Today s Bible reading (Matthew 15: 1-20): Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying, Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread. He answered and said to them, Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? For God commanded, saying, Honor your father and your mother ; and, He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death. But you say, Whoever says to his father or mother, Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God then he need not honor his father or mother. Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition. Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. When He had called the multitude to Himself, He said to them, Hear and understand: Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man. Then His disciples came and said to Him, Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying? But He answered and said, Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch. Then Peter answered and said to Him, Explain this parable to us. So Jesus said, Are you also still without understanding? Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man. Comment of Today s Biblical Verse: God loves a cheerful giver (2Cor 9:7). From a Christian perspective, donation is a great value, best illustrated when every one of us gives each other all what the other need, whether it is in the form of love, empathy or care, or even financially if necessary. The importance of giving comes from the Lord s command to give, and without letting our left hand know what our right hand is doing. Moreover, today s verse tells us to
give with full content and joy, instead of feeling obliged to give. When we give we should not complain, and we should not do it as a favour. Furthermore, the best form of giving is when we give off our needs, and not from the leftovers of what we have! Let s contemplate in the results of giving: God loves the cheerful giver! How great it is to obtain the Lord s approval! Story of the Day: The Wise Man and the Scorpion: A wise man sat meditating by the river. In the process, he saw a scorpion which had fallen on the water. Disturbed by this, he momentarily stopped what he was doing, and tried to save the poor creature from drowning itself. But, as he tried to save it, it defended itself with its venomous sting and caused him severe pains on his hands. Seeing the poor thing crawling back on the rocks he tried to go back to his meditation. However, he observed the scorpion back on the water and struggling for its life. So he halted his prayer and tried to save the arachnid from killing itself. Instinctively, the scorpion stung him once again with its tails and caused the poor man s hand terrible pains. As all of this happens, another man was observing from the top of a ridge. He yelled to the wise man, You fool! Why do you keep on saving that creature only to harm you over and over again? The wise man answered, Don t mind me my friend, my nature is to save, its nature is to harm. Dearest brothers: real love comes from inside. It necessitates we serve others without hidden intentions, and without expecting anything in return. Therefore, it is important for all of us to ignore voices that try to convince us not to help others because others are not worth helping and they would not appreciate it. Our News: Last Sunday, more than 100 people participated in a great spiritual meeting that was held in a town outside Montreal, with the blessings of His Eminence Archbishop Elia Bahi, who celebrated the holy mass, with the help of deacons Faiz Hanouch, and Mina and Dominic Hanna, and after breakfast, his eminence gave a sermon on: first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly on two separate periods, with Christian songs and prayers in between. Children attended the special program that was prepared for them. After lunch, attendants
enjoyed a great time on the lake, and went back home, wishing to repeat such great meetings. Our Syriac church celebrates today the memory of St. Thomas. We thank God for the recovery of Mrs. Therese Naseef, wife of Abdul Maseeh Murad, who underwent a heart surgery. We pray for a fast recovery! Baby Isabella Maria was born to Zahi and Marice Zafaro. Last Friday, a group from St Barsaumo church from Toronto has arrived to Montreal visiting the parish of St. Yacoub church Montreal. Their visit included sport tournaments between the teams from both churches. On Friday night, the board of trustees, together with the help of the ladies auxiliary arranged for a dinner banquet for the visitors. On Saturday, a soccer game for youngsters took place, and ended in winning St. Barsaumo (2-1) followed by a soccer game for the adults, which ended (1-1).
Next Monday July 11 th, the `Camp de Jour will start at our church, lasting till Aug 17. Our kids will attend this excellent sport activity twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 am to 4 pm. In addition to the sport activities, children will learn some spiritual and syriac values.
