1 33 Surah Ahzab Arabic text and English translation Jordan Aal Bait In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful: [33:1] O Prophet! Fear Allah and do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites. Truly Allah is Knower, Wise. [33:2] And follow what is revealed to you from your Lord. Truly Allah is Aware of what you do. [33:3] And put your trust in Allah, and Allah suffices as Guardian. [33:4] Allah has not placed two hearts inside any breast [of any man], nor has He made your wives whom you repudiate by zihār your mothers. Nor has He made those whom you claim as [adopted] sons your sons. That is a mere utterance of your mouths. But Allah speaks the Truth and He guides to the way. [33:5] [call them by] Attribute them to their [true] fathers. That is more equitable in the sight of Allah. If you do not know their [true] fathers, then they are your brethren in religion and [as] your associates. And you would not be at fault for any mistake you make, except what your hearts may premeditate. And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. [33:6] The Prophet is closer to the believers than their [own] souls, and his wives are their mothers. And those related by blood are more entitled, [from] one another in the Book of Allah than the [other] believers and the Emigrants, barring/ except any favour you may do your friends. This is written in the Book. [33:7] And when We took a pledge from the prophets and from you, and from Noah and Abraham and Moses and Jesus son of Mary. 2 [33:9] O you who believe! Remember Allah s favour to you when hosts came against you, and We unleashed against them a [great] wind and hosts you did not see. And Allah is ever Seer of what you do. [33:10] When they came at you from above you and from below you, and when the eyes turned away [in fear], and the hearts leapt to the throats, while you entertained all sorts of thoughts concerning Allah, [33:11] it was there that the believers were [sorely] tried, and were shaken with a mighty shock. [33:12] And when the hypocrites, and those in whose hearts is sickness were saying, What Allah and His Messenger promised us was [nothing] but delusion. [33:13] And when a party of them said, O people of Yathrib! there is not a stand [possible] for you [here], so turn back. And a group of them [even] sought the permission of the Prophet, saying, Our homes are exposed, although they were not exposed. They only sought to flee. [33:14] And had they been invaded in it from all sides and then had they been exhorted to treachery, they would have committed it and would have hesitated thereupon but a little. [33:15] Though they had assuredly pledged to Allah before that, that they would not turn their backs [to flee]; and a pledge given to Allah must be answered for. [33:16] Say: Flight will not avail you should you flee from death or [from] being slain, and then you would not be extended comfort, except a little. [33:17] Say: Who is it that can protect you from Allah should He desire [to cause] you ill, or should He desire for you mercy? 