A group of settlers burst into the Al Aqsa compound and went aggressively into the Mosque itself. The arrest of children bringing them to military court continued and in Abu Dis there were sixteen children still inside jail who had been arrested in the previous four months. Families of Abu Dis prisoners gathered in front of the Red Cross building with dozens of local people, demanding the immediate release of their sons. There were also violations in the streets and alleys of the town and this month saw a new attack on Abu Dis Secondary Boys School. Building the Wall and Confiscating Land Monday 20 th the Israeli government put on sale 5000 new building units inside the settlements in and around the occupied Jerusalem, especially in the settlements of Maale Adumim, Humat Shmoail, Jabal Abu Ghneinm and Rikhas near Shu fat Refugee camp. At the same time, on the 28 th December, the Israeli government decided to start work on a street to connect Yasof valley in the south of occupied Jerusalem with the settlement on Jabal Almukhaber which means destroying 41 Palestinian houses between the valley and the 1

The head teacher of the school and the school teachers gave a statement. This was from a CADFA volunteer who visited the school immediately afterwards: On the 29 th of December the Israeli military attempted to raid the Abu Dis Boys School and terrified the students by throwing sound bombs into the school yard. During the break when boys aged between 10 and 17 years were in the yard, Israeli soldiers hurled two sound bombs over the high fenced walls. The sound bombs are activated in the same way as grenades, a pin is pulled and then the heavy metal shells hit the ground and release deafening noise. The shells ricochet on impact and can cause serious injury to anyone hit by them. After releasing the two sound bombs at the back of the school, the soldiers circled the building and tried to break down the front gates to enter the premises. Unsuccessful in trying to shake down the front gates, the soldiers then hurled another four sound bombs into the yard which was still full of students. The headteacher explained that when there is trouble, usually the army say that school students have thrown stones at the soldiers. 8

When the students were released from school the military set up check points at the two ends of the main street, preventing students from going home. The school Head had to liaise with the Palestinian/Israeli Coordination Unit in order to get the check points removed. This is not the first serious provocation from the military at the Abu Dis boys school. In 2007 the military stormed the school and assaulted a number of students resulting in serious injury to the young students with six students receiving serious injuries. Currently there are 16 students from the school serving sentences in the military prisons in Israel. Camden Abu Dis Friendship Association has taken up this issue and has written to our.representatives to ask for an enquiry. Israeli violations at the checkpoints around Abu Dis Since the Israelis started to build the Separation Wall around Jerusalem they have worked to seal off Jerusalem very thoroughly from its suburb, and they have made special "terminals1" for people to go through to get into the city. For the towns on the east of Jerusalem, the Israeli authorities built a terminal in a place between the Mount of Olives and the town of Aizariyeh to allow people carrying West Bank passes and who have also got a permit, following very long and complicated procedures, specially now they use finger prints as well as permits. And at al-zayem on the Jerusalem road leading to the settlement of Maale Adumim, they have put a checkpoint that can only be used settlers and people with Jerusalem passes. 1 The Palestinians are now using the word mua bar (translated into terminal ) to 3

On Thursday 2 nd December, Israeli occupation forces put up a military checkpoint on routes to occupied Jerusalem during the morning and a large number of Israeli special forces spread round the gates of the Al Aqsa mosque compound, and they did not allow people to go in to pray except through two gates where they forbade anyone under 40 to take part in the dawn prayer so many of the worshippers said their prayers outside the mosque. On Thursday 2nd December, the Israeli authorities refused to let the ex-prisoner Nader Jaffal go to Jordan across the Allenby crossing: he was on his way to take part in a special conference about Palestinian prisoners in Algeria. Nader Jaffal was released from prison two years ago after a period of eight years in prison and this is the first time that he has tried to leave the West Bank since he was released. The Israeli authorities did not give any reason why they prevented him leaving in this illegal 1

