He said: So I said: What do you say about the one who disassociates from them? 1303 My father narrated to me, from Muhammad ibn Fudayl, from Sālim i.e. ibn Abū Hafsah who said: I asked Abū Ja far and Ja far about Abū Bakr and Umar (radiallāhu anhumā) so they both said: O Sālim, have walā to them and disassociate from their enemies, because they were verily both leaders of guidance. And Ja far said to me: O Sālim, Abū Bakr is my grandfather. Does a man curse at his grandfather? He said: And he said to me: I would not benefit from the intercession of Muhammad (sallallāhu alayhi wa sallam) on the Day of Resurrection if I did not have walā to them and disassociate from their enemies. ح هدثػ ن ا ي ي ب ن أ ي وب إ م ل ء س ن ة ث ل ث ني و م ائػ تػ ني ان أ ب و ح ف ص ا ل ه بر ح هدث ن ش ي خ م ن قػ ر ي ش ع ن ال هشع ب ق اؿ :»أ ر ج ئ - 0215 ا ل م ور إ ل ا ه لل تػ ع ا ل و ل ت ك ن م ر ج ئ ا و أ م ر ب ل ع ر وؼ و ان و ع ن ال ن ك ر و ل ت ك ن ح ر ور ا ي و اع ل م أ هف ا ل يػ ر و ال هشه ر م ن ا ه لل و ل ت ك ن ق د ر ا ي«ق اؿ ي ي ب ن أ ي وب : ف ح هدث ن ر ج ل ك اف إ ل ج ن ب ا ل ه بر أ هف ال هشع ب ه ق اؿ : م ع ى ذ ا و أ ح هب ص ل ح ب ن ى اش م و ل ت ك ن ش يع ياا " 1306 Yahyā ibn Ayyūb narrated to me dictating in the year 230 hijrī from Abū Hafs Al-Abbār (who said): An elderly man from Quraysh narrated to me from Ash-Sha bī who said: Defer the issues to Allāh the Exalted and do not be a murjī. Order towards the good and forbid the evil, and do not be a harūrī (khārijī). And know that all good and bad is from Allāh, and do not be a qadarī. Yahyā ibn Ayyūb said: Then a man who was next to Al-Abbār narrated to me that Ash-Sha bī said: Along with this, then love the righteous from Banū Hāshim, and do not be a shī ī. ح هدث ن ع ث اف ب ن م ه د ب ن أ ب ش يػ ب ة ان ش ر يك أ و ر ج ل ع ن ش ر يك ش هك أ ب و ع ب د اله ر ح ن ع ن ا ل ع ش ع ن س ا ل أ هف - 0216 أ س ق ف ن ر اف ج اء إ ل ع ل ي ر ض ي ا ه لل ع ن و فػ ق اؿ : ي أ م ري ال ؤ م ن ني أ ن ش د ؾ ك ت اب ك ب ي ين ك و ش ف اع ت ك ب ل س ان ك و ك اف ع ر أ خ ر ج م م ن أ ر ض م أ ر ج ع ن ا إ ل أ ر ض ن ا ق اؿ :» ل إ هف ع ر ر ض ي ا ه لل ع ن و ك اف ر ش يد ا ل م ر «1307 Uthmān ibn Muhammad ibn Abū Shaybah narrated to me, from Sharīk or a man from Sharīk Abū Abdur-Rahmān was in doubt from Al-A mash, from Sālim: That the bishop of Najrān came to Alī (radiallāhu anhu) and said: O Amīr Al-Muminīn, I ask you by the Book in your right hand, and your intercession with your tongue and Umar had exiled them from their lands to let us return to our lands. heard Alī (radiallāhu anhu) say: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (sallallāhu alayhi wa sallam) say: Talhah and Az-Zubayr are my two neighbors in Paradise. - 0201 ح هدثػ ن ا أ ب و ص ال ح ى د يهة ب ن ع ب د ال و هىاب ب هكة ان أ ح د ب ن ي ون س ان م ه د ب ن ط ل ح