BETACORT Tablets Prescription Only Medicine Composition: Each tablet contains: Betamethasone 0.5 mg Therapeutic Activity: Corticosteroid Indications: Betacort is indicated as an antiinflammatory in rheumatic disorders such as: Post traumatic osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, acute gouty arthritis, ankylosing spondilitis and in collagen diseases Allergic conditions such as: Bronchial asthma, contact dermatitis, serum sickness, allergic rhinitis and drug hypersensitivity reactions Dermatological diseases such as: Exfoliative dermatitis, psoriasis and eczema. Treatment of adrenal gland insufficiency. Contraindications: Betacort is contraindicated in patients with systemic fungal infections. It is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to Betamethasone or to any of the other corticosteroids It should not be used in patients with peptic ulcer. Side Effects: In addition to the desired effects of the drug, some side effects may occur during the course of treatment, such as: Muscle weakness, fluid and electrolyte disturbances, peptic ulcer, weight increase, edema and hypertension. Precautions: Neostigmine should be withdrawn at least 24 hours prior to initiation of Betacort therapy if possible Betacort may decrease I 131 uptake and proteinbound iodine concentrations, making it difficult to monitor the therapeutic response of patients receiving the drug for thyroiditis
Betacort may produce falsenegative results in the nitroblue tetrazolium test for systemic bacterial infections The lowest possible dose of Betacort should be used regularly Drug withdrawal should be performed gradually. Drug Interactions: If you are taking another drug concomitantly or if you have just finished treatment with another medicine, inform your physician, in order to prevent hazards or lack of efficacy arising from drug interactions. This is especially important for the following drugs: Barbiturates, phenytoin and rifampin Thiazides, furosemide, ethacrynic acid and neostigmine. Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agents, acetaminophen and alcohol. Pregnancy, Nursing and Pediatrics Use: Betacort tablets should not be used in pregnancy and lactation. Long term administration of Betacort for children should be avoided if possible. Cautions: Aspirin should be used cautiously in conjunction with Betacort in patients with hypoprothrombinemia. Serum potassium should be closely monitored in patients receiving Betacort and potassiumdepleting drugs (furosemide, thiazides and ethacrynic acid). Betacort should be used with caution in patients with hypothyroidisim, cirrhosis, psychotic patients and patients with hypertension or congestive heart failure, thromboembolic disorders, seizure disorders, renal insufficiency, osteoporosis or herpes simplex infection of the eye. To Avoid Poisoning: 1. Keep the medicine out of the reach of children. 2. If an excessive dose is taken or if a child swallowed the medication accidentally, seek help at an emergency and take the remaining medicine with you. 3. Do not induce vomiting without consulting your physician. 4. Do not take your medication in the dark, always read the label and make sure you are taking the right medication. 5. Always notice the expiry date and never use the medicine after the mentioned date 6. Avoid exposure of the drug to excessive heat and humidity during storage. 7. Use the drug only as prescribed and do not exceed the recommended dose.
Dosage and Direction for Use: Betacort is administered orally, the initial adult dosage may range from 0.6 7.2 mg daily depending on the disease being treated, but is usually 2.4 4.8 mg daily administered in 24 divided doses Children may be given a dosage of 0.0175 mg/kg in 3 divided doses in case of adrenocortical insufficiency and 0.06250.25 mg/kg in 3 4 divided doses for other indications Betacort should be taken with food. Do not double the dose. Missed Dose: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is the time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue as your regular dose schedule.
