Al Adab Al Mufrad ( المفرد (األدب Children and Neighbors Class #16 Chapter 53: ( م ن ال ي ر ح م ال ير ح م (ب اب (Someone who does not show mercy will not be shown mercy) We need to have mercy towards the children. Sometimes it s taken as a source of pride when the father does not show affection to his children. ح د ث ن ا مح م د ب ن ال ع الء ق ال : ح د ث ن ا مع او ي ة ب ن ه ش ام ع ن ش ي ب ان ع ن ف ر اس ع ن ع ط ي ة ع ن أ ب ي ( Hadith: (Abu Sa'id said that the Prophet (.س ع يد ع ن الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم ق ال : م ن ال ي ر ح م ال ير ح م (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: 'Someone who does not show mercy will not be shown mercy.') - Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 95 It s up to you if you want Allah (swt) to have mercy on you on the Day of Judgement, in the grave and in this life. So show mercy to others, especially to your children. Your children need to be kissed, hugged, they need to see that mercy, otherwise how will they know? Subhan Allah. ح د ث ن ا مح م د ب ن س الم ق ال : أ خ ب ر ن ا أ بو مع او ي ة ع ن األ ع م ش ع ن ز ي د ب ن و ه ب و أ ب ي ظ ب ي ان ع ن ( Hadith: (Jarir ibn (. ج ر ير ب ن ع ب د هللا ق ال : ق ال ر سول هللا صلى هللا عليه وسلم: ال ي ر ح م هللا م ن ال ي ر ح م الن ا س 'Abdullah said, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'Allah will not show mercy to someone who does not show mercy to people.") Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 96 We want Allah (swt) to have mercy on us, so why should we be unfair to others? We need to show mercy to others, even disbelievers. Inside your heart, you ask Allah (swt) to guide them, to show them the right way? So what about Muslimeen, even more needs to be shown. You can t say, I hate this person, may Allah (swt) put them in the hellfire, istaghfar Allah. When someone makes a mistake, we shouldn t laugh, this shows no mercy. Or when someone falls, we shouldn t laugh, or when someone sins. Even towards animals we should show mercy. And what you do is what you will get, you can be sure if you make laugh at someone, someone will laugh at you. و ع ن ع ب د ة ع ن ه ش ام ع ن أ ب يه ع ن ع ائ ش ة ر ض ي هللا عن ه ا ق ال ت: أ ت ى الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم ( Hadith: ن اس م ن األع ر اب ف ق ال ل ه ر جل م ن ه م: ي ا ر سول هللا أ تق بلو ن الصب ي ان ف و هللا م ا نق بلهم ف ق ال ر سول هللا صلى هللا ('A'isha said, "Some bedouins came (.عليه وسلم: أ و أ م ل ك إ ن ك ا ن هللا ع ز و ج ل ن ز ع م ن ق ل ب ك الر ح م ة to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. One of their men said to him, 'Messenger of Allah, do you kiss children? By Allah, we do not kiss them.' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'Can I put mercy in your hearts after Allah has removed it from them?'") Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 98 Page 1
هللا The elderly expect the children to kiss them, but the Prophet,(ﷺ) who is such a high position is kissing his grandchildren. So he told this man that Allah (swt) has removed mercy from his heart. ح د ث ن ا أ بو الن ع م ان ق ال : ح د ث ن ا ح م ا د ب ن ز ي د ع ن ع اص م ع ن أ ب ي عث م ان أ ن عم ر ر ض ي هللا ع ن ه ( Hadith: اس ت ع م ل ر جال ف ق ال ال ع ام ل: إ ن ل ي ك ذ ا و ك ذ ا م ن ال و ل د م ا ق ب ل ت و اح د ا م ن هم ف ز ع م عم ر أ و ق ال عم ر: إ ن هللا ع ز (Abu 'Uthman reported that 'Umar wanted to appoint a (. و ج ل ال ي ر ح م م ن ع ب اد ه إ ال أ ب ر ه م man as governor. The governor said, "I have such-and-such a number of children and I have never kissed any of them." 'Umar said, "Allah Almighty will only show mercy to the kindest of His slaves.") Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 99 Omar bin Al Khattab (ra) hired a man and this man didn t kiss his children once. So Omar (ra) said Allah (swt) will not have mercy on His slave except the one who is good to others. Chapter 54: ( الر ح م ة م ئ ة جز ء (ب اب (Mercy consists of a hundred parts) ح د ث ن ا ال ح ك م ب ن ن اف ع ق ال : أ خ ب ر ن ا شع ي ب ع ن الز ه ر ي ق ال : أ خ ب ر ن ا س ع ي د ب ن ال مس يب أ ن أ ب ا هر ي ر ة ( Hadith: ق ال : س م ع ت ر سول صلى هللا عليه وسلم ي قول: ج ع ل هللا ع ز و ج ل الر ح م ة م ئ ة جز ء ف أ م س ك ع ن د ه ت س ع ة و ت س ع ين و أ ن ز ل ف ي األ ر ض جز ء ا و اح د ا ف م ن ذ ل ك ال جز ء ي ت ر اح م ال خ ل ق ح ت ى ت ر ف ع ال ف ر س ح اف ر ه ا ع ن و ل د ه ا (Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him.) خ ش ي ة أ ن تص يب ه and grant him peace, said, "Allah Almighty has divided mercy into one hundred parts. He kept ninety-nine parts and sent down one part to earth. Because of that one single part, creatures are merciful to one another so that even the mare will lift its hooves away from its foal so that it does not trample on it.") Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 100 Allah (swt) made mercy into 100 parts and Allah (swt) can make whatever He wants, subhan Allah. And He held 99 parts of mercy with Him. And He sent only part of the mercy on this earth. Whatever mercy we see on this earth is only one part of Allah s mercy, subhan Allah. Imagine the animals with their children, and they take care of their children with no expectations or reward. Mercy between husband and wife, between people, between children, amongst all of us we are sharing just one part of this mercy. And when we show any mercy, then that is from just one part of Allah s mercy, subhan Allah. The mercy of Allah (swt) is spread all over the earth that the horse will raise its hoofs from hurting its child, subhan Allah. Allah (swt) gave you that mercy and on top of that you are being rewarded when you show that mercy, subhan Allah. Before you have children, you might not like it when you hear other children crying, but when you have a child, Allah (swt) automatically gives you mercy, and the level of mercy is according to what kind of child, a sick child is different from a healthy child, or a naughty child. So we need to activate this mercy. Chapter 55: ( ال و ص اة ب ال ج ار (ب اب (The recommendation to be kind to neighbours) ح د ث ن ا إ س م اع يل ب ن أ ب ي أو ي س ق ال : ح د ث ن ي م ال ك ع ن ي ح ي ى ب ن س ع ي د ق ال : أ خ ب ر ن ي أ بو ب ك ر ب ن مح م د ( Hadith: ع ن ع م ر ة ع ن ع ائ ش ة ر ض ي هللا ع ن ه ا ع ن الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم ق ال : م ا ز ال ج ب ر يل صلى هللا عليه وسلم Page 2
('A'isha reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless (. يوص ين ي ب ال ج ا ر ح ت ى ظ ن ن ت أ ن ه س يو رث ه him and grant him peace, said, "Jibril, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, kept on recommending that I treat neighbours well until I thought that he would order me to treat them as my heirs.") Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 101 JIbreel (as) would come to the Prophet (ﷺ) and constantly advise him about the neighbors until he thought that they would have to inherit him. Neighbors don t have rights over your money, but it just shows the great right neighbors have upon us, subhan Allah. ح د ث ن ا ص د ق ة ق ال : أ خ ب ر ن ا اب ن عي ي ن ة ع ن ع م ر و ع ن ن اف ع ب ن جب ي ر ع ن أ ب ي شر ي ح ال خز اع ي ع ن ( Hadith: الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم ق ال : م ن ك ا ن يؤ م ن ب ا لل و ال ي و م ا ل خ ر ف ل يح س ن إ ل ى ج ار ه و م ن ك ا ن يؤ م ن ب ا لل و ال ي و م (Abu Shurayh al-khuza'i (. ا ل خ ر ف ل يك ر م ض ي ف ه و م ن ك ا ن يؤ م ن ب ا لل و ال ي و م ا ل خ ر ف ل ي قل خ ي ر ا أ و ل ي ص م ت reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day should be good to his neighbours. Anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day should be generous to his guest. Anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day should be say what is good or be silent.") Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 102 What will make you do your best, when you know there s a Day of Judgement ahead of you. When we think it s so far, then it becomes blurry to us. You find when someone passes away in the family, then everyone becomes kind and forgiving to each other, why? Because death was in front of everyone. We need to believe in Allah (swt) and the Day of Judgement because it will motivate us to do good deeds and have good manners it will keep us on our toes. Whoever believes in Allah (swt) and the Day of Judgement: o Then you will be good to your neighbors, and this includes Muslims and non-muslims, good o o and bad neighbors, you need to be patient with them. The Prophet (ﷺ) had a neighbor who was a Jew and he would place dirt and thorns in front of the Prophet s (ﷺ) house every day. Once there was no dirt in front of the house so the Prophet (ﷺ) asked about him, and was told he was sick. So the Prophet (ﷺ) went and visited him, subhan Allah. You will honor your guest, and this is a sign of faith. Sometimes you have unexpected guests, but you need to be good with them, and this reminds you of the story of Ibrahim (as) in Surah Adh Dhariyat. He was good with his guests and Allah (swt) gave him a son, you need to do things without expectations. You will only say what s good or remain quiet. To say what s good is something that will have a good impact. Chapter 56: ( ح ق ال ج ار (ب اب (The neighbour's right) Page 3
ح د ث ن ا أ ح م د ب ن ح م ي د ق ال : ح د ث ن ا مح م د ب ن فض ي ل ع ن مح م د ب ن س ع د ق ال : س م ع ت أ ب ا ظ ب ي ة ال ك ال ع ي ( Hadith: ق ال : س م ع ت ال م ق د ا د ب ن األ س و د ي قول: س أ ل ر سول هللا صلى هللا عليه وسلم أ ص ح اب ه ع ن الزن ا ق الوا: ح ر ام ح ر م ه هللا و ر سوله ف ق ال : أل ن ي ز ن ي الر جل ب ع ش ر ن س و ة أ ي س ر ع ل ي ه م ن أ ن ي ز ن ي ب ام ر أ ة ج ار ه و س أ ل ه م ع ن الس ر ق ة ق الوا: ح ر ام ح ر م ه ا هللا ع ز و ج ل و ر سوله ف ق ال : أل ن ي س ر ق م ن ع ش ر ة أ ه ل أ ب ي ات أ ي س ر ع ل ي ه م ن أ ن ي س ر ق م ن (Al-Miqdad ibn al-aswad reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah.) ب ي ت ج ار ه bless him and grant him peace, asked his Companions about fornication and they said, "It is unlawful. Allah and His Messenger have made it unlawful." He said, "It is less serious for a man to fornicate with ten women than for him to fornicate with his neighbour's wife." Then he asked them about stealing. They replied, "It is unlawful. Allah and His Messenger have made it unlawful." He said, "It is less serious for a man to steal from ten houses than it is for him to steal from his neighbour's house.") Al- Adab Al-Mufrad 103 A man asked the Companions about zina and they told him it s haram, and Allah (swt) and His Messenger (ﷺ) said it s haram. And this shows they re very specific, don t just say it s haram. If a man were to commit zina with ten women, it will be light and easier than to commit zina with his neighbor s wife, subhan Allah. This doesn t mean it s ok to commit zina, not at all, it s haram, but it s even greater to commit it with the neighbors wife. Harming anyone is haram, but harming the neighbors is greater. Stealing is haram, but stealing from the neighbors is greater. Backbiting is haram, but backbiting the neighbors is greater. To steal from ten homes is easier than to steal from the neighbors. This shows you that the rights of the neighbors are ten times more than anyone else. If your neighbors are your relatives, then the rights are more, imagine if they re your parents, then even more so, subhan Allah. If your neighbors are Muslims, then the rights are more. There are so many rights we have, and we ask Allah (swt) before sleeping ( عنا الدين (اقضي to relieve us of our debt, which are the rights we owe. Chapter 57: ( ي ب د أ ب ال ج ار (ب اب (Begin with the neighbour) ح د ث ن ا مح م د ب ن م ن ه ال ق ال : ح د ث ن ا ي ز ي د ب ن زر ي ع ق ال : ح د ث ن ا عم ر ب ن مح م د ع ن أ ب يه ع ن اب ن عم ر ( Hadith: (Ibn 'Umar (.ق ال : ق ال ر سول هللا صلى هللا عليه وسلم: م ا ز ال ج ب ر يل يوص ين ي ب ال ج ا ر ح ت ى ظ ن ن ت أ ن ه س يو رث ه reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Jibril kept on recommending that I treat my neighbours well until I thought that he would order me to treat them as my heirs.") Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 104 Sometimes neighbors are neglected that people only discover they re dead after months when they smell something, subhan Allah. ح د ث ن ا مح م د ب ن س الم ق ال : أ خ ب ر ن ا سف ي ا ن ب ن عي ي ن ة ع ن د او د ب ن ش ابور و أ ب ي إ س م اع يل ع ن مج اه د ( Hadith: ع ن ع ب د هللا ب ن ع م ر و أ ن ه ذب ح ت ل ه ش اة ف ج ع ل ي قول ل غال م ه: أ ه د ي ت ل ج ار ن ا ال ي هود ي أ ه د ي ت ل ج ار ن ا ال ي هود ي Page 4