ة ع ن أ ب ع بػ ي د ة ب ن ا ل ك م ع ن ا ل ك م ب ن ج ح ل ق اؿ : س ع ت ع ل ياا ر ض ي ا ه لل ع ن و يػ ق وؿ :» ل يػ ف ض ل ن أ ح د ع ل ى أ ب ب ك ر و ع ر ر ض ي ا ه لل ع نػ ا إ ه ل ج ل د ت و ح هد ال ف ت ي«1312 Abū Sālih Hadiyyah ibn Abdul-Wahhāb narrated to us in Makkah, from Ahmad ibn Yūnus, from Muhammad ibn Talhah, from Abū Ubaydah ibn Al-Hakam, from Al- Hakam ibn Jahl who said: I heard Alī (radiallāhu anhu) say: No-one prefers me over Abū Bakr and Umar (radiallāhu anhumā) except that I will whip him with the punishment of the one who invents a lie. - 0204 ح هدث ن أ ب و ع بػ ي د ا ه لل ب ن ع ر ال ق و ار ي ر ي و ى ذ ا ل ف ظ ح د يث أ ب ق ا ل : ح هدثػ ن ا ي ي ب ن ح هاد أ ب و ب ك ر ان أ ب و ع و ان ة ع ن خ ال د ا ل هذاء ع ن ع ب د اله ر ح ن ب ن أ ب ب ك ر ة أ هف ع ل ياا ر ض ي ا ه لل ع ن و أ ت ى م ع ائ د ا و م ع و ع ه ار ف ذ ك ر ش يػ ئ ا فػ ق اؿ ع ه ار ي أ م ري ال ؤ م ن ني. فػ ق اؿ : " «م ا ل ق ي أ ح د م ن ى ذ ه ا ل همة م ا ل ق يت إ هف ر س وؿ ا ه لل ص لهى هللا ع ل ي و و س لهم تػ و ف ه لل ل ك ون هن م ع ا ه لل ع ل ى م ن ك اف ث ه ق اؿ : ف ذ ك ر اس ك ت فػ و ا أ ب و ب ك ر و ذ ك ر ك ل ة ف اس ت خ ذ ل ك ل ف ع ر ر ض ي ا ه لل ع ن و ف ذ ك ر ش يػ ئ ا فػ ب اي ع النهاس أ ب ب ك ر ر ض ي ا ه لل ع ن و فػ ب ايػ ع ت و س له ت و ر ض يت ث ه تػ و ف إ ل ا ه لل ع ن و فػ ب ايػ ع ت و س له ت و ر ض يت فػ ب ايػ ع ت و س له ت و ر ض يت ث ه تػ و ف ع ر ف ج ع ل ا ل م ر ى ؤ ل ء اله رى الس تهة فػ ب اي ع النهاس ع ث اف ر ض ي ث ه ى م ال يػ و ي يل وف بػ ي ن و بػ ني م ع او ي ة «1315 My father and Abu Ubayd-Allāh ibn Umar Al-Qawārīrī both narrated to me and these are the words of the hadīth of my father they both said: Yahyā ibn Hammād Abū Bakr narrated to us, from Abu Awānah, from Khālid Al-Hadhdhā, from Abdur-Rahmān ibn Abū Bakrah (who said): That Alī (radiallāhu anhu) came to them to visit and with him was Ammār. Then he mentioned something, so Ammār said: O Amīr Al-Muminīn. So he said: Be quiet. Because by Allāh, I will verily be with Allāh against those who were. Then he said: Nobody from this Ummah has gone through what I have been through. Verily the Messenger of Allāh (sallallāhu alayhi wa sallam) passed away and then he mentioned something and then the people pledged allegiance to Abū Bakr (radiallāhu anhu), and I (also) pledged allegiance, submitted and was pleased. Then Abū Bakr passed away and he mentioned some words and he appointed Umar (radiallāhu anhu) as a successor and he mentioned that and I pledged allegiance, submitted and was pleased. Then Umar passed away and he made the affair (i.e. the decision) between this group of six people, and the people pledged allegiance to Uthmān (radiallāhu anhu), and I (also) pledged allegiance, submitted and was pleased. Then they (i.e. the Muslims) today are leaning between me and Mu āwiyah. 4
