historians have learned how to become critical and independent thinkers. Grade 10 history was fun! PAGE 18 The much awaited Annual Sports Day was held on February 14 th (elementary) and 15 th ( High school). Zayed Sports Day was a very well organized event with fun games and activities for all. High school was divided into four houses representing the colors of the UAE Flag: Red Falcons Green Dragons White Eagles Black Pumas During normal lessons, students from Grade 1 are learning gymnastic and making shapes which is integrated with math. They did amazing projects during their lessons. Grade 2 students continued practicing their skills to further improve dribbling and passing in basketball. Grade 3 students had sessions for dribbling and passing in Football. Grade 4 boys learned dribbling and different types of passing in basketball and the girls had training in handball. Grade 5 boys are practicing handball and the girls are practicing volleyball. For the upper grades 6-11 boys, they are having training sessions in football to improve passing and ball control. As usual it has been a busy month in the Art Department with lots of creating happening. Grade 1 s completed the drawing of four seasons in the tissue box. Making a collage of a volcano made the Grade 2 s excited about cutting and pasting. The Grade 3 s made their collage of an extreme/severe weather. Grade 4 s completed their motion projects and started on signs and symbols. Good and Bad environments were shown in some wonderful collages made by the students - anybody is doubt as to what it good and bad, feel free to come look. Grade 6's have been learning about water and sea creatures in Science and created some lovely mobiles with sea creatures floating in the class. The next step is to make an ocean floor for the fish to swim in, even though it is only in a box. The GCC has been explained to the Grade 7's and they showed their knowledge about the cities and other areas by creating lovely city-scrapers depicting these towns and cities. The Grade 8's were flying high with their kite designs, also part of Mathematics, by using the right angles to create the correct shape for their kites. Some really bright ideas were floating around! If ever we need to design a new 2 Dirham coin for the UAE, our Grade 9's had some innovative ideas. Maybe some will go into designing money in their future. Both the Grade 10's and 11's were working on the development through the centuries and the future. New car logos were created by the Grade 11's and the development of buildings and lighting through the ages were shown by the Grade 10's. PAGE 22 Dear Parent, Sometimes, in the heat, we tend to want to resort to corporal punishment (e.g., hitting our child with our hand or using an object to instill pain in the child) to them our child a lesson; however, this strategy may not be the best route to take. Take heed of the following tips for maintaining discipline: 1. Successful discipline should be geared to the child s developmental stage: Don t expect a child of any age to perform something he or she is not ready for. 2. Children need positive reinforcement: Reward you child for making right choices with smiles, hugs, attention, praise and thanks. Rewards do not need to be toys or candy. 3. Never hit or shake your child: Hitting is not a useful discipline tool for your children. Hitting and other physical punishment are not effective because they teach a child that it is okay to hit people, make children much too angry to be sorry for what they ve done and can hurt a child physically. 4. Discipline is best taught by example: The lessons you teach your child come from what your child sees you do not what you say. You are his or her best teacher and role model. 5. If what you are doing is not working, change it! Your best efforts, even those that worked in the past, may break down. Try to keep sight of your basic principles and always cherish your relationship with your child. 6. Spend time with our child: Spending quality time with your child is priceless. It will not only give you an opportunity to get to know your child more but also provide both of you with opportunity to bond with each other and as result improve your communication.