3 [33:18] Indeed Allah already knows the hinderers among you and those who say to their brethren, Come to us, and they do not engage in the battle except a little, [33:19] grudging to you. And when there is a panic, you see them looking at you, their eyes rolling like one fainting at death, but when the panic subsides, they scald you, with [their] sharp tongues, in their greed for the riches. Those, they never believed. Therefore Allah has invalidated their works, and that for Allah is easy. [33:20] They suppose that the confederates have not [yet] departed, and were the confederates to come, they would wish that they were in the desert with the Bedouins asking about your news. And if they were among you, they would fight but a little. [33:21] Verily there is for you in the Messenger of Allah a good example [uswatun hasanatun] for whoever hopes for [the encounter with] Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah often. [33:22] And when the believers saw the confederates, they said, This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us, and Allah and His Messenger were truthful. And that only increased them in faith and submission. [33:23] Among the believers are men who are true to the covenant they made with Allah. Some of them have fulfilled their vow, and some are still awaiting; and they have not changed in the least; [33:24] that Allah may reward the truthful for their truthfulness and chastise the hypocrites, if He will, or relent to them. 4 [33:25] And Allah repulsed those who were disbelievers in their rage, without their attaining any good. And Allah spared the believers from fighting. And truly Allah is Strong, Mighty. [33:26] And He brought down those of the People of the Scripture, who had supported them from their strongholds and He cast terror into their hearts, [so that] some you slew and some you took captive. [33:27] And He made you inherit their land and their homes and their possessions, and a land you had not trodden. And Allah has power over all things. [Addressing the Prophet to tell his wives wives to choose (28-29), addressing women of the Prophet family members and believing men and women] 30-35: conditions (If, then ) [33:28] O Prophet! Say to your wives: If you desire the life of this world and its adornment, come [now], I will provide for you and release you in a gracious manner. [33:29] But if you desire Allah and His Messenger and the Abode of the Hereafter, then Allah has indeed prepared for the virtuous among you, a great reward. [33:30] O wives of the Prophet! Whoever of you commits manifest indecency the chastisement shall be doubled for her, and that is easy for Allah. [33:31] But whoever of you is obedient to Allah and His Messenger, and acts righteously, We shall give her a twofold reward. And We have prepared a noble provision for her. [33:32] O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other women. If you fear [Allah], then do not be complaisant in your speech, lest he in whose heart is a sickness aspire [to you], but speak honourable words. و ر د للا ال ذ ين ك ف ر وا ب غ ي ظ ه م ل م ي ن ال وا خ ي ر ا و ك ف ى للا ال م ؤ م ن ين ال ق ت ال و ك ان للا ق و ي ا ع ز يز ا }25{ و أ ن ز ل ال ذ ين ظ اه ر وه م م ن أ ه ل ال ك ت اب م ن ص ي اص يه م و ق ذ ف ف ي ق ل وب ه م الر ع ب ف ر يق ا ت ق ت ل ون و ت أ س ر ون ف ر يق ا }26{ و أ و ر ث ك م أ ر ض ه م و د ي ار ه م و أ م و ال ه م و أ ر ض ا ل م ت ط ئ وه ا و ك ان للا ع ل ى ك ل ش ي ء ق د ير ا }27{ ي ا أ ي ه ا الن ب ي ق ل ل ز و اج ك إ ن ك ن ت ن ت ر د ن ال ح ي اة الد ن ي ا و ز ين ت ه ا ف ت ع ال ي ن أ م ت ع ك ن و أ س ر ح ك ن س ر اح ا ج م يل }28{ و إ ن ك ن ت ن ت ر د ن للا و ر س ول ه و الد ار ا ل خ ر ة ف إ ن للا أ ع د ل ل م ح س ن ات م ن ك ن أ ج ر ا ع ظ يم ا }29{ ي ا ن س اء الن ب ي م ن ي أ ت م ن ك ن ب ف اح ش ة م ب ي ن ة ي ض اع ف ل ه ا ال ع ذ اب ض ع ف ي ن و ك ان ذ ل ك ع ل ى للا ي س ير ا }30{ و م ن ي ق ن ت م ن ك ن لل و ر س ول ه و ت ع م ل ص ال ح ا ن ؤ ت ه ا أ ج ر ه ا م ر ت ي ن و أ ع ت د ن ا ل ه ا ر ز ق ا ك ر يم ا }31{ ي ا ن س اء الن ب ي ل س ت ن ك أ ح د م ن الن س اء إ ن ات ق ي ت ن ف ل ت خ ض ع ن ب ال ق و ل ف ي ط م ع ال ذ ي ف ي ق ل ب ه م ر ض و ق ل ن ق و ل م ع ر وف ا }32{