ر ض ي ا ه لل ع ن و»س ب ق ر س وؿ ق اؿ : ق اؿ ع ل ر ي - 0207 ح هدثػ ن ا إ س اع يل أ ب و م ع ر ان و ك يع ان س ف ي اف ع ن أ ب ى اش م ع ن قػ ي س ا ل ار ف ا ه لل ص لهى هللا ع ل ي و و س لهم و ثػ ه ن أ ب و ب ك ر و ثػ لهث ع ر ث ه خ ب ط تػ ن ا ف تػ ن ة ف ا ش اء ا ه لل «1318 Ismā īl Abū Ma mar narrated to us, from Wakī, from Sufyān, from Abū Hāshim, from Qays Al-Khāriqī who said: Alī (radiallāhu anhu) said: The Messenger of Allāh (sallallāhu alayhi wa sallam) came first, and Abū Bakr came second, and Umar came third. Then we were struck by fitnah, so whatever Allāh wants. - 0208 ح هدث ن أ ب ان أ ب و ب د ر ش ج اع ب ن ال و ل يد ق اؿ : ذ ك ر خ ل ف ب ن ح و ش ب ع ن أ ب إ س ح اؽ ع ن ع ب د خ ري ع ن ع ل ي ر ض ي ا ه لل ع ن و ق اؿ : س ب ق ر س وؿ ا ه لل ص لهى هللا ع ل ي و و س لهم و ص لهى أ ب و ب ك ر و ثػ لهث ع ر ث ه خ ب ط تػ ن ا أ و أ ص ابػ تػ ن ا ف تػ ن ة يػ ع ف و ا ه لل ع ه ن ي ش اء " 1319 My father narrated to me, from Abū Badr Shujā ibn Al-Walīd who said: Khalaf ibn Hawshab mentioned, from Abū Ishāq, from Abdi Khayr, from Alī (radiallāhu anhu) who said: The Messenger of Allāh (sallallāhu alayhi wa sallam) came first, Abū Bakr prayed, then Umar came third, then we were struck or befallen by a fitnah. Allāh pardons whomever He wants. - ح هدث ن إ س اع يل أ ب و م ع ر ان أ ب و أ س ام ة ان أ ب و ك د يػ ن ة ع ن م ط ر ؼ ع ن ال هشع ب ع ن م س ر وؽ ق اؿ : س ع ت ع ل ه ي ب ن أ ب 0210 ط ال ب ر ض ي ا ه لل ع ن و يػ ق وؿ ف ش ي ء : ص د ؽ ا ه لل و ر س ول و. قػ ل ت ى ذ ا ش ي ء س ع ت و م ن ر س وؿ ا ه لل ص لهى هللا ع ل ي و و س لهم ق اؿ :»ا ل ر ب خ د ع ة «1321 Ismā īl Abū Ma mar narrated to me, from Abū Usamah, from Abū Kadaynah, from Mutarrif, from Ash-Sha bī, from Masrūq who said: I heard Alī (radiallāhu anhu) say about something: Allāh and His Messenger have spoken the truth. I said: Is that something you have heard from the Messenger of Allāh (sallallāhu alayhi wa sallam)? He said: War is deception. - 0214 ح هدث ن أ ب و ك ر ي ب م ه د ب ن ال ع ل ء ا ل د ا ن ان م ه د ب ن ا ل س ن ا ل س د ي ان ى ار وف ب ن ص ال ح ا ل د ا ن ع ن ا ل ار ث ب ن ع ب د اله ر ح ن ع ن أ ب ا ل ل س ق اؿ : س ع ت ع ل ياا ر ض ي ا ه لل ع ن و يػ ق وؿ ل ع ب د ا ه لل ب ن س ب أ : و يػ ل ك م ا أ ف ض ى إ ل ه ر س وؿ ا ه لل ص له ى هللا ع ل ي و و س له م ش يػ ئ ا ك ت و أ ح د ا م ن النهاس و ل ق د س ع ت و يػ ق وؿ :»إ هف بػ ني ي د ي ال هساع ة ث ل ث ني ك هذا ب«و إ نهك ل ح د ى م 1325 Abū Kurayb Muhammad ibn Al- Alā Al-Hamdānī narrated to me, from Muhammad ibn Al-Hasan Al-Asadī, from Hārūn ibn Sālih Al-Hamdānī, from Al-Hārith ibn Abdur-Rahmān, from Abū Al-Julās who said: I heard Alī (radiallāhu anhu) say to Abdullāh ibn Saba 4 : Woe to you. The Messenger of Allāh (sallallāhu alayhi wa sallam) did not disclose anything to me, which he hid for anyone among the people. And I verily heard him say: Verily before the Hour there will be thirty liars. And you are verily one of them. 4 The leader of the Sabaiyyah; a sect who claim that Alī (radiallāhu anhu) is divine. 5