Ibrahim said that they were beaten without showing their IDs the soldiers didn t know who they were and with no reason. This keeps happening to young people in Abu Dis and specially at night- they regularly catch them in the small alleyways where they set up flying checkpoints. On Tuesday 14 th December, the army used the University Street in Abu Dis for a simulation training. They stopped dozens of young people, examined their passes, invaded the shops in a provocative way. Several shopkeepers said that the soldiers told them that this was military training. On Thursday 30th December a patrol of Israeli Border Guards put up a military checkpoint in the middle of the town of Abu Dis in the evening, and soldiers held dozens of young people for a very long time and beat them. Abu Al Nowf the owner of a falafel shop said that the soldiers came into his restaurant and took out all of his customers, having taken their IDs, and made them all stand by the wall and told him to close his shop and join them by the wall. The owner of the café next door told the same story. He added that the soldiers divided the young men into small groups. Then they took individuals one at a time behind the building and beat them up. This has led to many different policies that have distorted the demography of Jerusalem. The most recent of these policies has been to put great pressure on Palestinians of Jerusalem, and led to many thousands of people having their Jerusalem IDs taken from them. Although five thousand families in Jerusalem have lost their IDs since 1973, the Palestinians still represent 35% of the population of Jerusalem city itself, because many Jerusalemites who had moved into the suburbs have moved back to live inside the city since the Wall was built. During just the year 2006, 1,363 Jerusalem residents lost their Jerusalem IDs (figures - Israeli Interior Ministry) This came after Israel had separated Jerusalem completely from its suburbs. Many people who have Jerusalem IDs, and many families who have mixed IDs live in these suburbs. Note that most people in Abu Dis have West Bank IDs but a minority have Jerusalem IDs On Thursday 2 nd December, local people and the human rights centres in Jerusalem said that two groups of settlers, numbering about 55, entered the Al Aqsa mosque in the morning under the protection of Israeli police; they went round the compound and into the mosque itself. There they held their prayers for their celebration Hanuka. This is deeply provocative because it connects to the attempt to build a Jewish temple in place of the current mosque which is very holy to Muslims. There was a strong reaction from the people praying in the mosque so the Israelis brought more police inside the compound and a huge demonstration started outside the mosque. On Wednesday 8 th December, the Israeli court in Jerusalem decided to deport Mohammed Abu Teir who is a member of the Palestinian 1

Arresting and invading houses During this month the Israeli authorities continued the policy of invading houses and arresting people. Israeli soldiers together with the intelligence forces invaded houses during the night, searched and damaged things, and made several arrests during the last month. On Thursday 2 nd December, there were house invasions and arrests of students from the old town of Abu Dis. Local people sid that they had seen a big force of Israeli Border Guards and intelligence go into several houses that were known to be accommodation for students from the Al Quds University and arrestabout five of the students, but they couldn t tell who they were. At dawn on Monday 6 th December, forces from the Israeli army arrested Walid Khalid Jumaa Sharaf (17) from the town of Abu Dis. The prisoner s family said that their son suffers from a chronic sickness and he needs special treatment. His mother added that the soldiers refused to allow her son to take his medicine with him, although she tried to explain to them how important it was. On the night of his arrest the Israeli force also invaded the houses of Muhahed Ali Abu Salah (16), Mohammed Khader Bahr (16): all of them are students in their final year at school. During the long years of the Occupation, hundreds of people from Abu Dis have been arrested, usually for peaceful resistance against the Occupation, such as demonstrations, just as in the rest of Palestine. Among these there have been many young people under the aqe of eighteen; there is now 52 prisoners from Abu Dis in Israeli jails. Among them there were 7 children. In addition there are currently more than 70 student prisoners from Al Quds University Abu Dis campus. Many of these people have suffered bad treatment, physical and pyschological torture, forced confessions, denial of family visits. This is part of a typical process of repeated extensions of imprisonment before a trial. These boys had been in prison since 4 th November. They were being defended by lawyers from Defence for Children International, Eyad Misk and Mohammad Ramzi. Notably, Members of the British Parliament were at the hearing at the military court. After the hearing the parents were told by the lawyers that their sons had been moved from Ofar Jail near Ramallah to Ramon Jail which is across the Green Line On Sunday 5 th December, the Israeli authorities freed Mahmoud Radi Eriqat after he had been a month and a half in prisone. He had to pay a fine of 8000 shekels. Khalid Mahmoud Mohsen (aged 15) was also released after he had been in prison for a month and a half and with fine of 8000 shekels. On Tuesday 7 th December Mohammad Abdullah Lafee had a trial in Ofer Prison. He was given a period of 21 months and 2000 shekels. Mohammed was arrested in November 2009 and was at that point a student in his final year at Abu Dis Boys School. 3

Prisoners who were with Mahmoud in the same court said that one of the guards had hit Mahmoud and curse him when he was in the waiting room; at that point his hands and his legs were tied. When Mahmoud tried to defend himself, the prison management considered it as an attack. He was sent to a cell on the court day and at the end of the month he is still in isolation. Mahmoud was arrested from his house at the end of September. On Thursday 16 th December, the court hearing in Ofar was delayed till 9 th January for the following children: Jahad Saleh Afana, Sufian Afana, Mustafa Jaffal, Eissa Jaffal. They were all arrested last September. On Monday 27 th December, the court hearing in Ofar was delayed till 17 th January for the following children: Yazan Dandan, Mohammed Ayyad, Mohammed Bashety from Abu Dis. They had all been in prison since the beginning of November. Article 7 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (1976) reads: No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. The UN Convention against Torture was signed in Confiscation of lands According to The Hague agreement signed in 1907 paragraph 46, occupation forces must not confiscate lands or properties from the people under occupation. 15

The same international agreement states that No one shall be subjected to arbitrary or unlawful interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to unlawful attacks on his honour and reputation Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks This month s report shows that the people of Abu Dis are suffering regular violations of all of these agreements and decisions. We call on the international community and all the supporters of the rights of the Palestinians to make some pressure on Israel as an occupying force to stop the violations and to guarantee their human rights and their rights under international humanitarian law.. 11