5 [33:33] And stay in your houses and do not flaunt your finery in the [flaunting] manner of the former Time of Ignorance. And maintain prayer and pay the alms, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Indeed Allah will but to rid you of sin, People of the House, and to purify you with a thorough purification. [33:34] And remember that which is recited in your houses of the revelations of Allah and wisdom. Truly Allah is Kind, Aware. [33:35] Indeed the men who have submitted [to Allah] and the women who have submitted [to Allah], and the men who believed and the women who believed, and the obedient men and the obedient women, and the men who are truthful and the women who are truthful, and the men who are patient and the women who are patient, and the men who are humble and the women are humble, and the charitable men and the charitable women, and the men who fast and the women who fast, and the men who guard their private parts and the women who guard their private parts, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who remember Allah often for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward. [33:36] And it is not [fitting] for any believing man or believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided on a matter, to have a choice in their matter. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly strayed into manifest error. Divorce of Zaid bin Harithah (RA) and Zainab bint Jahsh (RA) and Zainab (RA) s Marriage with the Prophet [33:37] And when you said to him to whom Allah had shown favour, and to whom you [too] had shown favour. Retain your wife for yourself and fear Allah. But you hid in your heart what Allah was to disclose, and you feared people, though Allah is worthier that you should fear Him. So when Zayd had fulfilled whatever need he had of her, We joined her in marriage to you so that there may not be any restriction for the believers in respect of the wives of their adopted sons, when the latter have fulfilled whatever wish they have of them. And Allah s commandment is bound to be realised. و ق ر ن ف ي ب ي وت ك ن و ل ت ب ر ج ن ت ب ر ج ال ج اه ل ي ة ا ل ول ى و أ ق م ن الص ل ة و آت ين الز ك اة و أ ط ع ن للا و ر س ول ه إ ن م ا ي ر يد للا ل ي ذ ه ب ع ن ك م الر ج س أ ه ل ال ب ي ت و ي ط ه ر ك م ت ط ه ير ا }33{ و اذ ك ر ن م ا ي ت ل ى ف ي ب ي وت ك ن م ن آي ات للا و ال ح ك م ة إ ن للا ك ان ل ط يف ا خ ب ير ا }34{ إ ن ال م س ل م ين و ال م س ل م ات و ال م ؤ م ن ين و ال م ؤ م ن ات و ال ق ان ت ين و ال ق ان ت ات و الص اد ق ين و الص اد ق ات و الص اب ر ين و الص اب ر ات و ال خ اش ع ين و ال خ اش ع ا ت و ال م ت ص د ق ين و ال م ت ص د ق ات و الص ائ م ين و الص ائ م ات و ال ح اف ظ ين ف ر وج ه م و ال ح اف ظ ات و الذ اك ر ين للا ك ث ير ا و الذ اك ر ات أ ع د للا ل ه م م غ ف ر ة و أ ج ر ا ع ظ يم ا }35{ و م ا ك ان ل م ؤ م ن و ل م ؤ م ن ة إ ذ ا ق ض ى للا و ر س ول ه أ م ر ا أ ن ي ك ون ل ه م ال خ ي ر ة م ن أ م ر ه م و م ن ي ع ص للا و ر س ول ه ف ق د ض ل ض ل ل م ب ين ا }36{ و إ ذ ت ق ول ل ل ذ ي أ ن ع م للا ع ل ي ه و أ ن ع م ت ع ل ي ه أ م س ك ع ل ي ك ز و ج ك و ات ق للا و ت خ ف ي ف ي ن ف س ك م ا للا م ب د يه و ت خ ش ى الن اس و للا أ ح ق أ ن ت خ ش اه ف ل م ا ق ض ى ز ي د م ن ه ا و ط ر ا ز و ج ن اك ه ا ل ك ي ل ي ك ون ع ل ى ال م ؤ م ن ين ح ر ج ف ي أ ز و اج أ د ع ي ائ ه م إ ذ ا ق ض و ا م ن ه ن و ط ر ا و ك ان أ م ر للا م ف ع و ل }37{