- 0215 ح هدث ن م ه د ب ن أ ب ب ك ر ال ق هدم ي ان ح هاد ب ن ز ي د ان س ع يد ب ن أ ب ع ر وب ة ع ن قػ ت اد ة ع ن ا ل س ن ع ن قػ ي س ب ن ع ب اد ق اؿ : ق اؿ ع ل ر ي ر ض ي ا ه لل ع ن و يػ و ا ل ل : «و د د ت أ ن م ت قػ ب ل ى ذ ا ب ع ش ر ين س ن ة» 1326 Muhammad ibn Abū Bakr Al-Muqaddamī narrated to me, from Hammād ibn Zayd, from Sa īd ibn Abū Arūbah, from Qatādah, from Al-Hasan, from Qays ibn Ubād who said: Alī (radiallāhu anhu) said on the Day of Al-Jamal: I wish that I have died twenty years before this. - أ خ ب ت ع ن أ ش ع ث ب ن ش ع ب ة ان م ن ص ور ب ن د ين ار ع ن ا ل ع ش و ا ل س ن ب ن ع ر و و ج ام ع ب ن أ ب ر اش د و م ه د ب ن قػ ي س 0221 و أ ب ح ص ني ع ن م ن ذ ر الثهػو ر ي ع ن م ه د ب ن ع ل ي يػ ع ن اب ن ا ل ن ف يهة ق اؿ : قػ ل ت ل ب ع ل ي ر ض ي ا ه لل ع ن و : أ ي النهاس خ يػ ر بػ ع د ر س وؿ ا ه لل ص لهى هللا ع ل ي و و س لهم ق اؿ :»أ ب و ب ك ر«. قػ ل ت : ث ه م ن ق اؿ :» ث ه ع ر «ق اؿ : ث ه ب د ر ت و و خ ف ت أ ف أ س أ ل و فػ ي ج يب ن ب غ ري ه ث ه قػ ل ت : ث ه أ ن ت ق اؿ :» ل أ ان ر ج ل م ن النهاس ل ح س ن ات و س ي ئ ات يػ ف ع ل ا ه لل م ا ي ش اء «1332 I was informed from Ash ab ibn Shu bah, from Mansūr ibn Dīnār, from Al-A mash and Al-Hasan ibn Amr and Jāma ibn Abū Rāshid and Muhammad ibn Abū Husayn, from Mundhir Ath-Thawrī, from Muhammad ibn Alī i.e. Ibn Al-Hanafiyyah who said: I said to my father Alī (radiallāhu anhu): Who are the best people after the Messenger of Allāh (sallallāhu alayhi wa sallam)? He said: Abū Bakr. I said: Then who? He said: Then Umar. He said: Then I hurried to him, and I feared that I would ask him (about who is next) and he would answer someone else than himself. Then I said: Then you? He said: No. I am a man from among the people. I have good deeds and bad deeds, and Allāh does whatever He wants. - 0222 ح هدث ن أ ب ان ز ي د ب ن ا ل ب اب ان س ف ي اف الثهػو ر ي ع ن ا ل س و د ب ن قػ ي س ع ن ر ج ل ع ن ع ل ي ر ض ي ا ه لل ع ن و أ نهو خ ط ب ل ه ا فػ ر غ م ن ا ل ل فػ ق اؿ :»إ هف ر س وؿ ا ه لل ص لهى هللا ع ل ي و و س لهم ل يػ ع د إ ل يػ ن ا ع د ا ن خ ذ ب و ف ى ذ ه ا ل م ار ة و ل ك ن ش يػ ئ ا ر أ يػ ن اه م ن ق ب ل أ نػ ف س ن ا ف إ ف ي ك ن ص و ا ب ف ن ا ه لل ع ه ز و ج هل و إ ف ي ك ن خ ط أ ف ن أ نػ ف س ن ا و ل يػ ن ا أ ب و ب ك ر ف أ ق ا و اس تػ ق ا ح ه ت م ض ى ل س ب يل و ر ح و ا ه لل ث ه و ل يػ ن ا ع ر م ن بػ ع د ه ف أ ق ا و اس تػ ق ا ح ه ت ض ر ب ا ل س ل ب ر ان و ث ه م ض ى ر ح و ا ه لل «1333 My father narrated to me, from Zayd ibn Al-Hubāb, from Sufyān Ath-Thawrī, from Al-Aswad ibn Qays, from a man, from Alī (radiallāhu anhu) that he held a sermon after the ending (the day of) Al-Jamal and said: Verily the Messenger of Allāh (sallallāhu alayhi wa sallam) did not