(Mujahid (. س م ع ت ر سول هللا صلى هللا عليه وسلم ي قول: م ا ز ال ج ب ر يل يوص ين ي ب ال ج ا ر ح ت ى ظ ن ن ت أ ن ه س يو رث ه reported that a sheep was slaughtered for 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr. He asked his slave, 'Have you given any to our Jewish neighbour? Have you given any to our Jewish neighbour? I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, 'Jibril kept on recommending that I treat my neighbours well until I thought that he would order me to treat them as my heirs.'") Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 105 A man slaughtered a sheep and asked his servant, did you give some to our Jewish neighbor? Subhan Allah. And he repeated it again. And this shows you can give your neighbors even if they re non-muslim because it s the right of the neighbors. Chapter 58: ي ه د ي إ ل ى أ ق ر ب ه م ب اب ا) (ب اب (You give to the neighbor whose door is nearest to you) ح د ث ن ا ح ج ا ج ب ن م ن ه ال ق ال : ح د ث ن ا شع ب ة ق ال : أ خ ب ر ن ي أ بو ع م ر ا ن ق ال : س م ع ت ط ل ح ة ع ن ع ائ ش ة ( Hadith: said, ('A'isha said, I" (.ق ال ت : قل ت : ي ا ر سول هللا إ ن ل ي ج ار ي ن ف إ ل ى أ يه م ا أه د ي ق ال : إ ل ى أ ق ر ب ه م ا م ن ك ب اب ا 'Messenger of Allah, I have two neighbours. To whom should I give my gifts?' He replied, 'To the one whose door is nearer to you.'") Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 107 Which neighbor has priority? The one whose door is closest to you and this gives you so much information that no one can say, I don t know, subhan Allah. Chapter 59: ( اال د ن ى ف االد ن ى م ن ال ج ير ان (ب اب (The nearest and then next nearest neighbour) ح د ث ن ا ال حس ي ن ب ن حر ي ث ق ال : ح د ث ن ا ال ف ض ل ب ن موس ى ع ن ال و ل ي د ب ن د ين ار ع ن ال ح س ن أ ن ه سئ ل ع ن ( Hadith: (Al-Hasan was (. ال ج ار ف ق ال : أ ر ب ع ين د ار ا أ م ام ه و أ ر ب ع ي ن خ ل ف ه و أ ر ب ع ي ن ع ن ي م ين ه و أ ر ب ع ي ن ع ن ي س ار ه asked about the neighbour and said, "The term 'neighbour' includes the forty houses in front a person, the forty houses behind him, the forty houses on his right and the forty houses on his left.") Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 109 The definition of a neighborhood is 40 homes to the right, 40 homes to the left, 40 to the front, and 40 from the back. All of these are your neighbors, subhan Allah. Chapter 60: ( م ن أ غ ل ق ال ب اب ع ل ى ال ج ار (ب اب (The person who shuts his door against his neighbour) ح د ث ن ا م ال ك ب ن إ س م اع يل ق ال : ح د ث ن ا ع ب د الس ال م ع ن ل ي ث ع ن ن اف ع ع ن اب ن عم ر ق ال : ل ق د أ ت ى ع ل ي ن ا ( Hadith: ز م ان أ و ق ال : ح ين و م ا أ ح د أ ح ق ب د ين ار ه و د ر ه م ه م ن أ خ ي ه ال مس ل م ث م ا ل ن الدين ا ر و الدر ه م أ ح ب إ ل ى أ ح د ن ا م ن أ خ يه ال مس ل م س م ع ت الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم ي قول: ك م م ن ج ا ر مت ع لق ب ج ار ه ي و م ال ق ي ام ة ي قول: ي ا ر ب ه ذ ا (Ibn 'Umar said, "There was a time when no one was more.) أ غ ل ق ب اب ه دون ي ف م ن ع م ع روف ه Page 5
entitled to a person's money than his Muslim brother. Now people love their dirhams and dinars more than their Muslim brother. I heard the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, 'How many a neighbour will be brought together with his neighbour on the Day of Rising! He will say, "Lord, this man closed his door to me and refused to show me common kindness!"'") Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 111 In the hadith, people before used to think of others before money, but now they think of money before others, subhan Allah. The neighbor will come on the Day of Judgement and say, I came to my neighbor, but he closed the door in my face. Maybe in the duniya he will not say anything, but on the Day of Judgement he will come asking for his rights, subhan Allah. Similar to how the rahm will come on the Day of Judgement asking for its rights. May Allah (swt) help us fulfill the rights to our parents, relatives, children and neighbors. Ameen. Page 6