6 Special Permission for the Prophet with regard to number of wives and division of resources or time/ wahbah [33:38] There is no restriction for the Prophet in what Allah has ordained for him: [that is] Allah s precedent with those who passed away before, and Allah s commandment, is inexorable destiny [33:39] [those] who deliver the Messages of Allah and fear Him, and fear no one except Him. And Allah suffices as Reckoner. [33:40] Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets. And Allah has knowledge of all things. [33:41] O you who believe! Remember Allah with much remembrance. [33:42] And glorify Him morning and evening. [33:43] It is He Who blesses you and His angels that He may bring you forth from darkness into light. And He is Merciful to the believers. [33:44] Their greeting on the day they encounter Him will be Peace. And He has prepared for them a noble reward. [33:45] O Prophet! Indeed We have sent you as a witness, and as a bearer of good tidings, and as a warner, [33:46] and as a summoner to Allah by His leave, and as an illuminating lamp. [33:47] And give good tidings to the believers that there will be for them a great bounty from Allah. [33:48] And do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and disregard their injuriousness. And put your trust in Allah, and Allah suffices as Guardian. [33:49] O you who believe if you marry believing women and then divorce them before you have touched them, there shall be no [waiting] period for you to reckon against them. But provide for them and release them in a gracious manner. م ا ك ان ع ل ى الن ب ي م ن ح ر ج ف يم ا ف ر ض للا ل ه س ن ة للا ف ي ال ذ ين خ ل و ا م ن ق ب ل و ك ان أ م ر للا ق د ر ا م ق د ور ا }38{ ال ذ ين ي ب ل غ ون ر س ا ل ت للا و ي خ ش و ن ه و ل ي خ ش و ن أ ح د ا إ ل للا و ك ف ى ب ا لل ح س يب ا }39{ م ا ك ان م ح م د أ ب ا أ ح د م ن ر ج ال ك م و ل ك ن ر س ول للا و خ ات م الن ب ي ين و ك ان للا ب ك ل ش ي ء ع ل يم ا }40{ ي ا أ ي ه ا ال ذ ين آم ن وا اذ ك ر وا للا ذ ك ر ا ك ث ير ا }41{ و س ب ح وه ب ك ر ة و أ ص يل }42{ ه و ال ذ ي ي ص ل ي ع ل ي ك م و م ل ئ ك ت ه ل ي خ ر ج ك م م ن الظ ل م ات إ ل ى الن ور و ك ا ن ب ال م ؤ م ن ين ر ح يم ا }43{ ت ح ي ت ه م ي و م ي ل ق و ن ه س ل م و أ ع د ل ه م أ ج ر ا ك ر يم ا }44{ ي ا أ ي ه ا الن ب ي إ ن ا أ ر س ل ن اك ش اه د ا و م ب ش ر ا و ن ذ ير ا }45{ و د اع ي ا إ ل ى للا ب إ ذ ن ه و س ر اج ا م ن ير ا }46{ و ب ش ر ال م ؤ م ن ين ب أ ن ل ه م م ن للا ف ض ل ك ب ير ا }47{ و ل ت ط ع ال ك اف ر ين و ال م ن اف ق ين و د ع أ ذ اه م و ت و ك ل ع ل ى للا و ك ف ى ب ا لل و ك يل }48{ ي ا أ ي ه ا ال ذ ين آم ن وا إ ذ ا ن ك ح ت م ال م ؤ م ن ات ث م ط ل ق ت م وه ن م ن ق ب ل أ ن ت م س وه ن ف م ا ل ك م ع ل ي ه ن م ن ع د ة ت ع ت د ون ه ا ف م ت ع وه ن و س ر ح وه ن س ر اح ا ج م يل }49{

7 [33:50] O Prophet! Indeed We have made lawful for you your wives whom you have given their dowries and what your right hand owns, of those whom Allah has given you as spoils of war, and the daughters of your paternal uncles and the daughters of your paternal aunts, and the daughters of your maternal uncles and the daughters of your maternal aunts who emigrated with you, and any believing woman if she gift herself [in marriage] to the Prophet and if the Prophet desire to take her in marriage a privilege for you exclusively, not for the [rest of the] believers. Indeed We know what We have imposed upon them with respect to their wives, and what their right hands own, so that there may be no [unnecessary] restriction for