disclose anything to us which we are holding onto regarding this leadership, rather is it something which we saw from ourselves. So if it is correct then it is from Allāh azza wa jalla and if it is a mistake then it is from ourselves. We appointed Abū Bakr, and he established (the religion) and was correctly guided until he went on his path, may Allāh have mercy upon him. Then we appointed Umar after him, and he established (the religion) and was correctly guided 6
until Islām became firm and established through him. Then he passed away, may Allāh have mercy upon him. - ح هدث ن م ه د ب ن ع و ؼ ب ن س ف ي اف الطهائ ي ا ل ص ي ان أ ب و نػ ع ي م ان ش ر يك ع ن ا ل س و د ب ن قػ ي س ع ن ع ر و ب ن س ف ي اف ق اؿ : 0224 خ ط ب ر ج ل يػ و ال ب ص ر ة ح ني ظ ف ر ع ل ر ي ر ض ي ا ه لل ع ن و فػ ق اؿ ر ع ل ي»ى ذ ا ا ل ط يب ال هشح ش ح س ب ق ر س وؿ ا ه لل ص لهى هللا ع ل ي و و س لهم و ثػ ه ن أ ب و ب ك ر و ثػ لهث ع ر ث ه خ ب ط تػ ن ا بػ ع د ى م ف تػ ن ة ي ص ن ع ا ه لل ف ي ا م ا ي ش اء «1335 Muhammad ibn Awf ibn Sufyān At-Tāī Al-Himsī narrated to me, from Abū Nu aym, from Sharīk, from Al-Aswad ibn Qays, from Amr ibn Sufyān who said: A man held a sermon on the day of Al-Basrah when Alī (radiallāhu anhu) triumphed, so Alī said: This shahshah 5 speaker. The Messenger of Allāh (sallallāhu alayhi wa sallam) came first, and Abū Bakr came second, and Umar came third. Then we were struck by fitnah after them, with which Allāh does whatever He wants. - ح هدث ن أ ب ان و ك يع ع ن ا ل ع ش ع ن ع ر و ب ن م ه رة ع ن أ ب ال ب خ ت ي أ و ع ن ع ب د ا ه لل ب ن س ل ة ش هك ا ل ع ش ق اؿ : ق ا ؿ 0226 ع ل ر ي ر ض ي ا ه لل ع ن و :»يػ ل ك ف ه ر ج ل ف م رب م ف ر ط و م ب غ ض م ف ت «1337 My father narrated to me, from Wakī, from Al-A mash, from Amr ibn Murrah, from Abū Al-Bakhtarī or from Abdullāh ibn Salamah Al-A mash doubted who said: Alī (radiallāhu anhu) said: Because of me two types of people will be destroyed; an exaggerating lover and a hating liar. - 0227 ح هدث ن أ ب ان و ك يع ع ن ش ع ب ة ع ن أ ب التهػيهاح ع ن أ ب ال هسهوار ق اؿ : ق اؿ ع ل ر ي ر ض ي ا ه لل ع ن و :»ل ي ح ب ن قػ و ح ه ت ي د خ ل وا النهار ف ح ب و ل يػ ب غ ض ن قػ و ح ه ت ي د خ ل وا النهار ف بػ غ ض ي» 1338 My father narrated to me, from Wakī, from Shu bah, from Abū At-Tayāh, from Abū As-Sawwār who said: Alī (radiallāhu anhu) said: A people will love me until they enter Hellfire due to their love for me, and a people will hate me until they enter Hellfire due to their hate for me. - 0232 ح هدث ن أ ب ان اب ن ن ري ان ا ل ع ش ع ن ع ر و ب ن م ه رة ع ن اب ن أ ب ل يػ ل ى ق اؿ : ذ ك ر ع ن د ه قػ و ؿ النهاس ف ع ل ي ر ض ي ا ه لل ع ن و فػ ق اؿ ع ب د اله ر ح ن :»ق د ج ال س ن اه و ح هدثػ ن اه و و اك ل ن اه و ش ار بػ ن اه و ق ن ا ل و ع ل ى ا ل ع اؿ ف ا س ع ت و يػ ق وؿ ش يػ ئ ا م ها تػ ق ول وف أ و ل ي ك ف يك م أ ف تػ ق ول وا اب ن ع م ر س وؿ ا ه لل ص لهى هللا ع ل ي و و س لهم و خ تػ ن و و ش د بػ يػ ع ة ال ر ض و اف و ش د ب د ر ا«5 Shahshah is the sound made by a crow. 7
