69 PCBS: Hotel Activities in the Palestinian Territory, (Annual Bulletin, ) ntroduction Tourism is considered to be a cornerstone of the Palestinian economy and there are many attractive tourist sites for people of all interests. PCBS has collected statistical data on tourism and hotel activities through a continuous and thorough monthly survey since 16, in accordance with the recommendations of the World Tourism Organization and European Union. The survey aims to produce a comprehensive database and time series of basic indicators on the hotel industry to enable the development and promotion of the tourism industry in the Palestinian Territory. This report addresses the main indicators of the hotel industry. These indicators include the number of hotels in operation, the number of rooms and beds, public facilities in the surveyed hotels, the number of employees in hotels, the number of guest nights in the reference period, the number of guests by nationality, and bed and room occupancy rates. PCBS is pleased to present the results of the survey on hotel activities in the Palestinian Territory for the year of 2011 as an important statistical reference. t is hoped that this information will pave the way to the development of a comprehensive tourism program in line with international standards and user needs. 71 PCBS: Hotel Activities in the Palestinian Territory, (Annual Bulletin, ) Chapter One Main Findings 1.1 Distribution of Hotels in 2011 There were 107 hotels in total in the Palestinian Territory, including hotels closed for a temporary period. n December 2011, there were 103 hotels operating with approximately 5,5 rooms and 11,689 beds in total. The hotels operating in the Palestinian Territory were distributed as follows: North of West Bank: 8 hotels including 185 rooms with 508 beds. Middle of West Bank: 27 hotels including 1,279 rooms with 2,776 beds. Jerusalem: hotels including 1,478 rooms with 3,079 beds. South of West Bank: hotels including 2,050 rooms with 4,341 beds. Gaza Strip: 12 hotels including 605 rooms with 985 beds. Percentage Distribution of Operating Hotels by Region as of December, 2011 Gaza Strip 1% Jerusalem 27.2% South of West Bank 27.2% North of West Bank 7.8% Middle of West Bank 26.2% 2.1 Employment in 2011 There were 2,252 workers employed in hotels as follows: 400 as administrative staff (310 males and 92 females). 1,849 as service workers (1,518 males and 330 females). 3.1 Number of Guests and Guest Nights in 2011 During 2011, the total number of guests in Palestinian hotels was 510,435, of whom 12.1% were Palestinian guests and 33.4% were from European Union countries. The total occupancy in Palestinian hotels during 2010 was 1,254,695, of which 00 0% were Palestinian, 37.6% guests from European Union countries, and 0.0% guests from the United States and Canada. 73 PCBS: Hotel Activities in the Palestinian Territory, (Annual Bulletin, ) Chapter Two Methodology and Data Quality 2.1 Survey Questionnaire The questionnaire was designed according to international standards and recommendations. The Higher Council for the Arab Tourist ndustry and the Arab Studies Society both contributed to the questionnaire design. The questionnaire was designed to provide data on hotel identification, employees by type of work and sex, the number of rooms and beds, the number of guests, nationality, and occupancy of rooms and beds. The questionnaire is subject to continuous revision and is available on the PCBS website. 2.2 Coverage The survey s frame was based on the Establishments Census conducted by the PCBS in 2007 This frame undergoes continuous updating, adding newly-established hotels and removing those that have closed. Hotels which have ceased operations due to maintenance or repair activities are not surveyed until they become functional again. 2.3 Field Work The field workers recruited for the implementation of this survey were selected based on their experience in similar projects. Before being recruited, field workers undergo theoretical and practical training to enable them to carry out their work properly. The training of field workers includes data collection, the concepts and definitions used in the survey s manuals, and interviewing techniques. Regular data collection rounds are made to collect data from respondents and to ensure the precision and accuracy of the gathered data. Office Work Activities Once the completed questionnaires have been delivered for office editing, the questionnaires undergo a process of verification and coding in accordance with the coding manuals. 2.5 Tabulation and Data Processing After being edited, verified and coded, the data are captured electronically using a specially designed data entry program developed in accordance with pre-determined formats and in a way that fulfills all of the survey s objectives. Before initiating data entry, necessary theoretical and practical training sessions are offered to data entry operators. The entered data undergo electronic editing based on standard editing rules. n addition, random quality checks are undertaken to ensure error-free data entry. After completing data entry, editing and cleaning, the statistical tables are produced according to the dissemination plan. Data Quality Coverage: includes hotels, variables, registration period, and periodicity of the survey. Completeness: the availability of the data and its completeness for most of the indicators used for hotel activities.