you. And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. [33:51] You may put off whomever of them you wish and consort whomever you wish, and as for whomever you may desire of those whom you have set aside, you would not be at fault. That makes it likelier that they will be comforted and not grieve, and that they will be satisfied with what you give them, every one of them will be well-pleased with what you give her. And Allah knows what is in your hearts. And Allah is Knower, Forbearing. [33:52] Women are not lawful for you beyond that, nor [is it lawful] for you to change them for other wives, even though their beauty impress you, except those whom your right hand owns. And Allah is Watcher over all things. [33:53] O you who believe, do not enter the Prophet s houses unless permission is granted you to [share] a meal without waiting for the [right] moment. But when you are invited, enter, and, when you have had your meal, disperse, without any [leisurely] conversation. Indeed that is upsetting for the Prophet, and he is [too] shy of you, but Allah is not shy of the truth. And when you ask anything of [his] womenfolk, ask them from behind a screen. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts. And you should never cause the Messenger of Allah hurt; nor ever marry his wives after him. Assuredly that in Allah s sight would be very grave. ي ا أ ي ه ا الن ب ي إ ن ا أ ح ل ل ن ا ل ك أ ز و اج ك الل ت ي آت ي ت أ ج ور ه ن و م ا م ل ك ت ي م ين ك م م ا أ ف ا ء للا ع ل ي ك و ب ن ات ع م ك و ب ن ات ع م ات ك و ب ن ات خ ال ك و ب ن ات خ ا ل ت ك الل ت ي ه اج ر ن م ع ك و ام ر أ ة م ؤ م ن ة إ ن و ه ب ت ن ف س ه ا ل لن ب ي إ ن أ ر اد الن ب ي أ ن ي س ت ن ك ح ه ا خ ال ص ة ل ك م ن د ون ال م ؤ م ن ين ق د ع ل م ن ا م ا ف ر ض ن ا ع ل ي ه م ف ي أ ز و اج ه م و م ا م ل ك ت أ ي م ان ه م ل ك ي ل ي ك ون ع ل ي ك ح ر ج و ك ان للا غ ف ور ا ر ح يم ا }50{ ت ر ج ي م ن ت ش اء م ن ه ن و ت ؤ و ي إ ل ي ك م ن ت ش اء و م ن اب ت غ ي ت م م ن ع ز ل ت ف ل ج ن اح ع ل ي ك ذ ل ك أ د ن ى أ ن ت ق ر أ ع ي ن ه ن و ل ي ح ز ن و ي ر ض ي ن ب م ا آت ي ت ه ن ك ل ه ن و للا ي ع ل م م ا ف ي ق ل وب ك م و ك ان للا ع ل يم ا ح ل يم ا} 51 { ل ي ح ل ل ك الن س اء م ن ب ع د و ل أ ن ت ب د ل ب ه ن م ن أ ز و اج و ل و أ ع ج ب ك ح س ن ه ن إ ل م ا م ل ك ت ي م ين ك و ك ان للا ع ل ى ك ل ش ي ء ر ق يب ا }52{ ي ا أ ي ه ا ال ذ ين آم ن وا ل ت د خ ل وا ب ي وت الن ب ي إ ل أ ن ي ؤ ذ ن ل ك م إ ل ى ط ع ام غ ي ر ن اظ ر ين إ ن اه و ل ك ن إ ذ ا د ع يت م ف اد خ ل وا ف إ ذ ا ط ع م ت م ف ان ت ش ر وا و ل م س ت أ ن س ين ل ح د يث إ ن ذ ل ك م ك ان ي ؤ ذ ي الن ب ي ف ي س ت ح ي ي م ن ك م و للا ل ي س ت ح ي ي م ن ال ح ق و إ ذ ا س أ ل ت م وه ن م ت اع ا ف اس أ ل وه ن م ن و ر اء ح ج اب ذ ل ك م أ ط ه ر ل ق ل وب ك م و ق ل وب ه ن و م ا ك ان ل ك م أ ن ت ؤ ذ وا ر س ول للا و ل أ ن ت ن ك ح وا أ ز و اج ه م ن ب ع د ه أ ب د ا إ ن ذ ل ك م ك ان ع ن د للا ع ظ يم ا }53{

8 [33:54] Whether you disclose anything or keep it hidden, truly Allah has knowledge of all things. [33:55] They [the Prophet s wives] would not be at fault with regard to [socialising with] their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their brothers sons, or their sisters sons, or their own women, or what their right hands own. And fear [O women] Allah. Surely Allah is Witness to all things. [33:56] Indeed Allah and His angels bless the Prophet. O you who believe, invoke blessings on him and invoke peace upon him in a worthy manner. [33:57] Indeed those who are injurious to Allah and His Messenger, Allah has cursed them in this world and the Hereafter, and has prepared