1343 My father narrated to me, from Ibn Numayr, from Amr ibn Murrah, from Ibn Abū Laylā who said: The words of the people regarding Alī (radiallahu anhu) were mentioned in front of him, so Abdur-Rahmān said: We have verily sat with him, spoken with him, eaten with him, drank with him and we stood with him in the deeds (which he performed), but we did not hear him say anything of that which they say. Is it not enough for you to say (that he is) the cousin of the Messenger of Allāh (sallallāhu alayhi wa sallam) and his son-in-law, and that he participated in Bay ah Ar-Ridwān, and that he participated in the battle of Badr? ر ض ي - 0233 و ج د ت ف ك ت اب أ ب ب ي د ه و أ ظ ن ن ق د س ع ت و م ن و ان و ك يع ع ن ش ر يك ع ن ع ث اف أ ب ال يػ ق ظ اف ع ن ز اذ اف ع ن ع ل ي ا ه لل ع ن و ق اؿ : «م ث ل ي ف ى ذ ه ا ل همة ك ث ل ع يس ى اب ن م ر ي ع ل ي و ال هس ل أ ح بهػت و ط ائ ف ة ف أ فػ ر ط ت ف ح ب و فػ ل ك ت و أ بػ غ ض ت و ط ائ ف ة ف أ فػ ر ط ت ف بػ غ ض و فػ ل ك ت و أ ح بهػت و ط ائ ف ة ف اقػ ت ص د ت ف ح ب و فػ ن ج ت» 1344 I found in the book of my father with the writing of his hand, and I think that I (also) heard it from him, from Wakī, from Sharīk, from Uthmān Abu Al-Yaqdhān, from Zādān, from Alī (radiallāhu anhu) who said: The example of me in this Ummah is like the example of Īsā ibn Maryam ( alayhi as-salām). A group loved him but exaggerated in their love for him so they were destroyed. And a group hated him but exaggerated in their hate for him so they were destroyed. And a group loved him and was moderate in the love of him so they succeeded. - 0234 ح هدث ن أ ب ان س ف ي اف ع ن أ ب م وس ى و ى و إ س ر ائ يل ع ن ا ل س ن ع ن ع ل ي ر ض ي ا ه لل ع ن و ق اؿ : " ف ين ا و ا ه لل نػ ز ل ت }و نػ ز ع ن ا م ا ف غ ل إ خ و اان ع ل ى س ر ر م تػ ق اب ل ني { ]ا لج ر: ص د ور ى م م ن 1345 My father narrated to me, from Sufyān, from Abū Mūsā and he is Isrāīl from Al- Hasan, from Alī (radiallāhu anhu) who said: Regarding us Allāh revealed (the verse): And We will remove whatever is in their breasts of resentment, (so they will be) brothers, on thrones facing each other. (Al-Hijr 15:47) ]74 8
A mention of the Khilāfah - 0235 س أ ل ت أ ب ع ن»أ ب و ب ك ر ث ه ع ر ث ه ع ث اف ث ه ع ل ر ا ل ئ ه ة فػ ق اؿ : ي ف ا ل ل ف ا ء«1346 I asked my father about the aimmah (leaders), so he said: Abū Bakr, then Umar, then Uthmān, and then Alī among the khulafā (pl. khalīfah). - 0236 س ع ت أ ب يػ ق وؿ :»أ هما التهػف ض يل ف أ ق وؿ أ ب و ب ك ر ث ه ع ر ث ه ع ث اف ث ه ر ع ل ي«قػ و ؿ اب ن ع ر ك نها نػ ع د و ر س وؿ ا ه لل ص لهى هللا ع ل ي و و س لهم ح ر ي فػ يػ ق وؿ أ ب و ب ك ر و ع ر و ع ث اف و ع ل ر ي ف ا ل ل ف اء " 1347 I heard my father say: As for the preference then I say: Abu Bakr, then Umar, then Uthmān and then Alī. (Based upon) the saying of Ibn Umar: We used consider (as the best), while the Messenger of Allāh (sallallāhu alayhi wa sallam) was alive. So we say: Abū Bakr and Umar and Uthmān. And Alī is among the khulafā. - س ع ت أ ب يػ ق وؿ : و ا ل ل ف ة ع ل ى م ا ر و ى س ف ين ة ع ن النهب ص لهى هللا ع ل ي و و س لهم : ا ل ل ف ة ف أ هم ت ث ل ث وف س ن ة و ن س تػ ع ل ا ل بػ ر ي ن 0237 ج يع ا م ا ق اؿ س ف ين ة و م ا ق اؿ اب ن ع ر و ل ن ع يب م ن ر بهع ب ع ل ي ل ق ر اب ت و و ص ر ه و إ س ل م و ال ق د ي و ع د ل و و أ هف أ ص ح اب ر س وؿ ا ه لل ص لهى هللا ع ل ي و و د ع ي أ م ري ال ؤ م ن ني ث ه ل يػ ع ت ب ع ل ي و ف ق س ت و ب ل ع د ؿ و ك ل م ا و س لهم الهذ ين ك ان وا م ع و س هو ه أ م ري ال ؤ م ن ني و أ ق ا ا ل د ود و ر ج م و ح هج ب لنهاس ك اف ع ل ي و م ن م ض ى م ن اتهػب اع م ا ل هق 1348 I heard my father say: The Khilāfah is according to what Safīnah narrated from the Prophet (sallallāhu alayhi wa sallam): Al-Khilāfah in my Ummah will be for thirty years. And we use both narrations, (both) what Safīnah said and what Ibn Umar said. And we do not call mistaken the one who makes Alī the fourth (among the best) due to his kinship (with the Messenger of Allāh), him being his son-in-law, his early Islām, his Justice, and that the Companions of the Messenger of Allāh (sallallāhu alayhi wa sallam) who were with him called him Amīr Al- Muminīn, and he established the punishments, stoned (the fornicator), performed hajj with the people and he was called Amīr Al-Muminīn. Furthermore he was not blamed in his just distribution, and (he performed) everything which those who came before him were upon of them following the truth - س أ ل ت أ ب ر ح و ا ه لل ع ن التهػف ض يل بػ ني أ ب ب ك ر و ع ر و ع ث اف و ع ل ي ر ض و اف ا ه لل ع ل ي م فػ ق اؿ : أ ب و ب ك ر و ع ر و ع ث اف و ع ل ر ي 0238 اله راب ع م ن ا ل ل ف اء. قػ ل ت ل ب : إ هف قػ و م ا يػ ق ول وف إ نهو ل ي س ب ل يف ة ق اؿ : ى ذ ا قػ و ؿ س وء ر د يء. و ق اؿ : أ ص ح اب ر س وؿ ا ه لل ص لهى هللا ع ل ي و و س له م ك ان وا يػ ق ول وف ل و ي أ م ري ال ؤ م ن ني أ فػ ن ك ذ بػ م و ق د ح هج و ق ط ع و ر ج م فػ ي ك وف ى ذ ا إ ه ل خ ل يف ة 9
1349 I asked my father rahimahullāh about the preference between Abū Bakr, Umar, Uthmān and Alī (ridwānallāhi alayhim), so he said: Abū Bakr, Umar, Uthmān, and Alī is the fourth of the khulafā. I said to my father: Some people say that he (i.e. Alī) verily not was a khalīfah. He said: This is an evil opinion. And he said: The Companions of the Messenger of Allāh used to call him Amīr Al-Muminīn. So should we call them liars, when he verily performed the hajj (with the people), cut (of the hand of the thief) and stoned (the fornicator)? Does anyone but a khalīfah do this? 10