for them a humiliating chastisement. [33:58] And those who cause hurt to believing men and believing women without the latter s having done anything, have verily borne [the guilt of] calumny and [the burden of] manifest sin. [33:59] O Prophet! Tell your wives and daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks closely over themselves. That makes it likelier that they will be known and not be molested. And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. [33:60] If the hypocrites do not desist, and likewise those in whose hearts is a sickness, as well as the scaremongers in the city, assuredly We will urge you [to take action] against them, then they will not be your neighbours in it except for a little [while]. [33:61] Accursed [shall they be], wherever they are found they shall be seized and slain violently. [33:62] Allah s precedent with those who passed away before, and you will find that there is no changing Allah s precedent. إ ن ت ب د وا ش ي ئ ا أ و ت خ ف وه ف إ ن للا ك ان ب ك ل ش ي ء ع ل يم ا }54{ ل ج ن اح ع ل ي ه ن ف ي آب ائ ه ن و ل أ ب ن ائ ه ن و ل إ خ و ان ه ن و ل أ ب ن اء إ خ و ان ه ن و ل أ ب ن ا ء أ خ و ات ه ن و ل ن س ائ ه ن و ل م ا م ل ك ت أ ي م ان ه ن و ات ق ين للا إ ن للا ك ان ع ل ى ك ل ش ي ء ش ه يد ا }55{ إ ن للا و م ل ئ ك ت ه ي ص ل ون ع ل ى الن ب ي ي ا أ ي ه ا ال ذ ين آم ن وا ص ل وا ع ل ي ه و س ل م وا ت س ل يم ا }56{ إ ن ال ذ ين ي ؤ ذ ون للا و ر س ول ه ل ع ن ه م للا ف ي الد ن ي ا و ا ل خ ر ة و أ ع د ل ه م ع ذ اب ا م ه ين ا }57{ و ال ذ ين ي ؤ ذ ون ال م ؤ م ن ين و ال م ؤ م ن ات ب غ ي ر م ا اك ت س ب وا ف ق د اح ت م ل وا ب ه ت ان ا و إ ث م ا م ب ين ا }58{ ي ا أ ي ه ا الن ب ي ق ل ل ز و اج ك و ب ن ات ك و ن س اء ال م ؤ م ن ين ي د ن ين ع ل ي ه ن م ن ج ل ب يب ه ن ذ ل ك أ د ن ى أ ن ي ع ر ف ن ف ل ي ؤ ذ ي ن و ك ان للا غ ف ور ا ر ح يم ا} 59 { ل ئ ن ل م ي ن ت ه ال م ن اف ق ون و ال ذ ين ف ي ق ل وب ه م م ر ض و ال م ر ج ف ون ف ي ال م د ين ة ل ن غ ر ي ن ك ب ه م ث م ل ي ج او ر ون ك ف يه ا إ ل ق ل يل }60{ م ل ع ون ين أ ي ن م ا ث ق ف وا أ خ ذ وا و ق ت ل وا ت ق ت يل }61{ س ن ة للا ف ي ال ذ ين خ ل و ا م ن ق ب ل و ل ن ت ج د ل س ن ة للا ت ب د يل }62{

9 [33:63] People question you concerning the Hour. Say: Knowledge thereof lies only with Allah and what do you know, perhaps the Hour is near. [33:64] Allah has indeed cursed the disbelievers, and prepared for them a blaze [33:65] to abide therein forever. They shall not find any protector or helper. [33:66] On the day when their faces are turned about in the Fire they shall say, O would that we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger! [33:67] And they shall say, Our Lord, we obeyed our leaders and elders, and they led us astray from the way. [33:68] Our Lord, give them a double chastisement and curse them with numerous curses! [33:69] O you who believe, do not behave as did those who harmed Moses, whereat Allah absolved him of what they alleged. And he was distinguished in Allah s sight. [33:70] O you who believe, fear Allah and speak words of integrity. [33:71] He will rectify your deeds for you and will forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has verily achieved a great success. [33:72] Indeed We offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, but they refused to bear it and were apprehensive of it; but man undertook it. Truly he is a wrongdoer, ignorant [33:73] so that Allah may chastise the hypocrite men and hypocrite women, and the idolater men and idolater women, and that Allah may relent to the believing men and believing women.
